  • Dr Magnifico discusses the dilemma Mounds faced when he blocked three times in a month and his dad ran out of money to continue treating him. Here are my tips for getting your cat out alive when you are financially constrained and you cannot afford the quote from the ER, or your vet. This is a life threatening condition and it should always be considered an emergency. But it doesn’t have to end in economic euthanasia. Ask for help for free at Pawbly.com.

I understand its a business, but vet care should not be as expensive as it is. A lot of us rescued, took cats out of a bad position as I did, tried to give them a better life but then can't always help them becuz its so unaffordable for a lot of people. Its sad.

What shouldn’t be so expensive is schooling to become a veterinarian. Most clinics are people who went to school and started their own business and now working their way out of debt. It’s understandable to want to help a pet, majority of people do. But if they do it once, that same person and whoever they tell is going to keep coming back and wanting more discounted or even free services. And that does not benefit a business to keep its doors open.

My cat is just about to die from blockage. It was $2300 to do it the first time. I have been giving him the food that was recommended. He has been drinking much more water. But for some reason he’s blocked again. Friends say it’s because he’s depressed or maybe it’s the litter. But I can’t pay that much again. Pains me to see him so uncomfortable

That's my story. I had to take my cat, a rescue, to the emergency vet because he had bladder crystals. they wouldn't let him in the door until i dropped at least 1k. Due to his treatment, medication and the nights he stayed at the hospital, i wound up spending 5,000. I get that it was an emergency vet and i should have chosen a better primary, but i can't help but feel kinda sour about everything. Nothing matters more than my cats health of course, but still...

I have 2 cats at age 8 & 9.5 yrs old. I don’t have cat insurance and don’t have enough savings for them. I am in constant worry. The 8 yr old male, have UTI issues few years back and he’s showing signs again recently. Since his diagnosis I have change his diet and give him a paste for preventative measures. Next week the older sister going to vets for suspected gingivitis … consultation fees starts @£45/- plus medications etc … not sure what I am looking at. I called reception for an estimate, they suggested talking to a vet…I decline…

All vets should offer payment plans. It's so awful that a pet parent needs to decide to allow their fur babies to get more sick, because they can't afford treatment.

This is exactly why it’s hard for me to trust Vets to care for my animals. They take advantage of the pain the owner is feeling to get every dime and when you can’t afford they cut you loose with no options. Finding good docs like Dr Krista who want to help is extremely difficult.

If you have this problem with your cat here is a good solution:
Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use at least two tablespoons in a day or if necessary a few days in an emergency for cats. For very young cats reduce that amount to one tablespoon. For kittens use only a teaspoon. Rub the organic apple cider vinegar on each side of their fur or the top of their paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. If you have a wild cat that doesn’t take orders, then douse him with a good bit in a small glass. A lot will bead of his fur. Also, they will not be able to lick off the entirety of it all at once. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. It saved my cat that was pissing blood and then could not pee while squatting all the time. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria; Walmart sells it. Ideally, it is best to use organic apple cider vinegar because it tastes rather good and is much more tolerable for the cat to ingest it compared to the filtered kind which tastes horrible.
Remember only to use the organic apple cider vinegar as necessary. Too much too often could lead to an ulcer. From my experience a couple tablespoons a week has not hurt my cat. If it is a real emergency you could go beyond that just do not let it come to a habit of more than that each week. Keep in mind; you will likely have reoccurring bouts with this for a while. That is why I recommend some other preventative measures as you read on below:
Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Ensure they eat wet cat food over dry for the moisture content, Consider temporarily stopping the cat from eating dry food or even permanently if necessary. Too much dry food leads to blockages with lack of hydration compared to canned cat food. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Salty meats or salty canned food meats like tuna will stop up your cat for sure!
If you use clay litter make sure you use the unscented. Scented can irritate their pee track with synthetic chemicals leading to inflammation and UTI blockages. Never use clumping litter for cats; it can lead to blockages because cats can ingest it much easier. That can cause ingestion of sludge and bacteria leading to inflammation and UTI’s. Clumping litter is known to be extremely dangerous for kittens and not good for cats in general. Buy only fragrant free non-clumping litter, and then add one heaping tablespoon of baking soda mixed in per 10 pounds of cat litter that you use. It will naturally neutralize the smell; Just do not go beyond that because baking soda is really high in salt which is dangerous for cats if they ingest it more than a tiny amount by licking their paws each time using the litter box. I have used it for my cat and it works well, he actually prefers this litter combination. Baking soda is known to help aid and help get rid of UTI’s. Never give it to your cat other than in the litter! Additionally, use feline pine litter and add it to your litter with several handfuls to add a nice fragrant smell. A little goes a long way to just supplement the litter.
Also, consider buying "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems. Put 1/4 teaspoon in two small cans of wet cat food or equivalent to that with one big can. You can also wash out an old salt and peppershaker to sprinkle a decent amount in their food. Any amount more than that I have noticed they will not eat it. Putting cranimals cranberry powder in their food will help keep their pee acidic to break down crystals.
Additionally, "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" helps assist in UTI treatment sold on Amazon. It is a "diuretic" thus helps people and animals urinate 30% more to empty the bladder to keep crystals from forming. Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Cats tolerate it because it has almost no taste. Just be careful not to breathe it in by getting it dusted up in the air because it is dangerous to breathe it in. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet cat food. Lastly, I have learned of a brand called "tinkle tonic" from chewy or amazon that some claim helped their cats.
Finally, consider your cat’s stress level. Stress could be another factor that can lead to inflammation of the bladder area. Try to ensure he has enough to do to keep happy.

