Redarc Redvision Install, Garmin Tread XL Overland & New Drawer System (Major Updates To The Hilux)

- This was a set of upgrades that I was seriously looking forward too! The @REDARCElectronics Redvision system and the Manager 30 available from 4x4 Megaworld in South Africa, is something I have seen across the world on some of the top Overlanding and 4x4 channels, and when Redarc approached me to give it a go for myself, I couldnt wait to get my hands on the kit and do a nice DIY install with my dad, and with some help of bushtech to help make it look finished with some carpeting it was all finally finished and ready to show you! While we were installing the redarc system we actually got to remove the @BushtechCanopiesAccessories drawer system in my vehicle and replace it with their latest updated version, featuring lock out slides, an impressive 20+kg weight reduction, updates to the fridge cage as well as new fridge mounting system and display cutout. All changes that I welcome with open arms! Next up we installed an ARB High Output Compressor from @4x4MegaWorld_Africa allowing us to really reshape the cupboard on my canopy to be much more accessible and functional. A bonus surprise was the Garmin Tread XL Overland Edition that I got to try out for my next upcoming trip, it comes with a built in Garmin InReach Satellite communication and a slew of beautiful new upgrades, hybridising between the Tread and Overlander, in conjunction with InReach means this is going to be epic on our next adventure!

The tread sounds cool, got the overlander and the garmin PowerSwitch really like that system. Your built in SOS on the tread is cool. As you say the garmin systems really work well together.

Just a pitty the red arc is above alot of people's budget but really good products. The conopy/tray setup is a game changer. SA need to get with the trend. It takes the vehicle to the next level. GPS is an awesome piece of kit.
The redvision system certainly isnt cheap but it does offer something really unique and valuable. You will be surprised how competitively priced redarcs other products are though; check out their bcdc chargers on 4x4megaworlds site sometime, youll be surprised.

I did notice that, that here in Australia, with our utes (aka pickups or bakkies), it's more common to remove the entire tub and replace it with a whole canopy setup. But there in Sth Africa (& Nth America), building on top of the OEM tub is preferred - including slide on campers.
Yup its very weird how thats happened. But both have their merits. Itll be interesting to see as the series develops how the pro's and cons for each are revealed.
Hi Adrian. Great video and setup! Who do you recommend is the "go to" people to install the RedArc, shelves, drawer water tank, compressor etc? Is there a "one stop shop"? Appreciate Frans
Thats a great question Frans! So You can order everything and get it install at a 4x4 Megaworld, I recommend either the Klerksdorp store, Bryanston store if you joburg side or the Paarden Island batch in the western cape. They might try recommend you their local suppliers or canopy etc; but if you specify you want a Bushtech canopy and a Bushtech drawersystem they can indeed order them for you, and if you have any trouble tell them you chatted to me!
Hi Adrian, your videos are a huge inspiration and I'm trying to mirror a lot in my Ranger Double Cab. It's humble guys like you that inspire us to save up and do regular overland trips as a break away from the rat race.
I'm about to do a Dual Battery System with the National Lunar 90l Fridge like yours. When comparing apples to apples, would you recommend the National lunar Green Box DC to DC charger or the equivalent Redarc 25A? I'm just running the fridge, the same canopy lights as you and then the one camp light with telescopic pole, so no need for the redvision and management30 setup just yet. Just doing what I can afford for now :) Also, who would you recommend I do the fitment with? (Based on the choice that you recommend). Would really appreciate your advice 🙏
Thanks so much for the kind words! The Redarc BCDC25 is an excellent product, especially if you pair it up with a lithium battery that has a battery management system that’s compatible with a phone app. 👌🏻 installation depends on where you are situated really! Have you watched the budget build episode where we run through the info on the BCDC25 at all?
Hi there . Looking great. Both the build and your journey. Congratulations! Besides from weight , any reason you have not put a solar panel on the roof? Might be less important with the lithium, but having near constant charge ( Daylight/ weather permitting) is great. Provided you are not in a shady campsite for long, you could leave the blanket behind and not have that to worry about?
I do really want to put on fixed panels; and the plan is in action. I would still keep the solar blanket for a bit of extra oomph on those cloudy days or placing a panel further from the vehicle
In your experience so far, would you recommend the Garmin Overlander Tread over a Garmin Overlander + InReach Mini (2) combination? I'm at the point where I'm looking at navigation options for my Jimny. Since I do a lot of solo stuff, the Tread is an attractive option with build in SOS, but in a nutshell, the Tread is few grand more than just purchasing the "normal" overalnder and inreach mini separately. Would appreciate your thoughts!
Really good question! I personally really like the Overlander and Inreach combo; but let me throw a spanner in the works for you. I’ve been playing with the Garmin Montana 700i it’s a smaller unit, more accurate gps, detailed maps and InReach built in! And it’s cheaper

Congrats on the cruiser Hansie! The redarc system as of Megaworld's pricing is about 54K i think then I did a hubble lithium battery which cost me 6k so round a bout 60K I reckon. Its certainly not cheap but it's something that will move from vehicle to vehicle over the years.
Adrian, is that still the 90 litre fridge, and I can't tell from the video if that is the equal or unequal drawers?

