Let me rephrase for someone who apparently doesn't consider characters real people: I highly appreciate how Eiichiro Oda wrote and designed the character Monkey D. Luffy and added these particular characterizations, balancing out his intellectual flaws with a carefree and optimistic personality. I like how I can relate to the characters in the anime. They are more than just drawings, with their voice actors and backgrounds, they are people. Fictional people, characters in a story, but still people. I fully understand he's not real. Don't get me wrong here, i love One Piece. I have "dedicated" years of my life to this anime/manga and i will continue doing that in the future. I love this anime so much that I have written thousands of words to help and make people understand different kinds of aspects in this story. One example is someone asked about Zoan devilfruits. I decided to help him and explained everything to him, from all of the three different classes, to all the transformation stages. I really love this show, but i do not consider any of the characters real. One day when the manga/anime ends this carefree character will stop being carefree and "die". Yes i will be very sad, and it will probably feel like i lost a close family member, but i will recover quicker than if a real family member died. So i do not consider Luffy real. You may do so, but in the end he is a drawing. In case u feel offended or something about this (which i don't know why you would, but lately a lot of people on the internet gets offended by everything) I don't want to start any "fight", i just wanted to express my meaning and feelings to this case. But I wasn't trying to say I think he's a living person who I personally know or anything, just that I tend to empathize with characters on a very high level and they all feel very real to me when I get into a show. I can't watch anything labeled tragedy or with reviews that proclaim it to have a sad ending. I'm an emotional person, I can't help that, lol.
