St. John Chrysostom, in the 4th century, speaking of marriage said: From the beginning, God in His providence planned this union of man and woman. God has put into a man’s heart the capacity to love his wife and into a woman’s heart the capacity to love her husband. There is no rela$onship between human beings as close as that of husband and wife - if they are united as they ought to be.God’s purpose in ordering marriage is peace.If a man and a woman marry to sa$sfy their sexual appe$tes, or to further the material aims of themselves or their families, then the union is unlikely to bring blessings. But if a man and a woman marry in order to be companions on the journey from earth to heaven, then their union will bring great joy to themselves and to others.When we speak of the wife obeying the husband, we normally think of obedience in military or poli$cal terms: the husband giving orders to the wife and the wife obeying them.
But while this type of obedience may be appropriate in the army, it is ridiculous in the in$mate rela$onship of marriage.
The obedient wife does not wait for orders. Rather, she tries to discern her husband's needs and feelings, and responds in love. When she sees her husband is weary, she encourages him to rest; when she sees him agitated, she soothes him; when he is ill, she nurses and comforts him; when he is happy and elated, she shares his joy.
Yet such obedience should not be confined to the wife; the husband should be obedient in the same way.
When she is weary, he should relieve her of her work; when she is sad, he should cherish her, holding her gently in his arms; when she is /lled with good cheer, he should also share her good cheer. Thus a good marriage is not a ma0er of one partner obeying the other, but of both partners obeying each other.
Obedience should not be confied to the wife; the husband should be obedient in the same way. St. Paul writes: “Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:22). Thus a good marriage is not a ma0er of one partner obeying the other but of both spouses obeying each other.When the Apostle Paul says: “Husbands, love your wives,” he does not stop at this, but gives us a measure for true love by adding, “as Christ loved the Church” (Ephesians 5:25). And how did Christ love the Church? “He gave Himself up for her,” the Apostle says. So even if you must die for your wife, do not refuse.Love is most powerfully present in a marriage when accompanied by respect. A good marriage is like a castle. When husband and wife truly love and respect each other, no one can overcome them.In the providence of God, when a husband is spiritually weak, his wife is spiritually strong; and when a wife is weak, her husband is strong.Nothing can destroy love that is rooted and founded in Christ.The love of husband and wife is the force that welds society together.

I have been married two times… the first one we had 4 children … he died at 53 yrs… I married again when I was in my 60’s…. Four years ago my youngest son passed away last year another son passed away…. I have grandchildren 7… 2 great grans…, I live in Hendersonville , No C. I am from North Jersey (Rockaway), but my sister, brother in law, and I were in Seaside on Friday. We drove to Saint Martha's to have Popeye (senior pug) and Homer (puggle) to be blessed. What an absolute treat that was, and to finally see you in person!!! I loved how you also stopped and blessed all the dogs out for their evening stroll... You are just as awesome in person, as online. Church was not open, but I got to peek in the window - just as beautiful as online! God Bless you Father Dave for all you do for us!

Fr Dave, you rock. 69yrs old and I have never heard a Priest so able to intermix the readings with his homily. Feeling Blessed! Paul from Viking land.
Heavy in my heart this week's homily. 1st husband, alcholic, died. 2nd husband, many affairs, drugs, abandoned. During my 2nd marriage, 30 yrs, I'd go to confession and was told we were blessed. Maybe I was, but he wasn't. I'd read the Bible and learn all about David in the Bible, as I knew my then husband was named after him. He came from a strong Italian Catholic family. I interrupted the Bible wrong or at the time didn't understand. So I divorced him. We are friends now with caring feelings, but he is stuck in a relationship I believe he is afraid of. But this homily made me sad. Thank you for it, though. I understand more now and haven't given up my faith. Thank you for the animal blessings. Prayers for all priests, congregation, and all who need prayers. I continue to think about the ways of St Therese.
I apologize for exposing myself so much on a public forum that should only relate to the Mass. That's who I am and maybe there is someone else out there who can relate and not be afraid to speak via words on a screen, to show the comfort and true understanding of Fr Dave's homilies. Again, I apologize and continued prayers for all and prayers for anyone in the path of Hurricane Milton. God bless.

Sorry about your pup. Our cat had lymphoma during the St. Francis blessing time 3 years ago. It was heart-breaking. But while he was dying, our new "precious child", Manuelita, was being born. So mourn, but don't give up hope. God bless you all.

I feed the squirrels,birds,rabbits everyday,sometimes a hawk sails through and gets one of my birds if I don’t see him her first,but that’s nature. Yesterday it seems he finally took a turn for the best and is going to fully recover from whatever he had. Very nice mass, Fr. It cut in a couple places though.
Please pray for my grandmother. She is finishing up her radiation therapy and will hopefully be going home today, but she is not eating well. This could be because she was in the hospital for two weeks, but I pray she is able to eat better once she is finally home. I also know that despite this treatment, her health is worsening and this was basically only a way to give a few months to her. Prey that she manages to recieve the best care we can give and figure out what to do, be it in home hospice, or taking her somewhere. But most of all, give us a little more time to love her.
