Brian Boru's March on hammered dulcimer by Timothy Seaman

  • www.timothyseam... Timothy Seaman uses a separated-hands technique on the Dusty Strings D600 hammered dulcimer to play a unique arrangement of the great Irish tune about a great Irish hero, Brian Boru. The tune is a march in 6/8 time, so the right hand moves back and forth in mirrorlike patterns, R-L-R, L-R-L, to create a lively swinging effect, and each new pass-through of the melody is in a new key a fourth lower than the one before. In the third verse the dampers are depressed; various departures from the exact tune arrive serendipitously.
A studio recording of a similar performance is on the album Jamestown: On the Edge of a Vast Continent, with several other instruments joining in for a full improvisational flavor, found here: timothyseaman.c.... (The new tune title additionally used on this album is 'Building James Fort.')

There used to be a hammer dulcimer in the pub opposite the pit in Clay Cross. My dad told me the miners used to stop on their way home and play all sorts on it. Guess we re talking the twenties.

Beautiful performance.Brian Boru , high king of Ireland , composed in his honour for safeguarding the Irish Indigenous people from viking invasion, last battle fought in Clontarf 1014. His predessors were not as successful in preventing the later invasions of the Norman and British occupations on the Island

Agree 100% with Ross! And I had forgotten how much I love "Brian Boru's March." My first encounter with the silver rain of a hammered dulcimer occurred over 40 years ago at my first Renaissance Faire, near San Francisco. We ended up following the player ALL over the Faire for hours, and I emerged a lifelong fan.

Each time I hear this version I am fascinated... The sound is so round and rich... and watching the hand is mesmerizing... it seems like the hammer never touch the string (yet they do) and.. whaaou, I love that. Thank you for this interpretation and for this video :)

Love it love it love it! The descending keys and the slow, dirge-like fourth verse convey something very important about the song: this is a battle that Brian Boru does not come back from alive.

These ancient instruments are so much soulful and more rich that I must divide my music listening "career" in two parts: time before finding these and time after finding these. Even though before I listened everything from black metal to techno, classical, progressive rock and jazz, finding these was a game changer I just can't go back being without the tones and tunes of our past.

It's a special damper system some hammered dulcimers have nowadays; some people use it to stop the ringing, but I tend to use it just occasionally to get that special effect. (I recorded in a 'live' reflective room so it has some natural reverberation, too. manufacturing.dustystrings.com/hammered-dulcimers/options/dampers

I hope not TOO odd! I was playing with the dampers held down on the strings in order to get a contrasting sound for that verse, rather than all ringing all the time.
