Interesting. There is an area in central Washington State (US) along the Columbia River and Snake River, that looks very similar to where you are riding. This area was denuded of grass and soil thousands of years ago when a great ice dam broke away about Missoula, Montana. The backwater that shot ahead scoured the land and carved out much of Eastern Washington state and then what is now the Columbia River on it's way to the Pacific. Later, volcanoes on the Pacific Rim expulsed enough material to cover the lower areas with what is now a very fertile ash/soil. Really enjoy your videos, Kevin. All the best.
You truly are a minimalist adventurer, Kevin! Your narrowboat experiences have undoubtedly given you a lot of ‘food resilience.’💪🏻 It’s important to challenge ourselves like this now & again, if only for the satisfaction & contentment that comes from saying, ‘Yeah, I did that & persevered!’ Keep the awesomeness rolling🏍…cheers!😃
Ha, an stomach of iron as my old man used to say - enables me to eat lethally hot currys and live to talk about 😁 Tis true living on a boat trains you to carry the minimal of essential items.
As a Christian I can appreciate the old church and the history within its walls and that old, remarkably well preserved floor. Thanks for another great video.
Harris still doesn’t disappoint (through the lens anyway), love it! Fabulous church. I grew up in a tiny rural village in Norfolk with a medieval church which still has some medieval murals on the walls, tombs dating as far back as 1250, no electricity (lit by oil lamps) or mains water and a plague pit which has always fascinated me. Access is by farm tracks only so very tucked away. My lovely Dad is buried there. Next week’s episode already looks intriguing. Enjoy your day off! 😎
Adventure means different things for differrent people, but seeking it is the most important step. There is a wonderful feeling you get when you end up saying to yourself, "I did that." Each of us needs to find our level of challenge, and perhaps push it a bit. The rewards are always worth it. Great job, as always!
Had to look? The British Ilses have been inhabited for almost 900,000 yrs. The oldest rocks in north-west Scotland are 2.7 billion years old! Wonderful adventure!! Thanks Kevin! Love all of the old architecture! Thanks again!!
07:50 fantastic to see the proper use of a passing place! Oh, and "Roghadal" is pronounced Rodel if I remember correctly. As for the roads "I wouldn't want to take a motorhome down here" - it's an issue faced in a lot of areas in Scotland, the NC500 is one such area, where the infrastructure was and never designed and shouldn't be changed to fit larger tourist vehicles. A lot of people are completely oblivious to just how rural Scotland is. Skye, one of Scotland's most accessible islands, has a population of only 10,000 people but nearly 750,000 people visit it.
Good job traversing the lunar surface on your motorcycle. Seriously, those single track roads through the rocky hills are amazing scenery. That church you found was outstanding! Wow!
Thanks Kevin, that was a lovely but sort of stark looking countryside, I was imagining that the road in places would've caused a bit of 'twitchiness' with all that gravel and no room for error. The old church looked marvellous and the sign that you showed us gave some hope of further refurbishment so it won't end up being totally neglected as a lot of churches are in England (or turned into something else)). Take care and all the best. Stevie
It’s such a desolate landscape. Rocks everywhere…I think of all the people who have tried to make a living farming - what an enormous undertaking. My hat is off to all those brave folks! Another fantastic travelogue! Well done!
Thanks Kevin. Another wonderful trip around the remoter parts of our islands. I've just watched this one in my holiday cottage a few yards from the Leeds Liverpool canal, on the farm next to Niffany swing bridge, a scene I saw on one of your canal trip videos. The sun is out here, so I suspect it's slightly warmer than South Harris!
Hi John. I recall the name Niffany quite vividly. Such a beautiful stretch of canal and yes, I think everywhere is warmer than South Harris at the moment. 🤭
First, I have to say that for several minutes prior to your remark about this would be like riding on the moon, I had thought this must be what it would be like to ride on the moon if it was able to have any grass anywhere on it. My goodness what countryside. And then the church. That gloriously ancient church. I cannot imagine what it took to build it, what it takes to maintain it, and how determined all involved have been and still so remain today. Thank you for taking the time, Kevin. I certainly hope you got to have lunch somewhere on your serendipitous journey around South Harris.