I took my cat who was having trouble breething to the ER animal hospital in the middle of the night because he was in distress trying hard to breath. They examined my cat. He had pneumonia. My estimate for his 24 hour treatment would be $2,000. They wanted almost the full amount paid upfront before my cat would receive treatment from them.
Insane! They said his prognosis was good if he was treated, or I could have him euthanized. I was devastated and my cat was suffering, and so I paid them the money so they would care for him and treat him. Dealing with the ER animal hospital was the worst experience I've had in getting pet care for him. Trying to make the right decision was extremely stressful when it involved thousands on dollars. I felt they cared more about the money than they cared about my poor pet. I am not rich, just a middle class citizen who can't afford such extravagant prices for veterinary care.
I truly think ER animal hospitals take advantage of pet parents during a very emotional time when their pet is sick and suffering. They know their regular vet office is closed and have no other choice but to pay those high prices so their beloved pet will receive the care they need to save their lives. It's outrageous!

My little boy Milkshake was a resilient little guy. He was always friendly, he’d seak out attention, and he loved everyone. He showed so much strength even when he was in pain. We still aren’t sure how long he could have been blocked. There just weren’t any signs until it was too late. Shake would like to come use the restroom with me when I’d get home from work. He’d follow me around the house. He’d sleep near the window so he could sunbathe. I fed him Wednesday morning before work. That night my sister called me to say he seem sick, so I decided I’d check in him and take him to the vet the next day. The next day Thursday I got home and spent time with him. In those 6 hours he was having trouble using the rest room and he wants eating or drinking. I rushed him to the hospital as soon as I noticed. He was so weak I cried the entire ride to the ER. The team that helped us was amazing they jumped into action immediately and unblocked him. They explained all the concerns and statistics. They explained how common this happens and all of the possible causes. They gave him a fighting chance. The first 24 hours was definitely tough. I went to visit him every 8 hours. He had his favorite blanket with him. I’d sit there for an hour each time. I’d whisper to him about all the things we could do when we got home. The next morning we received somewhat good news from the hospital. They said his numbers were slowly dropping and that they weren’t giving up on him. But they also mentioned his potassium wasn’t moving and that it could mean kidney failure. 8 hours later I went to see my beautiful little boy shakes and he sat up to greet me for the first time in two days. He looked so healthy and ready to go home but flopped back down almost immediately after. The doctor came over to address the potassium levels again and said in the kindest way that he wasn’t going to make it without tremendous medical intervention. After that, I knew we weren’t going to be able to take my sweet boy home like I’d been whispering to him. I called my family and asked them to come see him because he wasn’t going to make it. They let us spend time with him in a comfort room. They disconnected all of the fluids and monitoring equipment. He had so much energy once he was out of the cage. it was almost like he was his normal cheerful self. He gave us hugs and kisses. It felt like he knew he only had so little time left and he wanted to spend it being happy. After about 45mins he became extremely tired and just wanted to lay down. We all knew the best thing for him was just to let him rest. It doesn’t make the decision any easier. Just watching him lay there we all knew he would have suffered more if we kept trying. We was such a good boy. No one prepares you for this. No one talks about dry food causing these complications. No one tells you to look for the signs. Please pay attention to your furry family members. They won’t speak up and they won’t let you know to check on them. I see so many good stories with happy endings, but I also see a lot of stories similar and worse than my own experience. Milkshake will always be with a bright light on my darkest days.
Now, im trying to morne the loss of my sweet boy, without holding guilt for not seeing the signs sooner. I wish you all the best and the same for your little buddies.

