I just got back into photography and just learning a whole lot about what I've been missing just purchased a 70d still learning about the best way possible to use it
I do - it's a blast to photograph with and I have overall been impressed with its performance.
It is only bringing over 1920 x 1080 files - so the transfer is very quick. The upload web service is tied into the EOS utility software on the computer and I can't get the program to do anything other than crash at the moment.
Very helpful guide , done everything step by step and my 6D up an running . thx for the tutorial.
Great video. Do you recommend this camera as i am buying one this week:-)
I wish I could easily answer this- the software on the computer seems buggy as hell and I can't get it to do anything other than freeze after the camera is connected. I will keep working on it.
Great Vid man - Just received my first DSLR (70D) Yesterday and I can say im very impressed. Having left the manual at home whilst im at work, I thought id look on youtube for some info vids and yours came up and it was very easy to follow the set up, connecting was easy and it was a good clear simple vid. Thanks. Ill be checking out some more of your vids on the canon 70d. Awesome camera!
interesting. i would like further info if you have. i'm in dilemma whether to get this 70D or 700D
Thanks Toby.
Having used an eye-fi card, this is a better choice. Having used a wired control with the DSLR App as a remote on my smartphone, I like the controls of that app better [but not the fact of being wired].
Knowing the limitations with using the wifi of the camera onto a tablet, are you able to download full resolution photos onto a computer?
How fast are the download speeds? 20 1.5 Meg photos downloaded = ? seconds. The camera's WiFi might not support full resolution downloads.
Good suggestions - I will add it to my list. Thanks!
You should be shooting RAW and adding a little sharpness and clarity in post but while shooting - have you watched my video on the sweet spot of lenses? You should watch that if you haven't
Very helpful video. i Was struggling to setup Wifi before this video watch. this video made easy.
This post feels a little spammy but the video is good. All shot with 70D?
And you have your network broadcasting the SSID? what letter you running A, B, G, N or?
I am a fan of yours and the simple way you provide the tutorials and reviews. I own both 700D and 70D...Also it seems that the new app been released by canon. Can you please update this tutorial with the newer version?
Is there any way to use the camera on more than one device? Not at the same time of course, but what if my iPad isn't available and I want to send the pictures to my iPhone? Thanks.
Both are excellent cameras. Very similar to the D5200 vs T5i debate - D7100 seems to still do just a tiny bit better in low light with less moire- 70D is a better performer with excellent buffer, sweet touchscreen and nice wifi.
Thanks CamerRec Toby for this tutorial but I don't have a android smartphone and wanted to use the wifi function to view the photos on my MacBook. Do you have a tutorial how to do that?
Wondering if you could maybe help me out. Been getting very frustrated with this app. I have the 70D and everything goes well until the camera tells me to start the app on my phone, I do so and nothing shows up on the app. I have the iphone 5. Please help if you can!
Good question - I haven't poked it yet. Will let you know when I figure it out :)
yes, please review the upload to web service function. Great vid, by the way, thank you. I only wish for a better sync so we can see the real time speed. It would have been useful.
thank you so much for the tutorial video
awesome review sir... thanks a bunch
Is there a difference between the wi-fi modes on the USA version and grey market versions of the D70 camera? I was told by one seller there was a incompatibility between grey market cameras and US wi-fi systems, i.e. the wi-fi would not work on a US device.
Toby like always you are a great person and very professional at what you do. I thank you for taking your time to answer my comment this means a lot to me. I know you are a busy person, if one day you can make a video going over the setting on the canon 70d for video I will really appreciated so far I can not find one specifically for the canon 70d there is many like for canon 60d or mark 2 and 3 but so far nothing for 70d best setting for video with little to none post work.
Thanks Toby
Agreed but should be able to pull video files off after the fact.
HELP: I am so confused - are ALL canon 70d wifi enabled? To record short videos what canon would you recommend? I am having a hard time making a decision/finding help -- I will be recoding beauty videos for my business (spa that sells makeup) to help my clients.
Great Job! Thanks
How can i change the nickname of the camera if it already had one? In the video it asked you to add one since it didn't have one already but mine has one already from the previous owner, how can i change it to something i prefer?
Not a wi-fi question - great video explains all - thanks for that - is there a way to plug the 70D into a ipad or android pad to monitor pictures whist shooting video? OR if using dslrcontroller is there a time lag? Using my GoPro via my iPhone there's about a two-second lag... annoying! Thanks.
TheRoses You can use the included EOS Utility software to do tethered shooting. It gives you real time feed with just a slight lag, certainly better than the GoPro. With DSLR controller there is very little lag - excellent system.