Hi Lynette, that church was a huge surprise, plonked there in the middle of nowhere. In hindsight it would've made a great place to secretly spend the night. 🤭
Ive really enjoyed your Scottish trip Kevin, you photography and commentary are excellent. Im a lifelong biker, i have a new Enfield Classic 350, Signal version, plus a Honda Monkey bike. Love that GS but it looks quite tall, im 5. 10 and i think id struggle. Ride safe, youre doing it just right. Regards.
Fantastic to hear you're enjoying the road trip, cheers. I've often looked at the newer Monkey Bikes as a general runaround. Great on fuel. Yes the GS is tall. I'm 6'1" and on tiptoes. 🤭
It takes a lot of courage to give up one lifestyle for another so different with a lot of unknowns but you did it Kevin! I enjoy telling people i meet about you & your adventures & how skilled you are mechanically & technically. These videos are so enjoyable & i like seeing how rigged up your motorcycle is w/ equipment & necessities all so carefully selected. Keep on having fun & happy trails from the USA!
Hi Kevin I see that you are still enjoying your trip to the Scottish Highlands.. unfortunately the weather is starting to change .in that part of the UK..as it always have this time of the year.. You mentioned about your narrow boat I was wondering if you still have it. I have followed your channel from the first time you upload a vlog about living on a narrow boat.at that time I was still living on my narrow boat..I found it fascinating to watch your life unfold living on your boat ...you have become a bit of a legend amongst the boating community.. many people have said that they admired how you have delt with situations that have turned up... unfortunately I had to give up my boat and motorbike because of health issues. Unfortunately at my time of life this is what happens to many people... Anyway Kevin as always keep yourself safe and well mate.as no-one else will do it for you...😋
Hi Wayne and have no fear, Aslan is still very much my home. Amazed to hear that my name is spoken with such reverence. 😎 Ah well, I suppose I'll just have to live with it. 😁 I'm very sorry to hear you can no longer use a boat or bike but as you say, something that catches up to us at one stage or another, and something I'm always acutely aware of. Many times when you stopped to pan and share vistas, you can hear the BMY idling. I so yearned for the motor to be silenced in those moments. Just my thoughts shared back with you. Thanks again! 😊
Hi Kevin, Well the best part of this video was your visit to the Church. Harris still looks pretty bleak to me. I look forward to the next episode where the scenery may pick up. Looks like you found yourself a nice place to stay. Hope your next ferry crossing isn’t too rough. 😀🤞
Thanks Kevin. Greetings from across the pond! I have truly enjoyed your most recent travels/Vlog series. Can’t wait for you to get back on the canal system and continue that series as well. Safe travels!

I totally agree. You don’t have to be religious to like churches and cathedrals. I made a point when we were in Rome to see the Vatican last year and we’ve already been there once prior. Just amazing. Enjoy your travels.
Hi Kevin. Good to be on board with you. I must say when you turned left before the church, you had the water in front of you from what we could see it looked as if you were going into the drink lol. Really enjoyed your ride.Stay safe my friend😎
My goodness, those landscapes would be eerie at twilight! Reminds me of Canadian Shield country- rock, rock, and more rock. The 2 countries were separated millions of years ago.
@@CountryHouseGent I swear Nebraska is that flat. Of course 500 is an exaggeration but you can drive for hours and never change altitude or turn the wheel. Arizona has big hills and mountains. Nebraska just has sunflowers.
