Autumn Dahlia Cuttings - a postscript

- The experiment started last october when I took 40 Dahlia cuttings, with the intention of rooting them and growing them on over the winter. Now, four months later, here is a short film that shows how the experiment is progressing..... I took 40 cuttings, lost 23 but added 3 secondary cuttings (cuttings off cuttings) over the period ........ so a 50% success, so far......
So interesting. I just took a bunch of cuttings from a friends' garden and came looking for evidence that I wasn't crazy. Thank you so much!
Super tubers already. Thanks for the follow up.
Thank you for this, I wasn’t sure if taking a cutting in the fall would be futile. I’ve got three dahlia I rescued from a pile late in the summer. They’re alive, but only one flower among them. I really would like them to multiply, this is the only color I’ve liked of what was on offer and now there is hope I might get more for next summer.
Super cuttings Clarice. Chillies are doing well. Looks a lot warmer with you. Heating still on here.
Well done, i will be doing this this year....hope your well...
Thank you for the great video! I was wondering how the autumn cuttings did the following summer? Did they make good blooms? Later than the dahlias by normal tubers? Thanks :)
Thanks for the video, I have started to have a go my self this year just for my front garden, will put a little video on soon.best regards Ray...
Good luck Ray, enjoy yourself ... Barry
vc131a thanks..cheers
Excellent!
Please more videos from you thanks for your time 🐞🐦👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
When summer is over I will need to lift up my tubers and bring inside during the winter. Is this when I plant them 1/2 in dirt, like your video, inside my home ....Then I can grow the cuttings off the tubers during the winter months? Thank you in advance.
Can you tell me at what point dahlias grow tubers?
Thank you!
Why November is that around your first frost date??
Do you have any new videos from this year? was interested to know if you replaced your gravel with the matting to stand the pots on this year and if so how you got on.
Simon Nute Simon, Nothing new on the blocks at the moment - I did do quite a lot of filming on taking the plants through to flowering last season, but was not satisfied with the finished work, so wondering about doing some additional bits this year to edit in .......... work is getting in the way at the moment though unfortunately. Yes I did replace the gravel with capilliary matting, but not entirely convinced - young roots grab into the matting so as soon as you pick up the pot they are broken off. Cleaner and more easily managed, but needs a little more thought..... Kind regards, Barry
Do dahlias like an alkaline or acidic soil? I love dahlias im hoping to get amazing results myself. Thank you for your video :)
I honestly do not know the answer to that ....... I make sure that I move them to a different patch on the allotment each year, it's usually been manured and had three year old compost dug into it over the winter. I then feed the plants with Miracle Grow Lawn Food during the growing season - they love it!
Thank you, my dahlias are finally coming thru :)
Will these bloom this same year?
I'm going to try this year as I had little sucess over wintering my tubers last year! The ones I left in the ground faired better but I do worry that we could get a bad winter again and I could loose them all!
You are not the only one, I too lost a lot of tubers last winter. It looks very untidy, but if you are leaving the tubers in the ground over winter do not remove the tops - if you do take off the tops it leaves the hollow stem open, so that it fills up with rain water thus rotting the tuber. If you dig up the tubers, always store upside down, so that any moisture can run out. This year too, I am bringing all tubers indoors to dry (instead of leaving them in the greenhouse or polytunnel) so that they do not stay damp for ver long....
Did you water them much during the winter?