I am so, so, so sorry. I’m sitting here crying as I comment here. I lost my baby Tokey, many years ago, for the same reason. He had even gotten the surgery. But some cats just keep having issues once they start and it took its toll and he didn’t make it. I loved that cat more than any other cat in my lifetime. That was thirty six years ago. I still miss him. He was one of those rare ones. A really special cat. 😔
Don’t feel guilty. Even with proper and early intervention, it’s possible the outcome would be the same. He knew how much you loved him. ❤️

This just happened to my cat. They gave me a $1300 estimate. They ended up keeping my baby for over a week because it was so bad and he was in acute renal failure, but never went over the estimate they gave us. I barely had the money, that is all I had, but my baby is now home and doing well.
Another story, my Bernese Mountain Dog had a huge tumor the size of my head, they estimated us $6500 to take it out. We saved for a long time and used our taxes to do it. During the surgery the vet missed a 2 mm area and did not cauterize that area because they missed it. The next morning he was loosing so much blood he needed a transfusion and ultimately needed surgery again to fix his bleeding. While in surgery is when they realized they had missed the spot.
Long story short, before they took him back into surgery they emailed me another $4000 estimate and said we had to sign it or my baby would die. So of course we signed. But now we're stuck paying another $4000 when it was their mistake. I swear some vets care about nothing except money. 😒 it saddens me so much.

This is amazing!! My cat blocked and had rushed him to the ER vet, they unblocked him and kept him for 2 days and sent him home. Before they would even treat him I pad to pay almost 4,000 dollars! He came home and blocked again and I researched and found a cat specialist in my area who immediately said he needed the PU surgery. It has been 5 months since his surgery and my baby boy has more energy than he did when he was 1 and he just turned 5.

I had the BEST vet in the world when my very young stray cat that I adopted got blocked. I brought him to the vet, they got him into surgery right away. His bladder had ruptured, as well, so he had to have that fixed plus the block. He stayed there for about 3-4 nights being monitored. I brought him home, he did well for a little bit, and then blocked again. Repeat minus another bladder rupture.
My vet who did the surgery both times, DID NOT CHARGE ME for the second surgery, nor did he charge me for the hospitalization after that second surgery. Between both surgeries, anesthesia, hospitalization, the meds, the pain relievers, the muscle relaxants, the 3 urinalysis, the 2 blood tests, etc, it would have cost me around $5000. I did not have to pay $5000 because my vet actually cares about the animals.
He said to me, when calling me about my cat needing to go into surgery again, that I had 'spent enough money already' and he would not charge me except for the tests because those went to a lab and they had to be paid, plus the medications and other pills, which were not much. (Under $50.) That was it.
Not all vets are only in it only for the money, Search around. Those types of vets are rare, but they are out there.
My cat is doing really well. It has been almost 3 years since his ordeal. He will be on a prescription diet for life, but he's healthy, happy, and while it was costly, it was worth every single penny.

Yeah well it’s just really sad that you charge people a over thousand dollars to put a tube in their urethra and give fluids.. the mark up on these procedures is insane and WRONG in so many ways. What does a bag of saline and a plastic tube and bag cost you? Next to nothing. And they say they do it for the animals. 😒

I mean, veterinary school isn’t cheap and does have to be paid back sooo. I’m not saying it doesn’t suck, but there should be insurance options for animals. That’s not the veterinarians fault. And credit cards can come in handy for emergencies like this. If you have an animal, you know these things could arise and should have a back up payment for them, otherwise having them without being able to afford or have something to pay off(LIKE A CREDIT CARD) for basics or even emergencies is just ignorant.

