- Let say you cant switch controller ports during the Psycho Mantis fight. Well, the game designers actually accounted for that. But if you continue to ignore they advice they give? can you beat mantis even if he can still read your mind? Lets find out!

I was a dumb kid so I killed Mantis without switching the controller or break the masks. Took a long time. I learned about the second controller trick years later.

I've always heard of being able to kill him without moving the controller port or destroying the busts. Nice to see someone actually upload a video doing it.
This is insane this was by far my favorite game to play when i was 9 to 11 years old and remember this being my favorite fight because young me didnt understand how he read my past or moved my controller i thought for all these years the only way to beat him was swapping ports
For sure you can! I remember beating him with no special stuff or gimmicks when I was 8, took a lot of focus though 😂
Yep, just takes forever. You can do the entire fight without thermals, without guns, and without breaking statues. I didn't even KNOW about breaking statues until very recently.
2:05 It doesn't make sense anyway. Why are there statues of mantis in the Commander's room anyway? The room doesn't belong to him. Does Mantis take two statues of himself around with him when he's taking over facilities even though he doesn't like his own face? :D

I just finished a replay of MGS1 last night, and I wanted to beat Mantis via the statue method. Shot at the statues for a good few minutes and... nothing happened. Does the codec call explaining the statue thing need to happen first? Does it not count if you've already switched controllers? What's the deal?
if you die once Colonel calls and says to switch ports, if you die twice he calls and tells you about the statues. But the statues don’t become destructible until that call
It is possible. When i got the bandana i tried this theory out by unloading the famas on him constantly and to avail he couldn't exactly dodge "everything" even though it made the boss battle longer it was worth it to listen to his amazing boss theme especially in Twin Snakes.
You can also control the guards in the tunnel at the end by putting in another controller in port 2

The real reason why Kojima still makes mantis beatable even if player can't switch into controller port-2 is, because they think Sony someday will release "Playstation Nomad" or "PSXpress" like Sega Nomad or Turbografx Express (basically portable Playstation 1 / I'm not talking about PSP obviously)
Player can't switch into "controller port 2" since portable console designed only for single player only.
I've done it without moving the the controller port and without destroying the statues

1998 I played Japanese version before the English version released …. I spent hours fighting Mantis ( very hard ).

It's incredibly surprising to me since the way I finished (Psycho Mantis) over a decade ago is exactly the same as what you did in this video. I was a youngster playing video games with zero English language at the time, and I had no one to teach me what to do on this mission.

I didn't know about the statues, and, honestly, that sounds like just an easier way of handling him compared to getting up off my ass to swap controller ports. Can you do it right away at the start of the fight or do you need to wait until your support crew tells you to?

I beat Mantis without switching controllers...I would replay this game so much I must've beaten it over 20 times. When I finally did switch ports it felt so easy. I remember struggling badly against mantis.
Yes. Shoot the statues on the sides of the rooms.

You can shoot and run same time, press square and at the same time press x, this will allow you while you aiming or shooting

As a kid i had no imagination. Never would have thought of using the port trick. It is every 8th hit. 7 punches then use your gun.
You can. I did it. It took me a while. But I also wasnt told to change controller ports by anyone until i talked about finally beating mantis in school.
And I just learned about the bandanna thing today. Learning new things on this game even today.😮

Okay so when you ducked the boxes with snake that was pretty slick
So every 8th strike you somehow get lucky and hit mantis, 8 is the luckiest number in Japan. Coincidence I think not.

I beat him with the bandana and the FAMAS. Took over an hour to do. Although I did learn really quick not to use explosives lol
I just learned how to switch ports on the Xbox series x last night on My third play through I was in the Torture room when I figure this out press the 2 top triggers on your Xbox controller at the same time a menu will pop up and allow you to switch ports
im playing mgs1 for the first time and ive done some attempt with mantis but still didnt beat him yet. Amazed by the gray fox bare hands boss fight i wanted to try the same thing with mantis, no port 2 and no statue. I simply just keep thermal for the entire fight and follow him and then punch him, i managed to get almost to the end of the fight and i mean like 1/5 of the health bar. i didnt thought that i can i dodge object simply by crouching so im gonna try again my method with this new knowledge and i will let you know

Or…you can die 3 times. Then shoot the 2 statues until their heads bust off and Mantis can’t read you all while plugged into port 1
I first beat him without port switch. Didn't even know what to do. It took me 30 mins each time, if i die? I had to take another shot for 30mins.
dont rmb what year ago was it but I beat that game few time without even knowing we can use 2nd controller port to beat that boss. but was so long ago and I thought it was just a dream or somthing lol.

I have never played this game but just curious, how are you suppose to figure out that you need to Switch the controller port in order to beat him?
Your radio support tells you theres a trick, hint that it involves your inputs, and then after dying tells you the solution.

I got this for the anbernic 35xx and I died a billion times and I never got the solution until now. But my system got corrupted and my data was deleted.
Usually you can go into the emulator settings and set your controller to port 2
I played on my anbernic and had a pretty good experience

Great Question! No clue.
On the HD collection on the PS3, you could switch the controller in controller settings. But I don’t think that’s a thing on say the Xbox or Switch.
I hope they come up with something. Maybe the statue solution will become the default?
@@mrdanrennie The Switch lets you switch the order of cotrollers in one of the menus. No idea how it would work on Xbox or PC tho... The PC in particular lets you use multiple control inputs interchangeably.
@@captainthunderbolt7541 I’ve played through on my switch, I think that menu exists for MGS1 across platforms, just hit the equivalent of the triggers
How will this work on PS5 you cant switch ports in a menu like PS3 😮
They’ll figure it out, they’ll probably have some kind of menu option of like “press R2+L2 to bring up controller menu”
Wtf the masks never broke when i shot at them
You have to wait for the Colonel to tell you. Or you could just use Stun grenades on them anytime, they won't break but it still works on Mantis