Kevin, St. Clements Church was a right wonderful tour extra on your part. I have seen some of your early photography work. You clearly have an eye for what is interesting. Being of Scandanavian descent... I am oddly drawn to landscapes like Scotland. I told you that your motorcycling was motivating me to travel that way again... I'm 90% (or so) recovered from shoulder reconstructive surgery, and have started my short tours within a few hundred miles of my homestead. Now that the weather is cooling off ... and my 61 yr old shell is mostly working again... I am going to do it! A longer tour, perhaps even overseas. I have two hard cases (Afrikan) on the back of my DR650 SE, and a Corbin seat (super comfortable). My bike is far simpler than your BMW GS, but... it's a proven trooper. I rode a similar bike all over Afganistan in my mid 30's and know that there isn't anything I can't fix on it with simple tools and means. Just have to say... your bachelor travelogues have been good for me to watch. Love the narrowboat adventures and can't wait for more of those... but... no canals here... just endless long roads. Cheers for your efforts and again, thanks!
It is very good to hear you're going to be piling some luggage on the trusty steed and hitting the highway. My eyes were drawn to the DR650, I very highly regarded and capable adventure bike - light weight, go anywhere ability and good fuel economy. Good to hear your fitness is building and look forward to reading comments from your travels on the road (or off it). 🙂
Hey! Hey! Hey! It's Friday again! The landscape in places does remind me of something from Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings. The quiet of the church seems deafening. Beautiful ride again. Thanks! Be safe out there. -Cheers from Seattle!
to me, Kevin, you've solved the 'adventure' equation better than anybody I ever met: plan, then put yourself out there and see what happens...here you are again, moving alone (together with us, your video companions) through the brooding volcanic beauty of the Scottish countryside -- of course, I am beginning to miss the old canal circuit -- happened to see an early episode of "Foyle's War" a couple days ago and one of the scenes was set at a canal lock I was certain I'd seen you navigate on TBN -- who did I think of?
I've heard a lot about Foyles War, I'll have to check it out. Which episode was it? All that's needed for an adventure is a comfort in your own company and somewhere warm to lay your head, as a minimum. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent also food, I'd need food, though I acknowledge it can be adventurous locating food -- the Foyle episode referenced is Season 1 Episode 3 "A Lesson in Murder" @ 1:00:38 -- not much is shown of the lock, but it really looked familiar -- the fictional story is set in Hastings, East Sussex, but I don't know where it was filmed -- have been thoroughly enjoying the Scottish road trip, somewhat a departure from the leisurely movements of Aslan but compelling nonetheless

I have an idea. Buy a Harris tweed jacket and a bottle of Isle of Harris whisky. King Charles is in Scotland at the moment, at Balmoral. You should drop in and have a cuppa with him. lol
You must have been shattered after your early rise that day. Me and Richard are trying to find a weekend before Christmas to have another cruise. I think I did his head in talking about you and your adventures. But secretly I think he loved it. Happy cruising kev. Maybe one day we will pass you on the cut. Sorry about the silly name of my TH-cam page. I was bought up with Bernard wriggley. A musical commic from Bolton.... ( The Bolton bullfrog)
Amazing how St. Clement's church is at the furthest flung corner of the island. According to the roadmap which I follow you on, it is the only ecclesiastical monument on Lewis and Harris. No doubt Stornoway has churches, but not such as are worth an honourable mention on the map.
I’m not certain what I dislike more, gravel on the roadway, or manure from the farms. , or the occasional “ road apple “ from the Amish buggy’s power plant.
The Lickisto Blackhouse campsite was on an old episode of Build a New Life in the Country which I watched just a few weeks back. I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s turned out as the owners were really struggling when they first started, so I hope it’s been a success!
Thanx from a grateful "passenger"! Can anyone explain what that green surface with white stripes on the lake is?? (@8:44). I'm coming up with all manner of crazy ideas... I'm loving your motorcycle trip, Kevin, but I started pining for Aslan- Problem solved-went back & watched a couple of episodes on the Lancaster. It was nice to hear her rhythmic chugging💗. Ride safe, bro.
I'm not sure but they are definitely some kind of floating platform. Maybe something as simple as a jetty for tying fishing boats to. Cheers for revisiting previous narrowboat videos. 🤗
One other wee point, again a bit like NC500, people gravitate to Harris & Lewis, and just ignore the Uists which, much to the annoyance of my family who come from the far north of Lewis, are far prettier.