DCgamer and vlogs Did you even bother reading my comment then since I stated there should be better insurance options for pets? I don’t need to do anything, I WORK in a veterinary office, I think that’s sufficient enough, but good shot 👍🏼 Cost depends where you go/live. The vet I work at, no SURGERY exceeds $350. Office visits are $30, wellness visits are $18. We are literally the cheapest vet in town with the most experienced veterinarian in the town. So it’s not like people are getting garbage work for the cheap cost either. Maybe the only one needing to do some research is yourself.

The homeopet feline uti is $17.99 at petco if you buy it in the store, but if you buy it online and do store pick up, it’s only $7. It has really good reviews on a number of different websites, and you can put it directly in their mouth, don’t have to get them to eat or drink anything.
Using that and also squirting water into his mouth with a syringe without a needle attached (slowly and only a little at a time, then let them swallow it) after 12 hours he finally became unblocked (red mucus plug discharged) and he’s now drinking water on his own, so I’m hopeful he’ll be ok…

Our furball Charles was about to turn 1 year old this month. On Saturday we noticed he was not moving around as much and he wasn't pooping or peeing, we thought he was just constipated so we gave him some cat lax and thought it would go away on it's own. The issue persisted to Sunday morning so we took him to the emergency vet. We were advised that he has a urinary obstruction, his abdomen was filled with fluid. They would need to drain the fluid with a catheter which would have been $4800 then afterwards if they determined that his bladder had been ruptured, they would need to perform surgery on his bladder which would be another $3500-4000. We were also told after taking these steps, the obstruction could recur. We could not afford the surgery for Charles and had to option but to have him put down. We walked out of the ER vet having paid $785, our kitty carrier empty. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

You're doing everything else right but you keep trusting the poisonous commercial food and that is the problem.
Get a can of salmon, wash out the brine mince it up and make a soup with some water. Add a cap of organic Bragg's apple cider vinegar and feed it to the cat at least three times a day. They may like sardines too. You can even add a bit of cranberry juice concentrate without any sugar, organic. It's supposed to help dissolve the crystals and Stones and is good for urinary health. The vet will not tell you this up front. You have to do a little digging and natural remedies. The best thing is to research raw diet and transition your cat to that. The commercial food causes a lot of sickness in these animals. Mostly because of the additives, chemicals and mystery ingredients that are not fit for human consumption. Cats are obligate carnivores, they need meat. Fresh meat organ and bone. They eat mice birds rabbits and reptiles in the in the wild. The closer you get to that the less their bodies will suffer trying to process unnatural food.

My poor boy was hospitalized for 4 days due to complete blockage. I wish it was $2000....I had to pay $6000. The vet also said it was a very difficult catheterization and it took 2 hours. I will consider PU surgery if he re-blocks. I feel so fortunate to have the money to do this because otherwise I understand completely why for some people euthanasia would be a considerable option. So sad...

Please people stop this suffering! I have worked for two vets and sometimes I am appalled at their suggestions. Everything is steered now towards pushing people to get insurance for their pets. We are all in a testing phase right now. Personally from my experience if the cat is that sick, you have to stop the suffering immediately by putting it down not prolonging what the majority of vets know it’s going to end up happening. They milk you, get it. It’s the same thing that happened with the medical industry. It’s sick.

I am here because my cat had this problem last week. The ER I took him to was a 24 hour hospital so luckily he was able to get care, round the clock. But the bill was $3,700 UPFRONT. The only reason I had the money for this out of pocket was because I am a student and I took out a loan last year and luckily I saved a lot of it because I had plans to pay it back into the loan or save it for emergencies. Which is exactly what it was used for in this case. The ER told me that if I didn't have the money he would have to be euthanized. A pet is not just a pet. Their life should not come down to a number of what someone can or can not pay. I live in the US. Is anyone from another country here, that has had this experience? What was your experience like? Is there health coverage for pets? Do you get to pay overtime? I'm just curious. But its just so sad that this happens imo.