Loving the tread 🤙🏻 requires less admin to get running. Just update to the latest software and hit the road. Which I’ve really liked
@@RoamOverlanding Thanks, I'm just trying to weigh up if its worth the extra 15k... in your older videos you do mention the overlander is a great Garmin. If you had to look at it coldly would you say its worth every cent of the 15k extra?
That’s a tough one…. If you could pickup a second hand Overlander and an InReach mini 2; that may be a great deal 🤙🏻 but the Tread with the InReach closes that gap pretty quite from the 15 👍🏻
Why did you put the redarc system where you did? Seems to be taking up important and useable space. Couldn’t you tuck it away on the headboard somewhere? Also, it looks like you’re about to do the Namakwa Trail. I was just there. Would love to know your plans for the route. We took it very easy. Slept 6 nights on the trail from Klein Pella to Vioolsdrift.
The headboard doesn’t actually have enough space with a cab slider in, I also wanted everything to be easily accessible in case I need to work on it or change things up. If it had tucked it all away in a place and needed to unpack the whole vehicle to work on it, it would drive me crazy. I was using that space for the same thing before, I like having central access to my power and switching for my campsite. So personally I haven’t found it’s location a problem, if anything I’ve really enjoyed where it is 👍🏻 4x4 eco trail was amazing, we did 4 days only from Pella to Alexander bay but geez it was beautiful!
Another question regarding Garmin Tread. Does your wifi drop when screen times out after 30 minutes? Then you need to restart wifi again manually. I have been downloading satellite images and takes forever as wifi drops. Garmin is sending me a free USB charger to try. Which won't matter.... Probably need to replace my unit.
Weird, never encountered that issue. I plug it into the computer some times, and do all the updates there if it’s a big one.
Does the T4A maps work well with the Garmin Tread?

Is it hard to look after that beautiful paint job you have? I mean the tub when you get stuff out or plug in the air compressor hose etc. I can see straight away the 79' looks very heavy at the rear. I really like your Hilux setup.
the paint is actually holding up really well! Its a truck paint, so similar to what gets used on fire trucks; so its really tough! Just a bit tricky to polish when it does get scratches. I've been loving the hilux setup too; I wouldnt go the cruiser route personally.

Great changes but where did the kitchen go?
I haven’t had the kitchen for years; I changed it to a charging area a long time ago 👌🏻 I felt the kitchen unit was overkill for 1/2 people personally, I have plenty space in the drawer system for all that stuff 👍🏻
Just purchased a Tread Overland. Have you had trouble with getting T4A POIs showing up? Can't get all the POIs I see on Basecamp to show on the GPS.
Nevermind. T4A sent me the guide file which needed to be installed.
You should also just make sure the device is up to date on its latest firmware 🤙🏻

what is the price of this redarc system in comparison to the national luna dc25? and what if something goes wrong in this system while in the bush, is there a way to bypass and continue using the battery system ?
So obviously this Redvision system with the Manager30 is a lot more comprehensive than say an NLDC25 so a lot more expensive. But if you compare apples to apples a Redarc BCDC25 is R5800.00 and an NLDC25 is R6200.00; A Manager30 is around R25,000.00 but then also includes the 30A AC charging system which you could get a standalone unit for like R4000; then you need a Bus bar for measuring the current draw on your system and a bunch of wiring and extra's. When it all works out the systems are very comparative I just like that the Manager30 is a 1 stop shop. It's just the Redvision "brain" that takes it all to the next level. I really like the simplicity of the Redarc system, they really do try and make it fool proof. This will apply in the bush too, their systems are well fused and designed to work together, there are fuse overrides on the TVMS80 for your outputs so if you need to force something on you can. Most of the other people I see using the Redarc systems have managed to do it themselves; in the upcoming trip that helped me out because I made 2 mistakes in my install that later come to bite me in the butt; but I was capable of resolving them very simply in my campsite. Spoiler alert; I just finished a 35day trip using the setup and it was AWESOME. being able to manage everything so easily was actually super fun. But Im a big nerd and very easily entertained! :)
What is happening with the budget build you were doing?
It's still around; the content will come in when its ready. Vehicle is currently having the engine. rebuilt etc and waiting for a couple parts, will have a video update soon.
Wow! The screen on that Garmin Tread XL Overland is huge. On where you have it mounted, how much of your vision is blocked towards the left side? 'Coz the 7" screen of my Hema HX-1 blocks a fair bit mounted at the same place. Have you thought of mounting it where your rear vision mirror is?
It takes a lot less visual space than if higher. I actually just look over it so it’s not much more in the way than my front bumper is; higher up would definitely not be great. I don’t think the XL is for every vehicle but they do have a more normal sized version too 😂 it shocked me when it arrived. But I must say the big screen is super nice!

