  • Over the past 3 or 4 months, you guys have watched my channel grow like crazy. And I often get asked if I was excited when I started to blow up, what was running through my mind, was I overwhelmed, did I feel more pressure?
Honestly, for so long I talked about my growth in only a positive way. I didn't want to seem ungrateful because honestly, I am so incredibly grateful for every single one of you and for everything that's happened up until this point. But my channel is built off of transparency and honesty. So today, I just want to be 100% honest and share the reality of growing fast on TH-cam. What you didn't see with my growth, my struggle with comparison, chasing views, and dealing with negativity. Thanks for hearing me out. XO, Cathrin

This is one of the most honest and vulnerable videos about this I think I've ever seen. The thing you're experiencing is what I call "View Validation" and it is one of the single most damaging things to the mental health of a creator and often destroys creativity and originality. Many creators experience this, even the largest creators on this platform and you're not alone. You weren't just an accidental success Catherine, you were an INEVITABLE SUCCESS. And everything you are feeling right now is valid.
TH-cam wasn't meant to become what it is, but here we are. And the most important thing anyone can do as a creator is get perspective on what they want this platform to mean for them, and how to make it "right size" in their life.

Thank you so much for this. 🧡 I am a small TH-camr who does compare myself to other smaller TH-camrs a lot and when I see them blowing up and I’m in the background, moving slowly, I do get discouraged. But I have to remember I’m here to enjoy the ride because if I don’t, that will come across in my videos and I’ll be running in circles. Congratulations on your success and thank you for sharing and encouraging us. 🌸

This is my favorite video of yours, Cath. This, right here, proves WHY you’re successful. You’re genuine, warm, and want to inspire others. You’re not focused on yourself, you aim to help, educate, and be as real as it gets.
Thank you for making this video and including these raw clips throughout your journey. No one sees what happens behind the scenes. I really needed to hear this today ❤️

I often relate to things Cathrin says and I know I would 100% react the way she did by trying to maximize the efficiency of getting pushed by youtube and put a lot of pressure on myself. I don't know if anyone is I to mbti but I'm intj and wouldn't be surprised if Cathrin is too 🤷🏼‍♀️

The thing that drew me into your channel was that you were not already super successful with 100k followers so I got to go along for the ride and I knew what you were saying was true and authentic. Most of the time you see TH-camrs talking about how they got their success but they got it like 10 years ago when TH-cam was very different so they don't have the best insight to TH-cam today. I must say I was loosing hope that it was possible to grow on TH-cam in 2019 but your channel proved that wrong. Keep going. Never stop.

Paint Coach Some people get lucky🍀 and she is the one. Do you really think 💭 just by working hard everyone will be succeed in life?

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Theyoutuberpolyglot yes I do. She isn’t lucky. Are you saying she is lucky TH-cam picked up one of her videos? If she was lucky she would have been a one hit wonder with only one successful video. If she didn’t have good content people would watch the one popular video then go to her other videos to see there wasn’t anything good. But that didn’t happen. I feel sorry for you that you think working hard doesn’t lead to success. If you truly work hard and give everything you have you will be successful. It might not take the form you imagined it would but it will be there.

@@paintcoach, This is not an invitation to watch my videos.
How do you know if my content is excellent or not if you haven't watched my videos? Back to your comment
Yes, I am saying she is lucky. Making great content is up to you. You can improve or develop your skills, talent, you name it, but that doesn't mean everyone will know your existence just because you make videos on TH-cam.
If someone promotes your content, you will be succeeded on TH-cam because you can always improve.
You haven't read my first comment in the commentary box. You feel sorry for me because I think working hard isn't always the key to succeed on TH-cam. Good point, now answer me this question. First, I am comparing her with other TH-camrs- it's not all about her. The question
Do you really think small TH-camrs don't work hard to hit their goal in life?
If the key is " Pull your sucks up to achieve all your goals in life, life would it be all fun and games."
How many artists work so hard and achieve nothing in life? I am so sorry, but I keep my point " She is lucky because she had the opportunity to grow on TH-cam.
I have watched some of your videos.
I really admire people like you. I suck at painting or drawing. I see a lot of work in your videos.
Why don't you have 70k subscribers like her? Now, do you think it's all about working hard, and success will knock at your door? You have to be at the right time, right place and having someone who is willing to support your dreams, goals, you name it. Yes, she is an inspiration, as some small TH-camrs who haven't the opportunity to have their 15 minutes of fame. My goal on TH-cam is helping people like you to learn at least one foreign language.
Oh, yeah, I am working hard on my project, and I am thinking about what I can do better next time.
Do you really care about my efforts? Do people care about your talent at painting?
As a paint Coach, can you tell me why is it so hard for some people to draw and paint well?
I have been trying to draw for years, but I haven't got better.

