My wife retired from OTR trucking 4 years ago and her last truck was a Volvo. Said it was the best truck she ever drove.
To be a Volvo driver you need to have your left foot up on the dash and several gps's on the windshield and phone in your hand

And speeding up when a truck trying to pass trying to assert some type of dominance
I love watching Brax just jump in and start checking fluids n what not. Then when he actually moves them around it makes me smile. He's gonna make a hell of a trucker some day!! Probably a hell of a mechanic too! Teach em young!! Rock on!!
Few things about the Volvo. I’m gonna assume you probably just aren’t operating the cruise control correctly. To turn cruise control on it is the top middle button on the left side of the steering wheel, to set the speed, use the dial directly underneath that button and press down, to adjust speed up or down scroll up or scroll down from that dial. I personally haven’t seen the cruise control fail on the Volvos I’ve driven, even with various check engine faults.
Next is the shifting control. Your Volvo just happens to not be equipped with the shift up or shift down buttons as well as the drive mode. The M is for holding a gear. The workaround for not having the shift buttons, is using the engine brake control lever for downshifts. Usually switching from level two to level three will force a downshift. Then pressing down from position three to position B, you can force a maximum downshift for whatever gear is available at that speed.
That engine should hit about 35 pounds of boost, so it definitely sounds like there’s probably a leak, but could also be related to check engine light. In the cluster you could check for all the faults and a generic description. You can also check oil level in the cluster.
Also, that sunroof/moonroof is not all it’s cracked out to be. In the middle of the summer they let in a lot of heat. Also, they seem to have problems with leaking.
All in all, they are generally very reliable trucks, apart from the emissions system obviously lol
I think Mrs Gentry made an executive decision on the Volvo. I always wanted to drive a big Semi so it’s really cool to see someone drive one that you wouldn’t expect to.🇦🇺

Probably the EGR cooler leaking internally. That truck doesn't have the option to shift while in manual mode, it would have a + and - button. Thats only for holding a gear.
You and Ashley are so compatible when you're together that it almost feels like a warmth I get seeing you two enjoying the company of the other and having a real fun time doing what both of you love.
Looks like a nice truck to keep for the wife or for a driver/team. I'm an ole truck driver and I'm like you I would rather drive a 13 speed (or any manual) over a automatic. So glad to see you doing so well, keep up the good work, and take care of your family. I like that you and Brax work with your dad. My dad was a general contractor building mostly residential homes.I started picking up nail at 7 y/o. I worked with him off and on ( got drafted into the Army and went to Vietnam as a combat medic 68-69)Got out of the Army in 70 and went back to work with dad by 75. Until the building market collapsed in the early eighties. I sure had some times and learned alot from my dad. Then a friend of mine taught me how to drive a transfer dump truck and evidentually ended up doing end dumps, refers, flat beds. and doubles. I even got into being a diesel mechanic on the trucks I drove and the other trucks he had when I wasn't on the road. Sorry this is long winded but you bring back so many wonderful memories. Great video Tim common coolant leaks on those Volvos are from the upper and lower rad hoses due to loose clamps, water pump, heater hoses, and the plastic lines on the front side of the surge tank are known for leaking
He checked them lol.they wasn't leaking

I have run the deer whistles on my trucks and personal vehicles for years now. They do work !! You should give them a try. The deer will stand still and watch you go by.
Tim, you should consider keeping the Volvo. They are a very popular truck here in Australia because of their reliability plus Ashley likes it and would more than likely go back to driving. Great repo job.
Man Tim! If I wasn't 61 and my wife wasn't a Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor, I'd LOVE to move to TN and drive loads for you! You run a tight ship and you're wise beyond your years and I love your family business model! Oh well...Unfortunately retired not by choice, but you do the best with the hand you've been dealt - and you, my friend, have been dealt a winning hand! (Totally understand that it wasn't easy either!).

I've seen so many small trucking outfits sink because of these new trucks I'd unload it faster than you can swat a fly.
I'd have to go 10-4 on that..... too many variables to work thru on the new trucks when they fail
Gotta buy the premium shifter which will mount on the side of the seat but gived you ability to upshift/downshift, and access to drive modes, or you can have the stock shifter flashed to be able to enable modes and manual shifting. As it sits currently, all that M does is lock it into a gear.
Dont need seat shifter for that. That truck was fleet specced to lockout manual shift
All he's gotta do is change the ECM programming. Changing the type of shifter isn't going to do anything

I really like the Volvo cabs quality, very solid and quite, the electrical is a good layout, windshields used to be easy to change.

