Mega Man X2 was an incredible sequel. The music is just as amazing as the first one and the Mavericks are so unique from one another. It's really hard for me to choose which one is my favorite boss, though Overdrive Ostrich, Magna Centipede, and Wheel Gator are great containers (the last one's theme I made a recent metal cover of and it's funny that he took that 1% out of perfection for you haha) but all the themes are so interesting in this game. It's interesting that you like Magna Centipede's theme because I was thinking of making that one my second X2 cover. Anyway, great video. Love seeing more Mega Man X content
Would love to see a Magna Centipede cover! That drum part is insane! And don't worry, I can't stand the Wheel Gator fight, but his theme still rips as well!
Down for hearing your take on Magna Centipede Consolous i know you'll make it a blast! , I'm still working on my composition of spark mandrill from mega man X1 though I'm not sure how a I want to arrange it I'm thinking of going with a FM version using my DX7IIFD when i go back to Europe
The music isnt as good as the first one. I love the game, but x3 has better music and better looking bosses. Id argue that x2 is better balanced than x3. The air dash is fantastic...but x is still the best x game. Id argue that x is the best mega man game, at the very least up there with MM3 and slightly behind 2.
I replayed this game and taking a more critical and mature look, not a childish and nostalgic view, I realized how excellent this game is. Very few media have sequels as perfect as this one.
Wheel Gator becomes a nightmare if you use his weakness. It's much more doable with the X-Buster, and if you get good RNG he'll keep throwing wheels at you instead of submerging all the time. My favourite X game because of that kick ass double X-Buster, the best in the series imo.
Great review! and my favorite mega man x game. i own alot of old sound modules and i can tell you that sound in crystal snail is a vibraphone from a Korg M1/M1R also the drum breaks in magma centipede. i did a remaster of final fights bay area With A DX7IIFD and the Korg m1 is the only thing that could make drum breaks that sound like that. a lot of the bass and Synth sounds come from a Yamaha SY85/TG500 (1992) which is FM in PCM sample format and they are EXPRESSIVE. The Guitars and other instruments are a mix of the KORG Audio Gallery AG-10, and the M1/M1R
This was my first mega man game I played. I was in second grade and remember renting it from blockbuster. I remember it being my first mega man game because I thought you play as the mavericks you pick. Anyways, I somehow beat it at that age, thought it was revolutionary, propelled me to play the other MM games and it definitely is still the best of X series to this day.
Buster is easy but then again I only really do buster runs nowadays, but wheel gator is my first pick because the buster parts, or is he my second I always forget lmao
Same here. Started with wheel gator ever since I was a kid when I got the game. Now that I’m older I do the frame perfect wall jump to get the buster upgrade so there is no need to go back to the stage.
X2 is my favorite still have the box/game that I got it from circuit world when they sold their rented games I also did wheel gator first then overdrive then weakness order lol
Agreed with everything you said in this video, but I recommend you try fighting Wheel Gator without his weakness. It's WAY easier because when he comes out of the water he just stands there and you get a ton of free hits on him except for his occasional dash attack. But yeah his boss is still kinda shitty. And for that matter I think all the bosses in X2 are way more fun without their weaknesses, since they all have crazy Spark Mandrill syndrome. (Unless you're speed running through the boss rush like me)
If your fast enough you can basically stun loop him with his weakness like they do in speed runs, but often it's best to just shoot him till he is about to go back under then get as many stun loops in as you can before climbing that wall.
The 16-bit games are my favorite. X4 was decent, but the platforming and stage layouts were superior in the first 3 games in my opinion. What Sigma said at the end of this game had my jaw hit the floor when I beat it the day it was released. Such a wild time to be a MegaMan fan back then.
Back in the 90s as a kid I decided I was going to beat every one of the 8 Mavericks in X through X-3 with no upgrades. I used a password to get to right after the Intro stage and did each one from that point skipping every upgrade on the stage and beating the boss (except the leg capsule on Chill Penguin obviously, so I just didn't use dash on him). Unfortunately I lost the passwords I took down as proof at the time. No way I could do it now with carpal tunnel and mild thumb arthritis.
X2 is really my second favorite of the X series My gripe is that the boss music was pretty underwhelming especially compared to X1 Great video, glad I subbed😊
I actually did a stream playing it this morning for the first time in a long time. Was super rusty but fought zero on purpose and he was a lot easier than I remembered
Was expecting for the issue to be the final stage. Was prepared to talk about LTTP and SM having you literally replay the entire time (overworld) non-stop and people don't talk about that when discussing those games, perhaps some people who dislike SM would discuss all the long backtracking, but whatever. That's it, that's the only flaw in mmx2, it's an actual perfect game.
X2 has a lot of flaws, the boss fights are gimmicky, the music tracks some of them start off strong then progress weak like wire sponge or overdrive ostrich, the buster upgrade is annoying to get
