I experienced the same thing with my ex-husband. He decided at 55 to become a professional actor without a day job. He still owed child support for 2 of his 3 kids. It left up to me to support the household and from the beginning I told him that I did not make enough money to do that. The pressure eventually took it's toll on my health and I was diagnosed with Lupus and Fibromyalgia. In the end I had to make a choice between him and my health. I chose my health and left him after 3 years of putting up with his lack of support.
Watching this made me feel so much better being a single dad paying child support on time

This is exactly what I thought while listening to the call. He probably only accepts cash for his landscaping “business,” which will mean that his client base will inevitably be smaller. When other companies take checks/etc, there is no incentive for anyone to choose him for the work they need done. If he were to try to open a bank account, his funds would be garnished pretty quickly. He is fully aware of this and is actively avoiding it.

@@angelbear_og most pay their employees with cash, jobs like this, bartending, waitressing etc. don't get w-2's. the worker just has to keep records of their pay to file their taxes, the owner is responsible for filing their business returns. it's much easier for him than working at mc donalds etc. where he knows they will be notified right away.

I've seen this before. He can't see himself with a menial job. If he can't find a job worthy of him, then he needs to take a good, long look in the mirror at who he really is. He seems to be ashamed of what he sees so he tells himself that he's "working" toward a goal. That inability to see himself will lead to a deficit for everyone involved. Sometimes we just have to get through the hard times even when we don't like what we see in the mirror.

My father had a landscaping company through 1960's through to the early 1980's. He mostly had his dad, son, brothers and nephews to help him work it. He made it work very well. He made enough money to buy a house in a nice neighborhood, build on a second floor to the house, and add a built in swimming pool. My parents had one or two cars at a time growing up. He would drive oil trucks in the winter and plan for the next summer season and build his customer base through networking with people he knew and through word of mouth. This was on Long Island.
God bless your dad he had a hard work ethic and wasn’t shiftless.

Like other posters have said, he probably had the allure of a "project", which many young women fall for for some reason. Yep. Snow removal is what many landscapers do in winter. And tons of places hire extra workers in the fall before Christmas. UPS and FedEx being great examples of higher paying temporary jobs.

Let me start by saying... the best saying that Dave has ever said is "CHANGE YOUR FAMILY TREE". And that is my goal in life even though I stopped working about a 1.5 years ago. I have no issues spending money on my kid, including paying for University and anything else my kid wants or needs.
What he should be doing is working a 40 hour, 5 day a week work week. THEN, work on the landscaping job during the weekend. Once that is doing really well, then he can take less hours at work until he can do the landscaping full time.
But, the problem is, he doesn't really want to do anything. He is using the landscaping business as a reason for why he can't work a normal job - because he doesn't want to work a job at all.

Leila Adams My guess is that, since they have 2 children together, and she said they are both in school, so kids are grown. That means they have been married for a while. My guess is that when they got married he was working, and looked like a nice guy to get married to. Otherwise he would be a lot more than 58k in the hole for 3 children.

While her husband sits home drives a brand new BMW and he swears he will be getting workers comp any day now. I can hear the embarrassment in this callers voice just like I hear in my neighbors voice.

It's amazing what people are accepting just to be not alone. After nearly 30 years of an unhappy marriage (4 kids) I requested a divorce (2017). Now I know that I was more alone during my unhappy marriage then today. I am finally free again. Every day is now my day! What a relief.

I am amazed that Dave actually had a good answer for this poor woman. I had no idea how to help her. I hope he is seeing his kids and calling them, at least! I wouldn't be surprised if he has a few more kids, but the moms haven't come forward because they know dad has no money. But maybe someday a few more juniors will show up at their door.