When I was on the road a few months ago, my wife made me enough meals to hold me for the week. I had 2 refrigerators, a microwave, a coffee pot. Took a dozen eggs and made 2 ham & egg sandwiches every morning for breakfast. I NEVER spent more than $20 a week unless I needed supplies
Order the other shifter for it with economy mode or power mode it will be a game changer for that truck

If you want better shift points, you can tune it to get rid of progressive shifting. Progressive shifting will skip gears and shift lower in the rpm band to save on fuel. Theres a performance mode on some of the volvo shifters where it'll wind out the rpm and hit every single gear without skipping.

I have 2018 780 volvo. I brought it brand new with 10 speed manual transmissions. I wouldn't trade it for nothing. I got 712k now and still kicking 😎
Great video. I drove the same model truck for 2yrs. Lower radiator hose clamps caused my only leaks.

I take it Volvo's are quite a underrated truck in the US, here in Europe they are rated as one of the best trucks on the road..

Safest cab built. Don't put the family in anything else. Keep it stock (until all warranty is expired). Get it to the dealer and let THEM plug up and diagnose (tips from 25+ years at a dealer). Keep up the good work. One last tip: read the owners manual.

Check the EGR cooler Quick!!! Before the antifreeze coats the SCR AND DPF FILTER!!!! That in an expensive repair!!!! I had one and it started leaking at less than 50,000.
Tim... Volvos are good comfortable trucks. I drove one in my expedited days. I loved the ladder to pull out to get into the upper bunk. I hope you decide to keep it. You won't be sorry.

The company I work for in Australia has a 700hp Volvo it walks around most things on the highway dragging a 68t b double behind it

Great truck Tim, worth keeping it , volvo, scania , all quality rigs . I own a 1997 UD tipper , had it 15 years and other than general maintenance its never missed a beat ,. Another thing why do women drive with there phone on there lap , there is no reason to touch it while driving at all
I'll drive that Volvo over the fld any day all day, I drove a 760 for 3 years and I loved it, and it made me alooot of money and only broke down 1 time cause of the starter....and I was getting like 7.5 mpg sometimes 8
Curse control is second button from your left of steering wheel will turn on, center small button on left will set your speed.

I’ve been driving two years. I started out driving a 22 automatic Volvo and was hating trucking. Now I’m in an 14 386 peterbilt with a 13 speed, i run no logs hauling milk. Now Im actually loving trucking. There is still new guys with old souls. Next goal is to be pulling a bull rack with a long hood.
I would say keep the “exhaust “ on it. Keep it simple and stock so you don’t have to worry about getting in over your head.

We mechanics deal with the "exhaust" everyday. They are horrible systems and suck the money right out of your pocket. Get rid of the "exhaust"

i’ve been in those volvos for 2 years now, aside from check engine lights popping on frequently I have never been left stranded in them. the ones i’ve been in have all gotten 9-11 mpg loaded depending on weight
You missed the best part of the 860. Lift up that bottom mattress you have the table dinette set up and it has the largest refrigerator of all the OEM trucks.
In Florida all you need to do to switch from auto to manual is retake the road test in a manual, no permit, no pre trip, no backing
I'd drive it! Man the more I watch your videos the more interested I get in getting my CDL. I've been debating for a while I just fear getting screwed by a big trucking company for the first year or so. I can't afford to pay for my own training. Been having a hard time here in Ohio for a while now trying to make something happen. Appreciate all the good info you guys give.
Something that can happen is get your license threw a mega (from my research cfi seems decent) and you can leave at anytime just have to pay the loan off and most the time they do prorate it for every month you drive for them takes so much off or go get a class b which is easier and is like dump trucks school busses ect and save cash from that to upgrade to a class a or check with your state sometimes they have programs and scholarships you can apply for and sometimes working for the state directly they will sometimes pay for a class b idk if it's contract work or what just some options to think about.

I like the Volvo. Get it detailed and sort out the check engine then have your buddy tune it and I think it'll be a nice truck.
I drive that exact truck, we team about half the time. You can sleep while moving. They are the most comfortable truck out there. Very dependable and we have about 400k and only problems are the plastics are falling off everywhere, but ours are lease. Super truckers hate them.😂 ours are turned up to 80mph so we collect peter built doors all day long..

