From every demo I’ve heard of these Mooer preamp pedals, I’ve been very impressed by these little boxes. Whether they actually emulate the amps they claim or not aside, they produce some very cool and usable tones in my opinion.

I have the dual recto one and the Engl Fireball one. The recto one lacks a bit of gain (I own a real Recto so I can compare) but the Fireball one has that sizzle that Engl has. I also have the Mooer GE200 and I use it for practice alone and recordings (along with other preamps like a Mesa Studio). It’s not exactly a Kemper but the ability to tweak and add custom impulses makes it come closer to the more expensive modeling stuff nowadays.

Seeing that tiny little pedal on top of a Strategy 400 is great and I appreciate your choices.
I would recommend checking out one of the Mooer floor processing units. I have the GE250, it has a lot of really nice amp models including this one. You can also clone your amp like the Kemper. On top of all of the stuff these floor units usually have (modulation, boosts, reverbs, delays, wahs, etc).

(Edit: Finished the video and loved nearly every tone I heard. Seems like a super good preamp pedal.)

Like you said, it doesn't sound like a 5150. Yeah maybe more Mesa like but to me it just sounds like a pedal distortion. A really good pedal distortion but definitely not what it says its supposed to be. I would love to get one of those mooer preamp live units. They have all the little pedals in it and it can be midi switched.
Def parts where it comes close, especially through the mesa power amp. Better than the size and price would lead most to believe!

I have the Mooer Brown Sound 3 and i think it sounds awesome. After watching this, I decided to 1) move my EQ pedal to output of side of the brown sound and 2) put an OD in front of it. Your mileage may very, but I think the 3 does indeed take an OD pedal well and I love how it tightens the feel of it. I’m still trying to decide if I can deal with noise of having the EQ after it. 13:17 I do it, too. I use older technology from the Line 6 POD x3 and the Zoom G5 that gets the job done after much tweaking and twisting of knobs.
I believe these pedals are like having a single Kemper profile in a small stomp box. My theory is that the knobs at noon are like having a flat profile and moving them away from noon is adding some sort of post eq rather than altering the actual amp's EQ. I could be totally wrong but once I started treating them like this and not moving the knobs too far from noon I have had decent luck with them. Also, I think the power amp sound is also baked into the pedal so I try not to add too much power amp coloring.

This pedal sounds exactly like the 5150 model on my Atomic Ampli-Firebox. I like it, but it definitely has a "farty" low end which I think drowns out the higher frequencies. Problem is, when I turn the bass down on the Ampli-Firebox, the tone gets thin and harsh. There's almost no middle ground, it's either thin with no low end or too much low mids, even with a boost. I wonder if that low mid frequency is just inherent with these modelers.
Mooer amp pedal plus a mooer radar pedal to emulate power amps is epic.
This and the radar would make an awesome pedal board for direct, split the signal, use the powerstage to drive a cab for stage monitoring or a different flavor for studio.
Actually, this and the Radar is a fly rig of Cradle of Filth guys. There is a video where they talk about that and play some riffs. It indeed sounds great live, I can confirm it

First of all I appreciate your thorough reviews &effort. Too many waste time running their mouths &spend no time going through the amp’s channels &tones.They also have no idea how to use an amp eq . My complaint is not using a graphic eq pedal. Keep one around when you do reviews. Instead of telling us you’d use an eq , Use one!

Presence is really high treble and resonance is just really low bass. nothing a parametric EQ couldn't do!
Now that we know you have a killer power amp, there are some things I'd love to know how they sound in a modern metal application, specifically rack gear from the 80s and 90s. You can get so many of those preamps for great prices these days. Love to hear your take on the ADA MP-1 or Marshall JMP-1! I love your channel and both your honesty and style.
I own both and like both. I used the MP-1 through a Mesa 50/50 power amp and I didn’t dig it all that much but I used it through my dual recto power amp and it sounds awesome
I would definately consider buying that pedal. Mooer makes cool stuff. I already own the Amptweaker tight metal pro I , Fat metal pro II though.

Did you put the TPA-1 on after the built in sim (pedal out with sim on > interface > TPA-1 plugin)? I believe it is intended to go between a preamp and impulse response (which you did) but that could be an interesting way to use it for more of a natural sounding eq/compression.
a thought, do you think it's modeling the green channel instead? it's got a lot more low mid going on, and i would generally consider it more "brown sound".

@@belligerentamateur He may be referring to the 005, which is supposed to be a EVH 5150-III. The 015 “Brown Sound” is supposed to be like the OG Peavey 5150 / 6505.