Thanks Toby, got my 6D running smoothly on wireless. Nice!
great vid man
Toby how can i get the most crispy picture quality recording video with out too much post processing, Most of my shutting is in day light, I have the 17 50mm 2.8 sigma, 24 105mm f4 L, 100mm ef f2.8 macro. If you could please let me know whats the best settings in picture quality and lens to use.
Thanks Toby I like everyone of your videos....
This is great, thanks for the overview 🐸
now can you tell me what will be a better option nikon D7100 or Canon 70D,i won't be shooting videos at all,i will only be doing photography with it! :)
can you do timelapse with this camera, canon70d + wifi + smartphone/tablet . or would one need a intervalometer
Frank N did you find the app for timelaps ?
Awesome video!
Is it a lower quality image and video if streamed wireless as compared to plugging it into the computer.
Since it's the image quality that we paid so much for... I really want to keep that high quality.
Also, is there a way to upload directly (from the camera) to Flickr / Tumlbr / twitter ect...
There is a way to upload directly through the hotspot feature - you need to set that up on the computer first and I honestly haven't tried yet. When streaming the images wirelessly to smartphone they are limited to smaller size, when streamed to computer you can do full resolution.
What is the difference between the EOS remote and Canon Camera Connect ? Thanks.
Pairing should happen within a few seconds if everything is working correctly.
Very helpful..thank you
Hallelujah! I thought I needed to purchase some ridiculous app and then some other dumb interface to make this happen. Shame you can't shoot video but still great news. Thanks for the informative easy-to-follow vid.
I have a question- connecting using the camera as a WAP, I find the wireless network on my Iphone and when I hit to connect, it just says "Unable to connect to this network". it doesnt prompt me for a password! Starting to frustrate the hell out of me.
Is it the same today (or canon fixed some things) ?
Hi! I have a few questions I can't find anywhere on the internet: 1) My canon 70d was pairing with my phone fine until I switched my wifi function on my phone to my home internet wifi. When I tried to switch back it asked for a password. I never created a password. How do I find out what it is? 2) Once paired with my phone, the option to switch to other devises (computer printer etc) wasn't available. The option was not given. How do I do this. Finally 3) I followed the instructions to connect the canon 70d with a usb cord and although I correctly turned OFF the wifi enable to disable, it still did not connect with my computer. Thank you.
sir, can we do live streaming using this 70D?
I want to use my Galaxy Note 10.1 as a remote wi-fi video monitor. Will this app allow for you to view the camera video on a tablet when in video mode? Specifically, I have no interest in capturing the actual video on the tablet, I just want to monitor the video close to me while shooting away from the 70D.
Sorry for delayed reply - No, it will not. When in video mode al WiFi is disabled. BUT you have an android device so the very awesome dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi_mr3040.php is a solution that I use and it allows exactly what you want.
hi i am looking for a camera like 5d mark III but should have a wifi , can you suggest me please any camera, my budget is equal to the prive of 5d III, i dont understand why dont they put wifi in cameras this 2014 fuuu
You should get the Canon 6D or even better the Nikon D750 full frame.
Thanks, I'm sure that [in time] you will.
This software reminds me of the Sinatra song: High Hopes.
Is it possible to watch realtime video on Your tablet WHILE you're filming via the wifi?
No - In fact the camera will not let you enter video mode when WiFi is enabled. It is an annoying limitation but it is also present in most cameras that provide WiFi at this time.
Hi Toby.. Is the 70d compatible with eyefi ?
David Eribake Yes it is.
THX Toby
Hello,
Thanks for the tutorial. My Canon 70D finds all my neighbour's wi-fi networks, but not my own... although I'm sitting less than one meter to the router.
Why is this?
Nuno Nogueira Make sure your wifi is broadcasting, not hidden?
PhotoRec Toby Thanks, it is broadcasting, since I'm using it right now to write this comment.
Nuno Nogueira No, not broadcasting as in using it but broadcasting as in making sure other devices can see it. A security measure often used to keep people from connecting is to not broadcast the SSID. Maybe you have that turned on. Not sure what else to tell you. Try changing your SSID?
+Nuno Nogueira Hi, I have the exact same problem. have you found a solution yet?
+Klmi Yes, the thing is the camera is not supposed to be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network. It will create its own network to which the phone will later connect to. I hope this makes sense, it took a while to make sense to me...
Is there a way to have the wifi setting on this camera to pair up with more than one smartphone? If I have the camera wifi settings to pair with my phone and whenever my wife wants to connect her phone to the camera via wifi, she has to erase the current wifi settings and start over to have it pair up with her smartphone. This is very inconvenient...
Hi John - You can create 2 different profiles for the smartphone connection. Set one up for you and one for your wife - switch between when needed. I think it is also possible to share one if you setup manually and leave password/encryption off but you do then risk having your camera "hacked" though I haven't heard of it happening.