X2 is easily my favorite Mega Man game overall - not just the X series, but the whole thing. I consider it borderline-perfect (my only issues are that the uncharged Speed Burner is very niche, the bike should either be in more than one level or not appear at all, and Violen's second fight is a bit underwhelming). Also the Head Armor is useless nowadays thanks to the internet, but that's not the developers' fault - there's no way they could have seen that coming when making the game (plus you could always just choose to not use the internet). Compared to X1 and X3, I think X2 looks and sounds better, has better bosses, and has better designed levels (plus better basic enemies than X3). More objectively, it has the best weapon balance of any SNES Mega Man X game (X1 is busted wide-open by the Fire, Ice, and especially the Tornado, while X3's weapons are largely redundant with each other, almost all of them dealing high damage while having an awkward hitbox or some other restriction), while it's optional boss system is better communicated to the player than X3's (and X1 doesn't have one). PLUS it's the only one of the three where getting 100% doesn't require any backtracking - in X1, you HAVE to do Boomer Kuwanger's level twice (and basically to the end!), and in X3, you HAVE to do Tunnel Rhino's level twice (though not very far in), and even excluding that, a lot of the upgrades are gated behind the Drill weapon just in general.
For Wheel Gator, there are two tricks to speeding him up. 1) Don't go on the walls. Stay on the floor (or just above it with jumps/airdashes) to lure him out. Keep moving though, because obviously you need that leaping bite attack to miss. Use dashes and airdashes, but don't go on the walls. 2) Ignore his weakness. Unlike every other weakness in the franchise, it only makes the fight take longer. Use the X Buster. The Strike Chain forces him to dive again, and the buster doesn't, so just keep rapid-firing at point-blank range. I once got lucky with his AI and beat him the FIRST time he emerged from the goo with this method. That said, I do recommend using the chain if you activate his invincible projectile spitting attack; that'll damage him through the invincibility, and end the attack. For Bubble Crab's stage: hit the giant fish mech with one charged Sonic Slicer while standing underneath him. You can basically one-shot him with that and make the whole level much simpler. Similarly, you can wreck the minibosses in Morph Moth's stage with the uncharged Bubble Splash. One volley from point-blank will make the little chameleon bot leap out of the big junk mech, and another volley destroys the chameleon. You can get Bubble Crab's subtank without his special weapon btw. You see that little slope to your left at 9:33? If you run left, then jump *right* as you hit the top of that slope, you'll jump high enough to cling to the left wall under the subtank, and then you can keep treading water (mash jump at the surface of the water to jump again) underneath the ledge, and get the tank. Also you can blow up those enemies who pull the walls shut by using the uncharged Silk Shot. That's another thing I love about this game: you can optimize it _so much_ even if you're not speedrunning.
Also the only X game I grew up owning as a kid (Thought now I own X1 X2 X3 on SNES and X collection on Gamecube) was Mega Man X for DOS The PC CD Rom Version of the game (I still Own it) but its slightly worse than the SNES version, having no ability to get the Arm upgrade from Zero if you miss it, also having No ride armours But It does have Save games instead of passwords, the ability to press "-" on the keyboard and turn off the music (Why you would do this I have no idea) and a Cheat code where typing "xstuff" gives you all the upgrades and all mavric weapons at full energy even if you are in the intro stage.
I'll give it 98% perfect. Aside from Wheel Gator, I don't like that your upgraded charge shot stops your forward momentum on the ground. But yeah, the game's so solid all my criticisms are nitpicks.
Normally I would not comment on the whole preservation thing as the game itself is easily found in rom form online. That said, the physical carts are another monster altogether. Speaking from experience nearly 1 in 20 or so snes carts are degraded to the point where the games no longer function and this seems to be even more extreme when the FX chip is involved. I have come across probably half a dozen "Bitrot" Starfox carts in the last decade or so and at least 1 entirely fucked copy of MMX 3(much to my dismay). I have a feeling in my lifetime that this will just continue to be the case as time goes on. Also, yeah the gator can go get fucked >.>(hes also the biggest pain in the ass for speed runners as well lol)
Yes emulation has its place for sure in keeping games alive especially once all the carts die out (even if that's in another lifetime). My whole thing about preserving physical media is delaying the inevitable degradation of these carts. Great insight though from you in noting that games like Starfox seem to suffer a lot from degradation.
personally, I think the weakest part of the game is the standard boss music... it's just kinda; Waaaaaaah wa waaah wah waaaaaa (clink clank) dsh dsh dsh (CLINK CLANK) (repeat forever)
Whjeel Gator is the FIRST MAVRICK In X2 I ever beat.... He's the Second easiest fight in the entire lot of mavricks behind Wire Sponge I can commonly Zero Damage him. But I do agree with you on how slow it can be. I do not however agree that it hurts your thumb,
Now that's a tough one to answer! Typically I say Classic Mega Man over X for me. But honestly, I might give a different answer depending on the day, haha!
That’s cool that you like it! I did a video on X3 a while back, I have a new found appreciation for it after making that vid. X2 still my favorite though.
I could easily charge, dash jump around and wall jump with ease and I didn't press forward forward to dash, I was an A presser on the SNES. My trick was I would just use the tip of my thumb to constantly shoot and charge and the bottom of my thumb to jump. And to press the A button, I literally used my fore finger and curled up on to the top of the controller. It looked like a weird claw finger and my best friend would make comments about it while I was playing. Anyway, I was an absolute beast, using this method and was able to beat MegamanX in about 34-35 minutes, with everything, including Hadouken😊
This is why I never use wheel gators weakness because he can actually stay above water for longer
Mega Man X2 was an incredible sequel. The music is just as amazing as the first one and the Mavericks are so unique from one another. Nah the music in The second one is a bit weak compared to the first game, it has some great tracks but a lot of them are kind of dull

