Was a week into the most debilitating sciatic pain I’ve experienced and my physiotherapist wasn’t sure what the cause was and suspected a disc issue. Found this video last night which led to a few more other videos describing how to release the piriformis. Tried it this morning and my sciatica has pretty much disappeared in the course of a day! The feeling in my left foot has even started to come back. I know the comments section on videos like this are always people saying how much it helped them, so I’m SO thankful that I get to add a comment like that!! Thank you so much!!

I would not feel so all alone, most ppl I know attribute life changing debilitation to decisions made by their doctors when they still trusted them. I’m one. If you must have a medical doctor, I say find one who is older. The young corporate drones live by the hypocritical oath: “the patient!? Fuck the patient. This is about my career!”

Sir. You are saving my life. 20 yrs, a specialist, X-rays, MRI, physical therapy, 5 chiropractors, orthotics, EVERYTHING and not once did anyone mention a trocanteric belt. In all my research somehow never came across it!
I am angry and sad, but mostly THANKFUL to have finally found YOU. Hearing you say “don’t give up” brings me to tears.
So many years, so much pain, not being able to trust my own body to do simple things or enjoy activities without fear of the pain to follow…

I’ve been dealing with intense sciatic pain for close to 10 years now (carrying three babies & a couple of falls have led to instability in muscles and ligaments).
My doctor was testing for a SI dysfunction but it’s never been fully determined.
I have a pelvic MRI coming up. Which I’ve never had.
I know i have a posterior pelvis tilt with a hip hike on the left which seems make my left leg “shorter” (all pain is on the left side).
Along with the belt, ice, heat and rest I’ve been doing my own trigger point release on the piriformis muscle which has helped greatly. Most inflammation meds don’t touch the pain.
I will try the flossing & avoid shearing.
Thank you for the encouragement and helpful videos!!

Thankyou …Dr Brant. I have been suffering with L4 L5 disc bulge followed by SI joint dysfunction and tail bone pain. The moment you said “Don’t give up” really brought tears in my eyes. The pain I’ve been thru both physically mentally and psychologically is just so miserable. It took me more than 6 months to heal and go thru all the pain. And finally understand my situation because not all doctors are so knowledgeable and not everyone gives the right advice. I one could heal by rest and physiotheraphy. Your video is one of the best videos I found on internet and so well explained. Other doctors should learn from you. Really appreciate. Thank you doc. ❤

There is also a connection from sitting for long hours and hamstring muscles getting shortened , pulls on quadradus lumborum which pull on the c4 backbone that pinched your sciatic nerve or the other nerve that runs through your secrael foramen , both causing similar pain to siatica

I've recently been diagnosed with mild scoliosis and have been under chiropractic care for several months, which has helped. I've also started using an inversion table daily at home in between treatments. My lingering problem is numbness/tingling in my buttocks and not being able to stand or sit for any length of time, although standing is slightly easier. Movement and walking doesn't bother me at all, thankfully. My SI joint itself doesn't hurt, but I'm sure it's the cause of this problem, and the root cause of that is the scoliosis. I'm just so confused as to which exercises I should be doing that will help with all of this but not make the scoliosis worse. One channel will say do certain exercises and the next channel will say the exact opposite - so hard to know what is right! Your channel is by far the best I've found - the explanations of how everything is tied together and what causes pain is so helpful! A video re: scoliosis would be helpful for those of us in that situation.