It's good to hear that multiple profiles can be set, I will give this a try. (I was about to return this camera for this reason.) Thanks for your help and also posting great videos!
Would you be able to e-mail say 100 pictures to someone at one time?
شكرا
what app i can use for samsung note2.
Agreed!
Will it auto-download images to a laptop while out int he field?
This is a good question - I am not sure. I am on a mac and have had poor results using the software - it just keeps crashing. In theory I believe you should be able to do this.
I have my 70d - but have not tested this yet. I have the smartphone setup to remotely control the shutter speed, exposure, and ISO though - that is sweet!
You can have it save to either Camera alone or Camera Card and PC...
I got it to do it using my wireless router and a PC not tried it on a AD hoc type network.
It was really slow doing a Raw image. about 30 seconds a Pick.
I was unable to Tether it to Light room using the wireless :(
What is the Wireless band it uses ? N or G ?
You can transfer full size images if you convert Raw->JPEG in camera.
JPEGs wont be resized
It is not working anymore, I forgot my password for my canon 70D and now I do not know how to re-rest, any help?
My phone finds the wifi access point from my camera, but Camera Connect can't find my camera anyway. Anyone who knows a solution? It worked fine with my old phone but somehow it doesn't work with my new one.
Hi, my Canon EOS70D doesn't seem to be able to find my network. Any idea? :)
It is not working any more because they are asking my password for my canon 70D that I forget, I am unable to reset? any ideas how to do it, my iphone is uptodate
I have the same problem, did you find a solution that you may be able to share with me?
Can I do this with my iMac? I Synced my iPhone and iPad...but not my iMac...
If you install the EOS software that comes with your computer. Turthfully I have found it so buggy that I can't get it to connect on my Macbook but it should work.
way cool
CameraRec Toby This is what I want to do, and haven't been able yet.
I am having problem with connecting to the wi fi... The camera says "INCORRECT WIRELESS LAN ENCRYPTION KEY"... My wifi signal is coming from a router... Is that ok?
You are trying to connect to your home Wifi? What encryption do you have on that and have you selected everything to match on the camera side?
hi toby... got it now... had watched this video many times to figure it out only to find out that my wifi password was reset by my kid... lol.. thanks for this video... I like 70d... only consumes extra battery power when in full video auto focus mode... Thanks again...
I was setting it up and missed the password part. My phone is asking for my password. How do I reset it?
Post on my facebook page(linked below video) and I will share it out.
How do you pair it with EOS Utility?
You need to have the WFTPairing software running and then that acts as the bridge between your computer and the camera. It is a little buggy but I have gotten it to work.
The problem I was having was that the software it came with didn't work. I had to get the latest update. Thanks, not buggy any more just tedious.
derek peters What is the link to the update? I've spent hours trying to figure this out. Searching for WFTPairing software update on Canon's website yields nothing. I finally found a video showing the WFTPairing software button in the EOS utility folder inside the Application foloder and then figured out by accident that it did start running a very small camera icon on the top menu bar on my mac. clicking on that opens a screen, but my camera isn't there to activated the connection button.
canoneos.com
Use EOS Utility.
I think I'll get camranger to remotely record vid I wish this was native
Let me know how that works for you- I haven't tried it yet.
Oh no sorry, shouldn't be a spam!!! Jes I used the 70D. I tried a lot Cams i the last Time for small Videos like that. Grezz
Interesting that you didn't mention just how horrific the transfer speeds are between camera and a laptop using the EOS utility. By the time you get camera, access point and laptop close enough together to get a sluggish 20 second transfer of a RAW file from camera to laptop, you might as well be using a USB direct connection. Moving the camera just 20 feet away from the access point drives up the transfer time to more than 30 seconds. For professional shooting, the WIfi is pretty much useless. I was excited when I first read about the WiFi capability, but the reality is just a huge dissapointment
for those wondering with network issues on Galaxy S4 while attempting to connect to your 70D, this thread could be useful: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3605927
You can live stream but you cannot record that live stream, just watch it.
"Movie recording is disabled when Wi-Fi is enabled."
So, this device misses the point completely?
If your point is to start and stop video - yes, it is annoying but it isn't the only DSLR with this issue. A great workaround if you have an android device is the fantastic DSLR controller paired with the a little portable USB router- dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi_mr3040.php
Check this Video """ Canon 70D- Over The Limit """ by the way nice Video! :)
There is no touch screen on the Canon 6D so your video doesn't work.
What? No nudie pictures? dang.
thanks for the vid though. Was digging this function as well, but it looks like it was designed for phones from a few years ago.
it's ISO
not I - S - O
No video abilities...really?
Really - need to use a 3rd party controller and device like the DSLR Controller.
Why .....do ........ you........talk .......like ........that?
how long it takes for pairing????