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Theyoutuberpolyglot If small TH-camrs are working hard and not seeing results they need to work harder. That might mean changing. Look at The Content Bug, she was trying to make it with blogging but she was aware enough to know to switch to TH-cam topics. You need to know what to work hard at. I could work all all day at being a good painter but if I don't work hard at sharing myself or going into galleries I will never have "success." Thats another thing. Defining success. Artists that work hard their whole life have success in their art but they probably didn't work too hard in promoting themselves. I can't tell you how many times I've seen artists with way more "success" than other artists with way higher skill level. That's because they focused on the right things for exposure. So if a TH-camr is trying really hard and not having any success for years they should probably take another look at how they are going about their channel. You also have to be patient. I have only been doing TH-cam for a year and a half and half of that time I really didn't know what I was doing. hahah Good things take time. It might takes years just to figure out exactly what your channel should focus on. But most people don't want to do that and throw in the towel and say "eh I gave it a try."

    • @Theyoutuberpolyglot

@@paintcoach If I don't work hard at sharing myself or going into galleries,,,, I will never have " Success" - you nailed it.
You have to promote yourself. That means to spend some money.
She spends a lot of money in her videos.
Going into galleries- Some of them might not accept your excellent work.
Having contacts, that is something complicated.
I guess you have to take a lot of risks and be brave enough to ask for help if you need to.
Some people don't want to lose face.
I would like to know in details how she got so many subscribers.
Sometimes, you have to do things you don't like, but other people want to watch.
In the past, I uploaded a video about something scalding- That video got a lot of views. I decided to delete that video.
I don't want to be famous just because I uploaded that awkward video.
Have you ever had that feeling, you are different? What do you like, most people don't like?
If you upload a video about Pediewpie, you will get a lot of views, but wait- Is that an original video? From my point of view- No
She uploads videos about how to grow on TH-cam. Yeah, these kinds of videos are useful for beginners, but I can't see any originality in her videos why?
Many TH-camrs talk about the same issue. Yeah, the style is a bit different.
I am trying to meet a TH-camr who create original and useful content. A very unique niche.
Your niche to my mind is handy because you teach us to develop a skill.
Educational videos are more useful than saying " I am going to tell you how much I earn with my channel or how I got from 0 to 1000 subscribers in a week or something like that."
It seems to me people care about famous people rather than their own lives.
I didn't search for these kinds of videos.
TH-cam recommends videos from her to me. TH-cam does it a lot.
      I don't know why.

I need to constantly remind my wife that 99% of the comments are great and that we can't let that 1% discourage us. I don't think most of the haters know how much their comments impact us. Anyways, I happened to click on Think Media's Live video when they hit a Million subs the other day and he went through the speakers they are going at the event and I saw you were on there! I spent four years in college to become a teacher and once I was finally in the classroom I felt the same way. I’ve been like a year on TH-cam and I have about 2000 subscribers and I come and go In waves from feeling like I’m a failure to try to make a better video that makes more views than the last one, and when it doesn’t I just feel like quitting. I keep checking my views and subscription count and I feel like I should be enjoying myself. I honestly never expected that TH-cam would be this hard, everyone told me Instagram was the worst to grow and well looks like I’m doing it the opposite way. Instagram is just easy for me and I created it to be able to be on TH-cam 🤦🏼‍♀️ so the point is we have to do this for fun and not for views, it’s the only way you won’t keep competing against yourself and getting hurt

But honestly I've had the same ISSUES you talked about in this video from rapid growth! You got this! You deserve this and you've worked hard for it! Congrats!