I just found this channel yesterday and thank you so much! I apologize in advance for this long comment. I have adhd as well so I'm giving the background as well as asking a question (or two).
I you do another video: I have had lower back pain since the last couple months I was pregnant 6 1/2 years ago so it's been going on maybe 6 3/4 years now. I was managing it alone for a long time. I went to my primary care who sent me to a pain clinic since I've also had 2 knee surgeries and have osteoarthritis in my right knee. I went to a chiropractor a couple years ago and he told me I had sciatica and my back was out of alignment. We just moved and it took a few months to finish the moving process, but the pain got MUCH worse during/after that. It's been massively hurting ever since. It took a fight to get accepted, but I finally found a different orthopedic doctor who would see me after my primary care had an xray done. The orthopedist did a few tests, including the finger point test, and he immediately hit the nail on the head. I thought the pain was mostly near the spine but as soon as he put his finger directly on the area, it registered with my brain (like my brain was confused lol) and I can clearly feel it's my hip now. I invested in a belt from Amazon (before seeing this channel) since we were going out of town and the difference it immediately made was incredible! My husband also had a Purple gel seat that he gave to me because i have massive pain while sitting. The orthpedist also gave me an injection which made my hip sore for 3 days and felt like it sometimes helped but sometimes I would still feel the pain. He now wants an MRI and fighting with insurance to get it approved so we can do that. Then 2 nights ago, I stupidly took off the belt thinking I would be fine just simply feeding the cats since I was only mildly uncomfortable. When I was done, I was walking up 6 stairs to get in the back door of the house and when I got up those stairs, I sat down for just a minute (on after thought I realized my legs were higher up than normal when I was sitting and I was also slightly leaning over as well) to pet one of the cats we have, and when I went to stand up, I felt the pain worse than usual about half way up, and when I went to walk in the door I realized my left hip, which I don't typically have noticeable issues with, became extremely painful to the point I couldn't move my left leg due to the pain for a minute. Once I gave myself a minute, I was able to take 5 steps to get to the bedroom where my husband was able to help me from there. I'm still massively hurting and was basically bedridden yesterday. I figured maybe if I gave it a little bit to heal from whatever I did, and didn't use the joints unless I needed to, maybe the pain would ease a little. I'm under a contract with my primary care for tramadol and a muscle relaxer so I felt going to the ER was going to be pointless as I wasn't going to be able to accept any pain medication they tried to prescribe me.
My question is this now that Ive given the long backstory 😂. Since this issue has been going on so long,, is this something I'm going to be stuck with? I've been using the belt for over a month now and it helps while I have it on, but when I take it off, it typically comes back.
If you do see this and reply, thank you! I know it's a lot.

My GP back in my home state diagnosed me with Sciatica many years ago, an old dancing injury plays into this a lot amongst other underlying issues.
Today has been exceptionally painful, and am currently laying on my bed with my legs propped up against the wall.
I just checked the soles of my shoes, and have noticed the left foot has worn through faster than the right.

I ve been going through this for 18 months it’s tingling into the feet, pain in my outer hip and buttocks and into groin. The central soreness comes from the SI joint region on both sides. If I place my hands on my hips and my thumbs over the SI area on both sides I get soreness, tingling in my feet and a sharp sciatic pain into my buttock. It goes away as soon as I stop pressing on that area. I struggle laying on my back even with pillows under my knees and sitting for a long time or on a hard chair all bring on discomfort and start the tingling into my foot. It’s worse by far on the right side. I have also had tingling into the pelvic region. I find stretching my legs straight and pointing my toes out whilst laying on my side make me feel better. I usually now sleep only on my left side. I tried the SI belt and as soon as I wore it it made the tingling worse. I press my back and my foot tingles. I ve had 2 MRIs and seen 3 physios. I had a nerve conduction test that came back negative for the cause direct from my spine. This all started when I arched back a few times over a few days. I did this very quickly and then the tingling gradually started. I m thinking I injured my SI joints or something. My constant refused to acknowledge the possibility of SI joint problems. I ve now been referred to a neurologist as my orthopaedic specialist can’t understand the cause. I feel like one side of my back where the SI joint area is sticks out more. I run my hand where I feel most pain on the right and there’s a hard raised area that sticks out compared to the left side. That’s where the pain comes and goes. I m wondering why the MRI would not show that. Perhaps my orthopaedic consultant didn’t look at that area. He was certain it was my discs or facet joints but there was no sign of neural compression from the lumber spine. I have not seen a chiropractor.

  • @birdlynn417

This was perfect, doctor Pedersen. Thank you, so much for this thorough presentation about this matter of sciatica and SI joint dysfunction. You presented everything so well, with pictures, demonstrations, and clear and concise descriptions that I followed you along totally engaged 100%! Everything you described is what I have been living with for many years, especially these past two years. I have returned over 100 pair of shoes in two years, trying to get the right supportive fit for my dysfunctional right hip, low back and right ankle pain with flat feet. I have watched this video two times in a row, and plan on returning to it again and again taking in everything and hoping to get help with this. Where in Northern California is your practice? I want to say that you did an excellent job all the way around, and haven't met any other person or video that explained these things as you did, and I thank you! It makes sense, and takes away a lot of anxiety and fear about not knowing what is constantly going on, especially when the surgeons say that I am not surgical.

can confirm - spent years being mis-/cross-diagnosed for SI issues, piriformis, sciatica, until one day I went to get an MRI and it was a herniated disc at the root all along. All the other youtube videos tell you to clearly identify which issue you have, implying that being related issues is an impossibility.