My cat got blocked at the start of October, went to the ER, the catheter, fluids, and two day overnight stay ended up under $3,000. I live in the U.S., but I know that there are pet insurances available. Talk with your vet, and see what they accept. There are also loans, which is what I used to get my cat treated. I didn't have to pay on the spot, I'm paying it off with monthly payments. I hope this information is useful, nobody told me about pet insurances or loans the first time my cat had an emergency. My best advice, is to talk to your vet and see what kind of options they have or accept.

Had a cat block week before Easter. Took to our vet first, they said he wasn't fully blocked but pee tests are very bad to watch him. The next day he was def blocked and in pain. Took to our very good ER vet in the next town and they unblocked and kept him there for 3 days constant monitoring. I was worried he'd block again because the following week he was peeing on the floor, but he was on his 2nd week of Hill Pres C/D food all wet and I got a Britta water filter for his water bowels and everything came together. Took about a month for his 100% turn around but he's back to being the little rascal he always was. All in all I spent about $3500 between the vet and ERvet. Very expensive and if he kept blocking and constant ER vet visits he'd have to be put down I just don't have that kinda cash. I was lucky to have this. I feel the pain of every Cat Ma/Pa that's going through this. It's heart wrenching and stressful. Best of luck.

I'm in the middle of a similar situation, having taken my cat in to the vet Friday because she was having difficulty urinating (like not at all). Her bladder was full and discolored. After a urinalysis was performed, they found no bacteria, but somewhat elevated WBC. They sent the sample out to do a more extensive urinalysis (???) Same finding. After 4 days, I'm finally getting Gabapentin to help and Buprenorphine. Its now 6 days after initial onset and she can barely urinate. They never checked for crystals, never suggested a catheter, nothing. I can't imagine the pain she is in. Before this clinic was bought by a corporation, the vet that owned the business would have assessed and treated already. Thank you for the video and ideas I'll present to the vet this afternoon.

They did check for crystals and found some. Today X-rays shows something in her bladder. Hoping to rule out bladder cancer - she's only 8 years old - pulled more urine to send off for cytology. This will take 5 days. I insisted on adding onsior after labs showed kidneys are fine. But vet was reluctant as now she's on a lot of pain meds. Bottomline is she's barely urinating due to inflammation and blockage. It's heart breaking as the vet is out of ideas on what else she can do.

Each time it cost us 2000+ and now they quote us other 4000-6000 for PU surgery . We decided if he got block again we would have to let him go. Can afford $10000 while having là real children to take care of. Vet shouldn’t be this crazy expensive and we have to choose between real children or animals.

My female cat is having trouble urinating...it hurts me to see her squat over the litter box and nothing come out...I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics first to see if it will help. $160. Other treatments and tests were gonna run me close to $600 and that’s just tests not even treatment....why does vet care have to be so expensive? What’s worse, my other cat had be diagnosed with glaucoma and he’s on prescription eye drops...that was literally a week ago and his treatment already cost me $600+ dollars. Both my cats are old, 15+ years so I don’t know what to do? I feel like at this age everything is going to start deteriorating but I don’t want to think about the possibility of putting them to sleep because of money...I’ve had them half my life :(
Male cat is so far doing better with his eye...it doesn’t hurt him anymore but he is partially blind. The female cat, we have to wait and see if she responds to the antibiotics and special food for urinary health. She goes back in a week for check up....I just feel so incredibly sad and depressed about their health.

Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use one to two tablespoons a day for a few days rubbing it on each side of their fur or paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. It saved my cat that was pissing blood and then could not pee while squatting all the time. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria; Walmart sells it. Additionally, "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" helps get rid of UTI's over time sold on Amazon. It is a "diuretic" thus helps people and animals urinate 30% more to empty the bladder . Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Cat's tolerate it because it has almost no taste. Just be careful not to breath it in by getting it dusted up in the air. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet catfood. If you use clay litter make sure you use the unscented. Scented can irritate their pee track with synthetic chemicals leading to inflammation and UTI blockages. Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Also, buy "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems.
Please consider natural options and research raw diet for cats. This drama and pain keeps on replaying because people are blindly feeding their cats poisonous commercial food and going to the vet's who only treat symptoms and not root causes while draining your wallet.

