SSU: residents of temporarily occupied territories shocked by ‘ruZZian liberators’

  • This is evidenced by a telephone conversation intercepted by the SSU between a militant of the so-called DNR (whose unit is now stationed in Kherson region) and his relative who lives in Tarasivka villiage, Zaporizhia region.
Influenced by Russian propaganda, the woman had a different image of ‘liberators’, but the reality is shocking.
‘Seryozha, come here and see what’s happening here! I’m not telling you some bullsh*t! I always believed you! I believed, as you explained to me about the Banderites - I hated them. Now, who should I hate?’ the woman asks her nephew.
She does not know how to protect her 14- and 10-year-old granddaughters from the ‘liberators’. ‘We give them sausages, and they break into houses, rape children and shoot in the legs,’ the woman cries. ‘What should I do? They walk around the village, ask where the young girls are and offer diesel for them…’
The relative advises: ‘If there is an opportunity - go somewhere. To the rear, somewhere to the city.’

So, let me get this right. The woman is somewhere in Russian-occupied Ukraine. She is/was pro-Russian before. But has suffered from the actions of Russian soldiers. The guy is in Kherson area. Assuming he is pro-Russian too. They both know each other. She is distraught with what she has seen but he doesn’t believe her.
If I understand it correctly, she supported Russians but realize now that support was misplaced and suffering the consequences of it. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I see nothing changed for the past 80 or 100 years. My great grandmother lived through second world war, escaped concetration camp, hid in the basement for 3 months from germans, but she said all that was nothing compared to what russians did when they were "liberating" my country in 1945. She was 15 when the "ruska swołocz" - as we say in Poland, rolled through Poland. She had to hide constatnly in fear of being raped. Her friend which she escaped from concetration camp with was raped countless time and when the russians finally left her, she killed herself. They were looting everything, beaten whoever resisted, elderly, children, people with disabilities etc. During "liberation" they managed to destroy the city completely - Not even during german invasion the city was destroyed, but when they came they were bombin everything, just like they do it now in Ukraine.
She always repeated - Germans were bad, but Russians... those were animals which made Germans look like angels.

My grandfather was with the US Army Office of Special Services. He, along with other Polish-Americans of the OSS, British trained Polish SAS, were brought into Warsaw to help coordinate the Warsaw Uprising.
The view was that if the people in Warsaw could throw off the Nazi shackles that the Russians would be forced to recognize it as a Free Polish City answerable only to the Polish government in exile & if they did occupy it then it would be a breach of the alliance. (Regardless of the fact that Western allies being in Poland was already a breach of the terms of the alliance.)
The Russians did come to a halt & observed the ongoing battle until the resistance was thoroughly wiped out. Then they swept in & mopped up what remained of the exhausted Nazi forces.
My grandfather & a handful of others of that joint unit escaped during the Soviet attack. On his deathbed he recollected the failure of the Warsaw Uprising as being the second greatest regret of his life; The greatest being that he didn't give up his life for the cause.
My Great-Grandmother, his mother, hated Germans & Russians equally because she'd lived in Poland during the time it was divided between the two prior to the Great War. She didn't even like him playing with German & Russian immigrant children when he was little in upstate New York. Ironically his childhood of speaking Polish at home, English at school, German & Russian with friends as well as their families while at play is what gave him part of his qualifications to serve with the O.S.S. in WW2.

Yes, true. Starting in the Soviet army, maybe even before - no-one just cares to study how russia became so big... The soviets were horrendous towards the germans, the rapes at that time were unspeakable which could be explained by the anger for destroying their homeland. But in reality the anger was mostly from frustration - that the Germans lived better even when losing the war than the soviets during peaceful times. And after winning the war with the help of the whole world the soviets turned all of the anger inside. Nobody killed as many people inside soviet union as the soviets. Now russians wanted to get Ukrainians as their slaves - they got used to that "little brother" bullsh*t where our language was mocked and repressed, as well as our traditions and style of life, our freedom. And they can't forgive us. In their eyes we can either be their poop puppets, eyeing a bone from their table, or just die. And no way Ukrainians can have better houses and life than their oil-abundant country. Our sin is that we exist, we want to be free and we want to build happy lives. That's a painful reminder to russians that they failed somehow, and they must be the rulers of the slave world - where everyone is unhappy, but at least russians are the bestest of the best.

What Russia is doing to Ukraine now is what the German Nazis did to them - they are simply justifying their brutality by saying that Ukraine is as bad as Hitler's Germany (which has no basis). Having said that, after WWII, what the Russians did was payback - Germany had invaded Russia, slaughtered civilians and obliterated entire Russian cities. They deemed Russians to be "Untermensch" or subhuman. They treated them worse than animals and sent multitudes of Russian Jews as well as Christians to concentration camps. The Germany population at the time generally supported this so they were all seen as the enemy. I don't believe what Russia did in Germany was right but there was a reason for them wanting revenge. What they are doing now has absolutely no justification. The Ukrainian population did not despise or want to harm Russia - at least not before this war.

The state was everything and you where superior, and the enemies are nothing but pigs. IDK how you can really break this spirit. It worked on Germany and Japan because the victors enforced people to learn about their imperial country atrocities (and even Japan isn't really cures, still people respect some awful generals and rapists). But as long nobody is going to force Russians to learn it, they will never think of it as a bad thing.

There was an indoctrination going on for a very long time related to what this woman mentioned, namely "banderites" which is about supporters of Bandera and his ideas, which in Russia are considered criminals. What really annoys the Russians and Russian leaning people is that from the Ukrainian view he is a hero (fighting for Ukraine, against both Germany and the Soviets in WW2), whereas from Soviet view he was a criminal (because of fighting against the Soviets). I never cared much about all such stories as this is just not important, but I can tell that before 2014 this was a real problem for those who feel they want to be with Russia and for some reason many such people identify Russia with Soviet union. So a 'criminal' in the eyes of the Soviet union is then seen as a criminal in Russian view. I talked a lot with a woman from Yalta up to the invasion of Crimea by Russia, and after this happened she suddenly started complaining about Ukraine which she never did before, and especially about how Bandera is considered a hero in Ukraine (or at least he was stated to be such by the government). This woman was told all the BS that the Kremlin trolls like to spout with videos on this invasion by Russia, that there are nazis, bandera followers, ukrainian military killed lots of people in the Donbass area (well, logically, if they grab tanks and other weapons and start talking about wanting to be with Russia and shooting at the Ukrainian military, they will shoot back!), the ukrainian military uses civilians as shields (complete BS). The woman I talked to at the time was similarly indoctrinated, and despite seeking religion (christianity) as basis for her to feel that everything makes sense, she was more influenced by the old testament than the new testament. Revenge rather than the sermon on the mound. Etc. Now this woman on the phone realised from what she saw that actually the people she supported are far worse than the people she thought were bad... The Russians don't care about her, neither the Russians in the army nor those in the Russian government...