Nice honest church, that. I'm the same, Kevin - not religious, admire the architecture. They really should sweep the chippings up. Unfortunately bothies are being ruined by parties of anti social scum. They're no go areas, afaic.

Ah yes, now you mention it. 😂 Yep, there's nowt like Chrimbo on the canal. 🤗
Another enjoyable time riding along Kevin. Thanks. About how cold was it?
Cheers Clive. With the wind chill is was around 5 celsius.
Amazing how St. Clement's church is at the furthest flung corner of the island. According to the roadmap which I follow you on, it is the only ecclesiastical monument on Lewis and Harris. No doubt Stornoway has churches, but not such as are worth an honourable mention on the map.
You're quite right, except for Stornoway there are no other churches on Harris. In fact there's not much of anything in terms of man-made.
I’m not certain what I dislike more, gravel on the roadway, or manure from the farms. , or the occasional “ road apple “ from the Amish buggy’s power plant.
What kind of maintenance do you do on your motorcycle as you travel?
Hi Martin. Generally the BMW just needs the oil level checking between services.
As a farmer I can tell you that sheep are always looking for a new way to meet their maker.
That definitely explains it.
Magnificent! What a beautiful old church. Simply amazing! Blessings to you and continue to have a safe journey, Kevin!!! Cheers!
Many thanks, most appreciated.
The Lickisto Blackhouse campsite was on an old episode of Build a New Life in the Country which I watched just a few weeks back. I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s turned out as the owners were really struggling when they first started, so I hope it’s been a success!
Didn't know that. All I'll say for now is it was a memorable visit. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent now I’m intrigued 😄 I hope we get to find out why next week!
Hi Kevin. Does this area ever get snow?
Beautiful land/scenery. Thank you for sharing your adventures ❤!
I believe it does but not often due the open landscape.
19:18 TRESPASSERS WILL
😂 That was at the back of my mind.
Thanx from a grateful "passenger"!
Can anyone explain what that green surface
with white stripes on the lake is??
(@8:44). I'm coming up with all manner of crazy ideas...
I'm loving your motorcycle trip, Kevin, but I started pining for Aslan-
Problem solved-went back & watched a couple of episodes
on the Lancaster. It was nice to hear her rhythmic chugging💗.
Ride safe, bro.
I'm not sure but they are definitely some kind of floating platform. Maybe something as simple as a jetty for tying fishing boats to. Cheers for revisiting previous narrowboat videos. 🤗
One other wee point, again a bit like NC500, people gravitate to Harris & Lewis, and just ignore the Uists which, much to the annoyance of my family who come from the far north of Lewis, are far prettier.
my guess is the warmth of the paving
Personally I think sheep just sit on the roads for no other reason than to annoy the hell out of the drivers!
During your travels in Scotland have you or are you going to get anywhere near The Falkirk Wheel?
No the wheel is well into the mainland and I'm visiting the islands on this trip.
Question, besides sheep what kind of road hazards do you encounter?
Mainly sheep but also gravel, potholes and other road users. 🙂
the occasional nuclear submarine and also very often mating orangutans.
My sister in law was just traveling through Scotland, no ferry rides....what????
Many Bothys died to provide travelers with conveniences.
I've been hearing that many are in a terrible state now. Quite sad really.
@@CountryHouseGent oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. I've never heard of them before today so I was just trying to make a Star Wars joke. Cheers
Nice honest church, that. I'm the same, Kevin - not religious, admire the architecture.
They really should sweep the chippings up.
Unfortunately bothies are being ruined by parties of anti social scum. They're no go areas, afaic.
Drive that road at night😮
Yes I think it would be an experience, and one moments distraction ... 😳
"Adventure Bike"??🙊
You fallen for the silly marketing nonsense Kev.?
Every size and style of motorbike is an adventure bike, that is decided by the big nut holding onto the handlebars.
Quite possibly, though I am riding a BMW R1200GS "Adventure".
