  • We have arrived in Cape Town at the Terrain Tamer Africa HQ, and its time to upgrade my Heavy Duty Shocks to the Adjustable Pro Shock Absorbers! Its an exciting change and something I look forward to testing out and pushing to the limit on my Hilux! With 20 Days of epic adventure a head of us it would be the perfect time to give these shocks a great run! We look at and explain what the difference is between a Monotube shock and a standard shock, and also look at how the adjustments change the compression of the shocks! We run into some trouble with my steering components needing a huge amount of work, so Terrain Tamer stepped in and helped by replacing all of the components, from Steering rack ends to Tie rod ends, Stabilizer linkages, Camber bolts and Balljoints for the Lower Control arms. It was a huge amount of work, but all in all so worth it for the longevity of the vehicle and the new suspension!

Yes, adjustable shocks with remote reservoir are highly recommended in maintaining a great ride no matter the road surface you're on (specially if its for both high & low speed compression, and rebound). Before fitting a set on my 4WD, I thought once I set it to my liking, I'll probably not change it again. But I was wrong. Now I have a setting for corrugations, rough gravel, sand and tarmac. And these change again depending on my load. And being able to change the setting without requiring a tool is best. It's a game changer for me personally.👍

It’s like the first time I used tire pressure monitors, now I can’t understand how I ever went without it 😂

There excellent shocks I agree, keep in mind on dirt and gravel roads & tracks inspect the reservoir mountings in the morning and evenings especially if your on corrugated ones, as the reservoir where it is mounted/attached can crack, snap or come loose, that where zip ties and wire come in handy as is learning how to stick weld with a car battery.

Thanks For the Video bud, its a common fault on Toyotas for those adjusting bolts to seize, its the corrosion. But its great to know TT keeps the spares. Thanks Bud.

I also have the TT parabolic leafs, smart coils and Pro shocks on my Hilux Legend50 (along with Ironman ProForge upper control arms). Eventually figured out the optimum settings for tar, gravel, corrugated gravel and heavy off-roading - the ride is brilliant, so much better than before (but to get the most out of them tyre pressures are also an important part of the equation). I got mine specifically for long distances on bad gravel; I now have the ride of a top-end luxury sedan, with more load-carrying capacity and off-road ability than the standard vehicle. Adjusting all four takes 40 seconds, no tools, so adjusting for different situations as they arise is a breeze. They might not have the two or three-way adjustments of some of the other brands, but some of those can be a bit of a pain to adjust. I reckon a good upgrade if the budget is there - it wasn't cheap.

I've been running the pro shocks and parabolics on my hilux for a few years now and they're great. The adjustability adds a new dimensions travelling on and off road.

Adjustable shocks definitely a great way to go. You can play around with the settings to find that perfect balance. I am running koni heavy tracks Adjustable shocks in my jimny, love it!

I wonder if it’ll ever be possible to change the settings digitally? Nothing will better the reliability of an actual physical switch/button, but imagine the convenience of controlling it via an app.

So there are companies in the states like Icon Vehicle Dynamics that actually have this on their high end shocks, pretty crazy technology

Nice video Bud, I also walked into that Pandora’s box with only a shock upgrade in mind and walking out 15k poorer after lower control arms etc. was in poor shape.

Another fine video.👍 I'm a fan of remote reservoir adjustable shocks, and if you have the budget, I highly recommend them. Specially if you constantly vary the weight you carry on your 4WD over various road surfaces, and care very much about the ride quality and handling of your rig. Unless you experience them, you don't realise how much handier having adjustable shocks can be.

Thoroughly enjoying them, they’ve been great on tar especially wet tar; tough enough to happily go through the Namakwa 4x4 eco trail and Richtersveld. Quiet, fuel efficient and basically a great all rounder. The specific thing of it though is to get the one with an LT rating for overlanding. And the white sidewall will scar when used on really rough trails, so I’ve had to turn mine around after the last trip

@roamoverlanding I am curious why you change over from Fox suspension?? I am looking to change factory setuo on 2023 Hilux. Would appreciate your view.
Hilux will be a daily driver and used 4 x per year for overlanding. Will just add a canopy, extra battery, slider or drawers , fridge/freezer, roof top tent and a shower.

A expanded body twin tube setup from Terraintamer with their smart coils and even just normal leaf pack in the back would be perfect 🤙🏻 it has a great ride, you just need to pick the correct weighting coils, which we have put quite a lot of effort into getting right for different vehicle setups. The adjustable is nice, but it’s not for everyone. And the twin tubes have a nice comfortable drive. 🤙🏻