You're amazing and I have days that you had in October pretty much weekly. Like some days I just feel defeated, and I just want to get my channel off the ground. Mainly because I want to create a community on TH-cam and its frustrating when you try "all the tactics" and being truly genuine. I think the internal pressure TH-camrs put on themselves can cause a toxic relationship with themselves. You need to be true to yourself at the end of the day. You deserve your views, you deserve everything you've built. You've worked so hard, you're not an impostor. Totally get the "broke TH-camr chasing the numbers", but that's when I had to wait and realize it has to stop. You're enough, you deserve all this success girl!! I have days where I just need to remind myself that when it's time for my channel to grow to where I want it to be, it will happen in time. Your content has helped me grow so much, so thank you. Please dont worry about being judged, just focus on being yourself and enjoy your community you've created!! You need be so proud of your journey and we know you're a human being just like your community. This has been happening to me. Upload my first video in November, (have 7 videos now). One of my videos popped (at 600,000 views now), which shot my channel up "overnight". But I have been working hard for the last 8 years on other things - including starting a home design website (which got me understanding about Google's algorithm). Right now dealing with the self imposed pressure of keeping my revenue up (up to $17-24 cpm). But my videos take a long time to make - so it can be discouraging. Something I am planning on doing, is to slowly start a second channel (Business History), which will take the mental and emotional pressure off of my first channel. Linus from Linus Tech Tips, talked in a video recently about how having more than one channel has helped balanced things out for him (revenue and views down on one channel, but up on another), and that could be his strategy for going forward - managing and starting multiple channels.

I think I commented on a video of yours in October saying that your recent growth had inspired me that it was possible and then December hit me. The pressure I've put on myself to make great videos and prove myself to my new audience is overwhelming (and I even struggled in the same way with the comments, feeling that not responding to everyone was betraying the community I'd built). Three days ago, your number of subscribers was 10,000 less than today. And this video most likely convinced the new followers that your channel is worth it.
Prior to this video, it seemed a bit that your content was growing thin even as the production value was getting better.
But in this video, you moved the camera from your face to the [umbrella lighting] and for some reason, that single move summed up your credo of being transparent and backing up your advice with evidence.
Yes, you have crossed another milestone, and for that congratulations for talking about imposter syndrome.

"I can only be responsible for how I feel, not for the way other people feel."
I was thinking about uploading a video just talking about this because two nights ago friend of mine said that a lot of people think I judge them and feel like I'm better then them because eI always post about how happy I am. And so He was basically saying that my success was making other people feel like they had to do what I was doing. He literally told me, "that birthday post you made where you said you feel so blessed and loved and that you even saw a shooting star, thats great but it made a lot of people who didn't feel those things feel shitty."
And I just was so sad that he's stuck in such a victim mindset, where he thinks that me living my life and my happiness has anything to do with him at all. I can not be responsible for his feelings and emotions, especially when the things I'm doing have nothing to do with him. It was a real eye-opener that I'm doing this for me, and that makes me happy.

Dear @TheContentBug, redoing a scene 15 times is perfectly fine if you want it to be perfect for your viewers, but doing it so you get no bad comments it's actually something that you cannot control. Haters are part of life, the more successful you are the more haters that your are going to get, but don't forget you will get many more followers. I recently started a youtube channel about medicine and I was teaching people about the coronavirus, doing my effort for getting reliable information and also learning to record in front of a camera, editing, etc.. and guess what? I received 3 dislikes, maybe my title was wrong, maybe they associated my surname with Chinese people, I don't know, so what I mean, some people will give you dislikes, because of envy or just because they are kidding, so keep doing what you love and keep doing your best, you are in the right way. P.D. Nice video.

I worked my butt off to get there and now that I've made it, I just keep working harder and harder towards my next goals. Know this, we all go through what you went through; chasing views, getting lost in the analytics etc etc. I am so happy and so proud that you saw your way through it and now have realized that you need to fall back in love with your channel, for the heart of your channel. Not for the view counter. Also know this, although I haven't been in your comment section until today, you have inspired me in so many ways. I have even incorporated some of your techniques into my channel. I watch every single new video you put out, I have binged watched most of your previous videos. You are doing great work. Keep it up. I am huge fan of yours. Don't let the trolls get to you. Seriously, no matter how good you are, the trolls will always be there. That's how they survive. Just ignore them. Seriously, your fans love you. The trolls don't matter. If it helps, think of it this way, even the trolls are helping you with the algorithm; every negative comment or thumbs down, still helps you. It’s an odd reality to try and educate people and get negativity from it...advice? Delete the mean people and move on, life is too short and you have SO many more who think you’re wonderful! 💜