1:48 - "Spongebob"???
This is CLEARLY Bushroot from Darkwing Duck!
Haha! I should have done that comparison. I actually have a vid up on Darkwing Duck for NES as well!
I replayed this game and taking a more critical and mature look, not a childish and nostalgic view, I realized how excellent this game is. Very few media have sequels as perfect as this one.
Totally agree!

Get the worst one done first haha! How on earth were you able to beat him with the buster? I cannot get that timing down for the life of me!

Absolutely!

Debunked the Mega man x2 imperfect allegations.
Haha! Guess it's perfect after all!

I love the X2 Medley by Breis , been listening to it for like 10 years.
This is one of my favourite games ever and a truly excellent sequel to a truly excellent game.

That *DAMN* body armor piece.

I always started with Flame Stag. He was the easiest for me to beat as a kid.
My brother opts for Wheel Gator, I believe.
I was so sad that this game didn't get the "Maverick Hunter X" treatment.
X2 has a lot of flaws, the boss fights are gimmicky, the music tracks some of them start off strong then progress weak like wire sponge or overdrive ostrich, the buster upgrade is annoying to get

Maybe it's because I'm using a PS4 controller and the DPad digs into me. It was also a good opportunity for the SpongeBob clip
X2 is a really incredible game and is my third favorite of the X series after X1 and X4. Certainly a game on par with them or close to.
MegaMan peaked at X
now here comes the important question: Mega Man 2 or Mega Man X2?
Now that's a tough one to answer!
Typically I say Classic Mega Man over X for me. But honestly, I might give a different answer depending on the day, haha!
Unpopular opinon but... Megaman x3 is better than x2.
That’s cool that you like it! I did a video on X3 a while back, I have a new found appreciation for it after making that vid. X2 still my favorite though.
Correct opinion. Better music, better bosses, double the armor upgrades, collectable ride armor, and playable zero.
#25 on the likes
Thank you!

The part I didn't like about X2 is that the music seemed inferior to X the wire frame mini bosses seemed like a gimmick to me.
The biggest issue I had as a kid that I don’t ever see anybody talking about is that explosions when you defeat a maverick are blue. What the heck?
The music in this game is terrible.
Terrible