      @lukaposeidon8490 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, Doctor Pedrsen That was super-informative and hopefully helpful, I’m. A semi truck driver fell of the truck 2 years back landed on my hip and arm, 8 months later I felt a pain behind my ear and 2 years later started my lower back pain for 2 continuous weeks and the 3rd week pain went down to my leg causing numbness in my left feet for 2 months , with X-ray report and MRI, result found 1. Left paracentral disc extrusion at L5-S1 resulting in mass effect on the
    left S1 nerve root.

Question: I have a problem with my Piriformis. No pain, just an uncomfortable annoying feeling in my right cheek down my leg, into my foot. I've never had shooting, sharp pains. Just a tickly feeling, makes me anxious at times. I'm seeing a chiropractor, next will be my 4th session. Using Pulsar, plus, manual Manipulation on the hips, breakaway table, and then an automatic roller that rolls from the sacral area to the shoulder neck area.
The first session was remarkable, Second not so much, my tingling increased. Will it take awhile to get this all in order?
You should be an instructor if not already.....Thanks for all the info....

Thank you so much for this video. I have watched many back pain related videos. But I can understand from this video some other important things caused back pain. I'm suffering from back from many years. It comes time to time. May be once a year or twice. When it happens I can't stand up and stay for few minutes. Can't move my hip and lower back. Pain though the right leg. Can bend for even small thing like wash hand. Cannot sit. When get out from the bed can't stand-up straight. Can't even change clothes on my own. Can't lift up a water bottle for drink water. As of this video I figured out that I have leg length issue. Coz I'm a soccer player and in 1997 done ligament surgery on my left leg. After that I played again and in 1999 other leg got injured. Same injury, same way. But didn't do surgery as it take time to recover and I stopped my soccer career. I'm in Australia. If you can refer the doctor or which type of practitioner I would see please help on that. Thank you

Thank you! I have been suffering for 2 years now with sciatica. I have have 3 different diagnosis, DDD, PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME and SI Dysfunction. I know it is not DDD, i have never had pain above my SI and spinal flexion does not trigger the pain. I have an appointment with my Chiro tomorrow, he tells me that it is locked up and releases it. This gives me immediate an immediate improvement in discomfort but not lasting. When it was at its worst that improvement my last 24 hours now its up to about 2 weeks. I am going to talk to him tomorrow.
To complicate things I have MS which has caused weakness and spasms on the opposite side of the pain. The pain is 95% triggered by my spasm, that is about every minute. The pain starts at the lower part of my SI and goes all the way into my ankle and toes. Wish me luck. If you read this and think of anything that could help I would very much appreciate it. I am in pain all the time from 5/10-10/10. It has me questioning my future existence ( i am working with a therapist) but to have this level of pain and MS doesn’t contribute to a life worth living. Hi Rob. I saw your user pic of a windsurf. I am a fellow windsurf. What a great sport.
I am glad you are working with your doctors. I think from what you described if you were in my office I would be looking for what can we do to balance out your muscles and help you find stability around your back and SI joints. Techniques like IASTM (Graston), FDM (Fascial Distortion Model), AK (Applied Kinesiology). I have patients with MS and I know how that can complicate things. But I find that if we get the tight muscles and fascia to calm down as much as possible, and if we get the inhibited and weak muscles strengthened we can usually get people some relief. Have you worked with a good physical therapist? I’d love to see what I could do to help you out if you live near the San Francisco Bay Area or if you are ever traveling out this way.
I am glad you are working with your doctors and a therapist. Chronic pain is such a physical and mental struggle. Hang in there. There are reasons you are alive and I will be praying for you. I hope you get feeling better soon! 🙏🏼

@@PositiveMotionChiro That is awesome that you are a fellow windsurfer, what a great sport, there is nothing like it🤙. Unfortunately this has sidelined me for a while. I sailed with the pain on a trip in the beginning of May but the MS and the sciatic pain really hindered my enjoyment. I have not attempted to sail since as it has been my #1 priority to fix this. I wish I lived in the Bay area for the sailing and the opportunity to work with someone like you. I went to my message therapist yesterday and begged him to help me. He is very knowledgeable and well regarded, he treats several NHL played as well as other top athletes. He was able to take me from a 7/10 pain to a 2/10 pain. I am trying to rest it now for a day or two ( please tell me if that is the wrong thing to do). Since his treatment i have definitely noticed a connection to my movements and the discomfort. Bending does trigger it now, driving always has. I was able to sleep well with a rolled towel under my lumbar and deep core engagement as I move definitely protects it. I have been trying to work my glutes and deep core connection and activation. I am excited to see such improvements but just not sure how to continue to progress it from here. Any suggestions would be great as i live in Niagara area of Canada and SF is a bit far for treatment. I would be willing to compensate you for your time. I find so many health professionals are less than adequate at what they do but a few stand out as really knowing there stuff and obviously you stood out as one of the later. Thank you 🙏!