It can be easy to get obssesed with vanity metrics such as tons of views and subscribers. Of course we need views and subscribers, but we really don't need a super crazy huge amount to bring value, uplift others, help them with their problems, live out our purpose and natural gifts and make a good income as well. What we need is true fans. You can have a giant amount of subscribers, but only a smaller amount of those are going to be your true fans who like you for you and your true authentic self. These are the people that will stick around no matter what. These are the people that will buy your courses, ebooks, group coaching etc... And you won't need thousands of these true fans to be extremely happy, fulfilled and make a great income. Its about the people you serve and care for.
I'm only getting started, but I know this is the path for me. I learned all of this from George Kao. Please check him out on TH-cam and give it a chance :)

Wow Cath! This video is exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been working on my TH-cam channel’s growth for almost 3 years now and even though I’ve seen growth, it has been very miniscule.
Yet, the one thing that keeps me going is the fact that I’m naturally the type of person who NEVER gives up. Even if I never get to see the success I want to see on my work.
Right now I’m battling through depression because I’m graduating university and I feel pressured by my parents to continue to grad school, I’ve even gotten the chance to do my interviews but to be honest my only wish in the world is to get the chance to work on being a content creator on TH-cam full time.
    That is my dream.
I feel very scared I will make the wrong decision and turn down an opportunity to go to grad school to chase my dreams in order to take that risk to purse TH-cam full time and fail to do so but I thank you for bringing me light.

I commend you for sharing this. I had a video of mine do substantially better than my average and I beat myself up over the fact that all of my videos after that one didn't do as well. It can be very demotivating. I stopped making content for several months because I was like "I don't know how to keep going in that direction." I personally had to take a mental health break from TH-cam and collect my thoughts. Keep doing what you're doing! I think that your content is amazing and I truly hope the best for you!

Oh thank you so so much! I've taken a step back from checking my analytics because that became unhealthy. But for me, I honestly like creating! The process of making videos is fun but it is easy to slip into that mindset of wanting to do better and better

    • @JakeWeide
      @JakeWeide 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@CathrinManning I completely get that! I was getting so focused on the analytics of my videos and it can definitely become unhealthy. I'm definitely a perfectionist when it comes to my work and it's really hard when you put so much time and effort into something that doesn't end up performing the way that you expect. I feel the same way, I absolutely love making videos. I've been on and off of TH-cam since about 2007 but I only got really into it about two years ago just doing it for me.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Cath! I had been wondering about how it affects people mentally. I know imposter syndrome is hard to get rid off, but in my opinion you definitely deserve all of this :) I am still very small, but thanks to you I went from 350 to 550 in 2 months. It took me almost 2 years to get the same amount of subs before I found you, and I'm on my way of reaching 1k this year!! So yea, you totally deserve it! I know I'm not the only on either. It kind of baffles me that you get hate. But, people will always hate on others who are successful.

I really wanted to grow as well like at least be monetized this year. Sometimes, I couldn't help comparing myself from other youtubers or just ordinary people who uploaded vlogs of their travels and blow up. Sometimes, I think, why doesn't it happen to me yet?

You are so humble and you deserve your success! I’ve said this before - you are so relatable and you inspire the rest of us who just feel like “normal” people making videos.
Seriously, I have been laughed at and essentially told that no one wants to watch a mom make videos - but somehow I muster up the inspiration to keep going (because of people like you).

It’s sound like you may be facing “ fear of failure “ or “ fear of success “ ( happens a lot with success, winning the lotto, a person ship come in, etc)but the truth is you worked two years to get to this point and you earned it all and more. Grow your self love because you are worth it. I have a new TH-cam channel with 50 subscribers and I have haters already so I know you have them but focus on the 👍🏾 thumbs up. I love this video! I think a lot of people have no idea once they have a video take off. When I had my first video on my old channel take off I had no planned strategy. I just kept uploading on my normal schedule and that's it. I was that content creator that saw a huge spike in growth, but then it came crashing down. I really like how you talk about how you had a strategy for not only more growth, but monetization. If TH-camrs want to keep growing then, they really need a business plan. Great video as always and I look forward to seeing you hit 100k subs!

One of your best videos yet! You are experiencing what a New Artist Sensation experiences when they break through into fame overnight! They are left with having to please the audience with their music sensation and also respond to those who wants to tear them down but they soon learn.....that the only way to do it, is to get in the mind frame that any publicity either good or bad, it’s......PUBLICITY! So everything is good! As long as you continue to be transparent, there will be those followers who will respond to the haters and fight the battle for you....and that’s......when you...really got it. You are really thinking better and preparing yourself for the haters, but you have already done so!