I'm saving for a Garmin Overlander, but now I find out about the Garmin Tread with an awesome 10" screen - woah! I like it but I don't need a built-in inReach. I wonder if Garmin will release a version without one? Perhaps release a 10" version of the Overlander - I like the Overlander's rugged exterior design. Without an inReach built-in, I'm sure it'll be cheaper too. 🤞
Greetings from West Virginia, USA. I have the Hilux cousin the Tacoma with a six cylinder Petrol. I have installed a Alu-Cab Canopy, Gen. 3.1 RRT and a 270 Awning so far. I have a question, what water tank did you install in you bed. Here in the US it looks like were more like the South Africans than the Australians. Also I just subscribed and looking forward to more video's.
Welcome to the show! Sounds like you’ve got one epic rig! I use a 55L Pioneer plastics water tank; it sits at the back of my drawersystem; and is secured by 2 angle iron brackets that hold it in place 👌🏻
Hello, I have a Toyota Hilux Invincible pickup and I want to buy a navigator for this vehicle I am stuck between Garmin Tread Overland Edition 10" and 8" versions, which size would be more suitable for this vehicle? I ask for your opinion. Thank you.
The 10” is what I run, and it’s been working great for me 🤙🏻
How are you find T4A on the Tread XL? T4A have just stopped selling it as the say "Please note: we no longer sell this unit since we do not consider it to be compatible to our routing"
Well we use it and it works great, so I’m not so sure what they’re referring to exactly. I think the Tread is a beautiful specimen of a GPS 👌🏻 the last time I used Tread XL was for that particular trip, so my new one arrives soon and I will be using that full time. @@RoamOverlanding I spoke with T4A and they said that the new Garmin Treads dont take into account the T4A customer routing and timings like the older devices. I have still ordered one as it seem to be the best off road GPS even if the estimated times are not quite right with T4A 😉

Hey Drew! Still running the 500-700 parabolics indeed! Have recently upgraded to the Proshocks too so will post a video about that soon too 👌🏻 I’m sure my rig is at or slightly over GVM once fully loaded up with liquids and passengers. I don’t have the balls to weigh it 😂😂

Redvision vehicle management unit is nice to have but at the cost of around R29000, it does break the bank.
I would look more at starting with a manager 30 and then upgrading to the redvision down the line; the manager 30 on its own gives you a small display that shows the current draw and input; you will just have to do a bit more work on your fuses and switching . Otherwise Redarc also have very affordable BCDC chargers which everything up to the 40A will be compatible with a redvision at a later stage too. So there is something for everyone.

How extensively have you used and reviewed the Tread XL, getting a lot of negative feedback on various overland forums, and not to mention the price tag?
i used it for 30days of traveling across SA, it was pretty awesome for me. Only issue I had was that the track recorder only saved up to 10 days of recording instead of my whole 30 day trip so I lost some of that data; but i think its because the track recorder now records a lot more info. Otherwise still great. I am a big fan of the Montana 700i if youre looking for top notch gps with built in inreach, its just not going to give you a massive screen, but will give multipurpose for hiking, biking etc too
I work at Outdoor warehouse. And we have (basically) been trained to believe that snomaster camping fridges have surpassed their NL enemies when it comes to reliability. What is your take on this😂😂
Definitely not what I've seen or experienced; both are great fridges but i think its hard to beat NL's quality and reliability. Not uncommon to hear of people having their fridges for 10-15years. Dont actually know too many folks with Snomasters so I might be biased :P

Yup, I did try to make that clear in the video. It's not really a donation, its more of a work agreement. Typically a sponsorship will involve a set of deliverables in exchange for a product or payment. So nothing is ever really "Free"
