    For this video, we hop in this hilarious Volvo 240 that he loves to drift. One of the most fun I've had in a review in a long time and probably ruined everybody's day. It's no crazy supra, awd GTR, or anything nuts- just one of the most fun project cars. Thanks for watching!

    im from sweden ive seen a bunch of volvos with 300 000 miles PLUS. and yes it is true that volvo is the most common platforms for drifting and dragraceing. verry popular to put bmw engines in them but also LS and 2jz. this 240 your driveing got a b23 (hints 23 2,3L) but a b230 is a 2,3L but many of them got turbos stock and those are know to make 700hp there is a guy thats going for 900 wheel right now and that will be the record. But there is the volvo 850 T5 motor witch is front wheel drive but its known to make 1000+. And you can take the t5 engine and put in a 940.740,240. Becasue the t5 engine bolts right up with the 960 transmission (m90h transmission) and then you get rear wheel drive. the nice things about volvo everything bolts toghter with everything. KINDA like honda.

    Volvo is a great automotive innovator. One of, if not the first, car manufacturers to see the value in front and rear disc brakes. That's not to mention how readily available they are, and easy to upgrade. I think the 240 is one of the car communities most overlooked options, but anyone who owns a Volvo understands the quality and practicality of the car. For me it was love at first shift.

    You need to review a turbo 240. I know a guy who has a stock (looking) 240 that has a TD04 turbo that makes 330whp with 300,000 miles on it. Also, cut springs are definitely not causing the vibration.

    • @austinazcona700
      @austinazcona700 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joey Kissinger it's the toe rod angle and the slight misalignment. I had roll correctors to fix it but those are what actually caused the wheel to fall off on my trip. The correctors were putting such high stress loads that the bolts that held the strut to the ball joint snapped and sheared

    3:30 That is so true! Us Swedes modify Volvos for basically everything, rally, drifting, racing etc, the amount of modified Volvos here are ridiculous. The 240/740/940 is a great platform because they are REALLY easy to work on, and 940 turbos for an example, could easily push 250hp with some cheap supporting mods. Great beginner drift car :)
    Oh and you should really visit Gatebil this summer.

    a 240 volvo in good condition is another beast, it's a very predicative and comfortable car that is as fast or faster than many cars supposed to be "fast" cars on long trips

      Alexandre Gaumond They are great cars! Try to find one built after 87 at least (wiring was greatly improved, still not great tho :/) and get ready to do the rear bushings on the back axle if you want it to drive decently. There are guides online to build a bushing tool, it's an absolute pita though. When you first get it, do all the usual maintenance and make sure the pcv system isn't clogged. However, they are great cars. Mine is (kinda unfortunately) an auto but with redone suspension it feels great and the steering feel is phenomenal imo. Good luck!

    I'm from Sweden, and my father has always had Volvos my entire life. Started with volvo 140, then 240, a 360 even. And several 740is, then a 945 Turbo that I got when i turned 18. Now it just sits in his yard since he says its his. But I got my own 940 now that has around 200 HP. With turbo and i freaking love the car! It rattles a bit, smells a bit funky but shit. It's my car!

    My StepPopz had a 240 sedan when he and my Momz met, and it literally had just over 8oo,ooo MILES on it. He was a regional manager driving a full circuit over a third of North and ALL of South Carolina every week for close to 15 years, and that was his daily driver for every one of those years. when he finally sold it as a still fully running, fully functional car, it still had the original factory built driveline under it- engine, transmission, and rear end still worked almost good as new. Just goes to show how good Volvo's can be if you religiously follow the maintenance schedule

I also drove around without an alternator belt for a few days. No matter how many times it stalls out it just keeps running. Nothing can kill this thing.

    So he couldn't get the wheels balanced? Sacrificed the electric 5th gear to put on a custom knob that falls off? The 4 speed trans had been gone for ages before that year. I bet it still has 5th, but you just can't use it because there's no switch to engage it. Seems a lot of repairs or upgrades were just never finished and half assed. Why would he leave off the reverse lockout? It's attached by 2 bolts. Another sacrifice for the custom shifter no doubt. Doesn't run right? whatever happened to "stage 0"? The bumper isn't hard to bolt in either. Why would you use zip ties over wrenching about 4 bolts? All that effort in a diffuser, but not fix the brakes? The stock brakes are quite capable. 240s have 4 wheel disc. There shouldn't be an issue on the street...What a hack job. This car is an extension of laziness and ineptitude.