Since yer wife will drive and the truck feels like its from another planet.... Super Girl might just be its name. The dark blue does ask for the name of Plumb Sweet, and the third and last is the little fellow who is really short, wears a football helmet and has metal surrounding it to make him invincible plus the dog that who meets him first is having one heck of a time sending packing from earth.
I had them leak behind the egr cooler it’s a plastic coupling from cooler to block or cooler itself. It’s wonderful to change
First thing I would do is get the interior thoroughly cleaned and the cabin filter changed and then look into the seat shifter that volvo have. See if it fits to your truck if you want manual gear selection option. Then go with cruise fix, the coolant and then finally an exterior clean.
Been driving an M-drive Mack trans for 6 years now, and they’re bulletproof!! Never had a breakdown or any issues with them. Yes, it’s fun to get back into a stick for a day or two, but on the second day, I’m wishing I had the M-drive back

It’s a typical Volvo leak at the upper and lower radiator hoses most likely. Usually it’s not visible unless you really look for it
I'm old school as anyone but I've been driving a Freightliner with an automatic lately and it's really different but I'm beginning to like it especially in stop and go traffic.
Yeppers that transmission will flat spole a guy 😮. I'd surely put it to work. My sister drove a Volvo coast to coast for 20 years pulling a refer, with 400 cats in them, an only 3 year old. Full sleepers, for 15 years she never had a house. Very nice 😉. Most drivers would be happy to drive that truck. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.

Since Volvo and Mack share powertrains . that I shift is the fleet transmission. Manual mode just holds the gear your in. The deluxe shift pad has up/down buttons plus there's a performance setting. That just holds the gear longer between shifts. I used to prefer manuals. But driving around Boston with our newer Mack's with their Mdrive transmission. Its like driving a Cadillac.
They drive and ride really well also very good a backing
I think your wife likes the automatic. It’s time to buy Mama an automatic and get her on the road. She looked happy driving. My sister loves her automatic KW, especially in traffic.
Id drive it in a heartbeat. I love the pre elog manual trucks and hate emissions. But thats a nice ride for sure.

I had a Volvo through swift it had a Cummins isx and 10 speed one of the best riding trucks i ever had Tim I would drive it but I'm happy where I'm at in my t680 with my mom and pop.
If I saw the upper Rad hose dripping, Tim should be able to see it!!

Yeah, too many kids aren't interested in driving, Worse still is too few kids have responsibilities today & it is a great shame, for so much is learned from doing. So, well done in letting Brax learn as he wants, for there is a going to be a great man in the future.
If you don't let a boy do stuff he's technically too young to do he'll have lost interest by the time he's old enough. The good, ambitious kids are always pushin the boundary, and some lose their entire momentum when they hit a little speed bump. They only need mentoring through the rough patches. Best not to let them know you're keepin tabs on them and they'll launch like a rocket.

I bought my 2020 vnl 860 back in February been running since and loving it. I got the 455hp 1850tq and 2.64 RAR I Shift 12spd with performance shifter, FlowBelow Aero, Air Tabs, and big exguard grill guard up front, and still has the exhaust on it. I pull dry van in the Midwest hauling feed and feed ingredients always grossing 78k to 80k and been averaging between. 7.1-7.8 mpg running between 70-75mph. I think this truck will surprise alot of people.
For a team it would be great! I drove a auto Freightliner and it was gutless
used to never want to drive an auto then I got in one and boy it's sweet to be able to eat a Sammy and drive.

check the cooler lines down the pass side to the back of the trans my mack was losing antifreeze one day it wouldn't start and found the leak lines run under starter
I agree with you tim. Most new drivers dont care for the old trucks and rather just be able to get in and go but there are a few of us that don't align with the majority and rather have the older stick shift trucks without all the electrical stuff

We choose to watch your content if people don’t like what you say, they don’t have to watch it you owe nobody nothing we chose to watch your channel. The opinion that some people have is ridiculous. Don’t turn yourself to be for the people because you’re gonna make mistakes. If those people drive those mistakes in you they really not for you your dad and you started this company and your son and your wife. There’s not an individual who started it maybe your dad but it’s family run just like my landscape business is family run too many people have so much time on their hands that they just have some ridiculous comments you keep up the good work and remember give it to God.
Well, I’ll say one thing my dad was a trucker for 40 years he’s not around anymore and I know for a fact that he would never drive an automatic, but different times different generation for me. I love the manual I love shifting, but to get an automatic NAV improve the transmission where you can do both and comfort then maybe but man it would be hard to sell because I love shifting and hearing the Jake break when I’m shifting my beautiful truck for you I would keep it for you and your wife to put a driver or your wife I think it’s a fantastic idea what she said keep the truck
