Wembley Stadium, London. 1958 FA Cup Final. Bolton Wanderers beat Manchester United 2-0 in Football Match.
Zoom shot into massed crowds cheering. SV The two teams walking out onto the pitch, Bolton in white shirts and Manchester United in red shirts. GV teams line up for presentation to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. SV Duke shakes hands with Nat Lofthouse, Bolton's captain. SV Matt Busby, Man Utd. Manager, seated and waving. SV Bill Foulkes, United captain introduces to the Duke a United player who shakes hands with him. CU Gregg, United goalie waiting to be presented. BV Prince Philip shaking hands with Goodwin. GV Cheering crowds. LS Man Utd kick off from left to right and Ernie Taylor dribbles up field passing, but the ball goes loose. SV Hartle of Wanderers gets to it and clears down towards the United half. LV Bolton attacking, Ray Parry passes out to the right wing. LV Harry Gregg hesitating. LV Ball comes over from the right wing, Gregg runs out of goal and jumps and grabs it, he drops it for a moment but gathers again and throws clear. SV Ball rebounds off a United player and goes to Doug Holden of Wanderers who kicks down towards the United goal. LV Bolton attacking again, ball is headed by Parry of Wanderers, Goalie Gregg runs out to collect but misses and luckily Foulkes is there to kick it into touch for a corner. CU Girl in crowd sighing with relief. Zoom shot as Holden takes a corner for Wanderers, United player heads out and the ball goes to Parry who starts to dribble towards the goal, he crosses it and Crowther clears out for United. LV Ball goes to Edwards of Wanderers who kicks towards goal, Lofthouse runs and shoots, scoring Wanderers first goal. LV Crowds. CU Boy cheering. LV Pan back on players congratulating each other. GV Elevated shot of United attacking. LV Ball is passed out to Colin Webster who has changed over to the right wing, a Wanderers defender tackles him but Webster beats him. Zoom shot as Webster runs in with the ball, passes it and another United player shoots at goal, but it goes over the bar.
CU Woman in crowd with cup of tea and sandwich gasping. LV Bolton Wanderers start to move and the ball is cleared down to the Manchester United half. SV Crowther of United and Stevens of Wanderers chasing the ball, Stan Crowther trips Stevens up and he turns a complete somersault. Free kick is awarded. CU Old lady in the crowd. LV Wanderers player taking the free kick, crosses it in front of the United goal, Gregg runs out and jumps and collects but he drops it and falls to the ground, ball goes to Lofthouse who tries to tap it to one of his men but a United player runs in and takes a terrific kick at the ball, misses and the ball finally goes to Ronnie Cope of United who clears down towards Bolton's goal. LV United player running with the ball, he passes it to Charlton who beats Higgins of Wanderers and kicks it down towards the Wanderers goal. LV Taylor of United running in on the ball, he shoots and goalie Hopkinson makes a beautiful save tipping to ball over the bar. CU Man in crowd gasping. SV United attacking again, ball is passed out to the right wing. LV Goalie Eddie Hopkinson hesitating. LV Charlton running in with the ball, he centres it across the goal but a Bolton defender heads it into touch. CU Boy in crowd looking disgusted. SV United still attacking, Taylor passes the ball, it goes to Viollet who loses it to a Wanderers player, the ball goes down towards the United half. LV Foulkes gets the ball and passes on to Viollet who again loses it to Holden, he races in towards United's goal and shoot, but goalie Gregg collects safely. CU Woman in crowd cheering. GV Massed crowd waving and cheering. GV Bolton attacking on the right wing, zoom in to show Stevens with the ball and he centres and Gregg jumps, catches the ball and then falls to the ground, gets up and throws up field, one of his colleagues receives and kicks it first time across the field. CU Charlton with the ball, is tackled and brought down and the ball is cleared by Bolton player.
SV Ball runs to Birch, tackled by Dawson who passes to Charlton who puts the ball across the goal to colleague who promptly lobs the ball into the middle. Webster and Hartle go for the ball, it runs to another Manchester United player who passes to Bobby Charlton, he shoots, ball hits post and bounces out into Hopkinson's hands. SV Harry Gregg. GV Bolton attack, ball goes up field, a scramble and the ball runs to Stevens who shoots, Gregg saves, it bounces into the air and Gregg holds at a second attempt, but Nat Lofthouse charges Gregg over the line for Bolton's second goal. Not necessarily. Bolton had beaten United 4-0 earlier that season and United had won the return match 7-2. Either result was possible, especially as Wolves were top at the time of the crash and United had only won 4 of their previous 10 games.