    Couple things on this review:
    1. The cut springs aren't causing a vibration, I had cut springs for a long time on my Volvo 240 and it rode fine, drove fine, and handled great with the proper strut housings and dampers. It was as low, or lower than this and had a lot more suspension travel left because I shortened the struts. Cutting springs on these cars is so common in the Volvo world that it's not even frowned upon when done properly.
    2. The 2.3 is a great engine with a ton of potential for performance. This thing probably makes much closer to the original power than you think. I dyno'd my NA 85' 240 and it still made 102 WHP at 260,000 miles. Pretty decent considering the 114 HP advertised stock is measured at the flywheel, and that my car sees the rev limiter A LOT.
    3. The brakes in a Volvo 240 are extremely great and better than most cars on the road when they're working properly.
    4. No offense to the owner, I love the car and follow him on Instagram, but this car seems very poorly put together and I see a huge lack of maintenance.
    5. You should review a well sorted Volvo 240 turbo that has upgraded suspension and a decent amount of power. Something low, poly-bushed, bigger sway bar(s), limited slip and a little more boost than stock would really surprise you.
    6. The car is a 4 speed yes, but it has and electronic overdrive that works as a 5th gear. I assume it doesn't function and wasn't fixed which backs up my statement about lack of maintenance and poor execution of what could've been a great car.

    • @austinazcona700
      @austinazcona700 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Lopina vibration is due to me taking off the roll correctors and the miss alignment when I did it in like 5 minutes. The overdrive works, he just reviewed the car on back roads and drove it spiritedly so no need for the overdrive. As for the brakes, this was before I switched to braided lines and the original hard lines were cracking, I fixed them before I drove down but I just let him know that he should watch out. It's was my daily so it was always being worked on and maintained it just doesn't look pretty

    • @maxlopina
      @maxlopina 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin Azcona the alignment shouldn't be affecting the shaking that much unless ball joints/tie rods are worn out. The wheels/tires are probably out of balance.

    Firstable, it is most likely 5spd(4 speed plus overdrive, and Volvo 240 is the only mass produced car with push button overdrive for fifth speed!), and if he did not tempered with a transmission, then find those wire pig tails from fifth speed(OD) is still there(most likely), and all "Phat dude in Blue" have to do is - put a cool none stick push button somewhere in dash or shifter(make it a trigger style) and you have 5th speed for a highway.
    Second it needs a cool big round rally style "Hella" light, that arranged in a trapeze formation on the grill of this car, it looks mean and awesome.
    Thank you for a review, I really enjoyed watching this cool project.

    I’m a huge fan of volvos (haven’t gotten to really get into the classics, the ones before the whole fwd i5 change) and feel in love when my dad sold our x5 to my grandparents and they gave him their 1999 Volvo S80 2.4. My grandparents are Dutch so it’s a eurospec car in America. When I drove it I was amazed at how comfortable it was on the bumpy roads of Texas but how flat it stayed in the corners. It’s powersteering also felt amazing, non of this electric power steering that out VW has or just simply overpowered like he caddy. Also anytime I have friends ride in it they always say how comfortable it is. It’s as old as they are but still rides better than the brand new cars they are getting. (I have the oldest car in the lot besides my friend in his 2002 bmw 325ci) I just marvel at how Volvo engineers their cars. I want to work at Volvo and become part of the safety engineers there. It’s funny how the 90’s car has the best audio system that I’ve ever heard in a car. I use an fm transmitter (because no aux) and it still sounds amazing. Sadly the s80 has lived most of its life on salty wet roads so things are wearing out. My grandparents also never did maintenance unless the dealer would pick up the car to do it. I love that car so much even tho it’s super slow with its 4000lbs and 140hp, and yet on a twisty backroad I’ve outrun my friend in his Beemer, hahahahaha. My family is keeping it till it dies or we have to move back to NL. If we have to get rid of it because we are moving I’m planning on leaving it with my bmw friend, he even offered to do that. It’s still my dad’s car right now but I’ve been fixing it up any way I can for being broke. My parents may get me a 2003 xc70 that we are looking at, but I’ll never let go of the s80 as long as I have a say in anything.

The quality is still great and still amazing video. just those subtle changes make more of a difference than i thought. id like to see what others think but thats just what ive noticed.