      @PositiveMotionChiro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is great to hear that you had such relief from seeing your massage therapist. When someone’s pain can be so greatly improved by body work (massage, chiropractic, etc) that always gives me hope that there is a way to help the person have lasting improvement. Finding what creates that lasting balance is the hard part. Have you worked with a sports chiropractor? There is a directory at this website (www.acbsp.com). Sports chiropractors are used to working with athletes and working to find lasting balance to get people back to their sport. You are definitely an athlete as a windsurfer. Feel free to reach out to my office and we could set up a phone consult to chat more in depth (www.positivemotionhealth.com) Take care. 🤙🏼

Until I started using the belt daily getting out of bed was tremendously painful. It is getting better but still the most painful part of my day is the first moments of getting of bed are absolutely the worst, the next hour I just stand around until everything settles into my upright self and then I can begin my day. Thinking I will wear it to bed for a few nights and see if it can help me get out of bed without so much pain in the morning. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have had the worst, what I think is, piriformist pain that seem to brought on and has gotten worse with every pregnancy. My previous two pregnancies I went to the chiropractor weekly to try and help with my pain especially towards the end of my pregnancies. This pregnancy has to be by far the worst, I can barely walk due to the pain in my left leg and hip. I have been adjusted, while not as frequently as my other two pregnancies and have had no relief. Yes. I have 1/4" leg length inequality (X-ray and MRI). My Right leg is 1.4 shorter. I use a whole shoe sole insert, now-a-days. However, it never bothered me for many years except when I was walking sideways on an incline or uneven surfaces - like walking down a beach or side slanted highway. Now at age 72, I went to the insert, and I use the thumper massage gun on the P muscle when it gets tight. I've tried the Sacro Belt but it didn't help - that I could tell.

I am struggling with correct diagnosis aside from some lower back issues though nerve test does not show radiculopathy 😮 but I do feel ever since am injury 2 yrs ago my feet and lower extremity calf, ankle(one injury) tibial etc which I was diagnose may still be from piriformis muscle/sciatica etc. need a good chiro. Back surgeons, pcp, neurologist are not helping. Though some recent PT had helped it didn’t make it go away. They also used dry needling and not sure if that just irritated my muscles. I do have fibromyalgia…
I will purchase the belt though and see a foot Dr again this time get fitted for my own orthotics (I have flat feet) I’m sure that doesn’t help the tibial…thanks so much! God bless

Great teaching video Dr. Pedersen! I’d like to see one on lower body strength training that is less risky than holding heavy free weights, doing deadlifts, doing lunges, etc. For example, how risky is a heavy leg press with a machine?
I am scrawny, naturally weak (life-long, not just because I’m old now), and finally found magic in being able to do daily activities as well as normal people do once I started hitting lower body hard in the gym about six years ago. That is now gone for me per my medical professionals, but they didn’t give me anything new to add other than Pilates.

Resistance bands! Great for low impact legs and glutes. Ive been dealing with crippling sciatica off and on for about a decade. Recently discovered resistance band exercises for lower body, just gotta keep up with it because if your muscles cant hold up your body, leads to instability unevenness which can lead to pain.

I have sciatica since March when a chiropractress used an activator to adjust my leg length and shifted the whole static in my 62 year old pelvis! NEVER AGAIN! Since then I am desperately trying to re-adjust the bones and muscles with Rolfing, massage, acupuncture and exercise. Still not done and morphing pain in calf, buttock and both groins! Next thing is to try is Cranio Sacral therapy... wish me luck

Thank you so much for adressing the issue in medical health care, people need to become aware about the reason for treating symptom instead of cause is purily for profit. It is hard to make money from people who are treated and healed.. I'd call that the hippocritic oath. You are one of the exceptions obviously which took the oath of hippocrates. Respect, you are my master in this field. When you talk about causes of trauma at about 6 minutes into this video, I assume you mean acute fysical trauma, please correct me if you meant psycological trauma, which I believe people generally would interpret trauma as the latter.