WHAT MY STORY IS: My male cat got blocked almost a year ago and this is what we did. We got him a procedure to unblock his bladder and hospitalized him overnight, and then he went to get a PU surgery the next morning. When he returned there was medicine for him to take at specific parts of the day and I was always fixated on that. I monitored everything he did, ate, and drank.
TH-cam VIDS ON BLOCKED CATS: Yes, TH-cam strategies can be helpful but you should NEVER. EVER. Withhold taking your cat to the vet if they are showing signs of being blocked. It’s a matter of life and death; don’t rely on TH-cam videos.
WHAT CAUSES BLADDER BLOCKAGE?: Stress that causes stones, urinary crystals, and inflammatory plugs. (In my situation we believe the flap door to the garage where the litter boxes was is what was causing him to be stresses AKA not being able to get to the litter box.)
WHAT ARE SIGNS OF BLOCKING?: Not being able to pee or, attempting to pee on random objects, crying while urinating, blood in urine, loss of appetite, urinating outside of litter box.
I fully recommend using more liquid based cat foods, cutting off tap water from your cats diet and replacing it with cat water, keeping the litter box clean. Keeping the litter box clean is really important because cats are clean animals. When you go to a public restroom with stalls if you walk in and see poop and pee we will probably want to go to a clean stall, this is like cats skipping over a dirty litter box. Hope this helps COMMENT BACK IF I MISSED ANYTHING!

Make sure you do not use "filtered or reverse osmosis water"with ADDED MINERALS to make it more alkaline.this can cause a blockage. Also NO DRY FOOD.EVER. that is the most important thing, that is what causes blockages.even the"precription"(hills, etc.)urinary formulas-NO DRY FOOD.
Also, make sure they do not get dehydrated, keep them inside in a cool place when it is hot out. If your cat is panting,he is overheated, and in danger of getting dehydrated.
Even Mild Dehydration can lead to blockages, the minerals that cause blockages are concentrated, and they are not getting enough liquid to keep them flushing them out.
Most cats need to LEARN /Be taught to drink water,it is not a natural thing for them to drink water, even if they are overheated/ dehydrated /near death.

Thank you very much for your advice. I live in Thailand in a small town north of Chiang Mai. Our nearest competent veternary clinic is 100 km away. I hac\ve six cats and not a car so it is a real logistic drama when one of them falls ill. Your videos and advice help me so much in arming my brain to ask the right question when I take one of the cats for treatment. There is so much false info out there.

If you continue to have problems do this, but be ready especially with the Organic Apple cider vinegar.
Ensure they eat wet cat food over dry for the moisture content. Too much dry food can lead to blockages with lack of hydration compared to canned cat food. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Also, buy "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems. Put 1/4 teaspoon in two small cans of wet cat food or equivalent to that with one big can. You can also wash out an old salt and pepper shaker to sprinkle a decent amount in their food. Any amount more than that I have noticed they will not eat it. Lastly, I have learned of a brand called "tinkle tonic" from chewy or amazon may help reduce the inflammation that leads to this problem.

This just happened to us. We took our kitten to the vet (different one than we took our old pup too before she passed). They unblocked him, gave him fluids and a cath. They were going to keep him overnight despite not being 24h but before they closed, they recommended us taking him to a 24h clinic across town to be monitored because he pulled his cath out twice they said. Had to pay $1500 to get him out.
We drove him 45 mins to the other vet with his cath and fluids and had to pay $408.
They called the next day for more money, we couldn’t afford it. I told him I work in urology and asked if I can have him back with his fluids and cath so I can take him to the other vet. They just kept asking if I wanted to continue care, we obviously couldn’t figure out how to get more money as we already maxed out our care credit when our dog passed and our families already put money together for the initial payment. They pulled everything out. He had his cath and fluids for approximately 52hrs, but they never told me what time they pulled him off everything, nor did they tell me what signs to be looking for if he’s doing ok or declining.
He’s been ok now, I’ve been monitoring him for over a two weeks now. He has his meds, an appetite, drinks water, and has completely switched over to prescription food. It’s been stressful and honestly am very disappointed in his care. I won’t feel out of the water for a good 3 months which the 3rd vet told me is how long prescription food can take to kick in fully. His labs at the 3rd vet when I took him for a check up 4 days after returning home did come back with small traces of struvite crystals but were not alarming amounts for the vet to be concerned. I still have anxiety about it though and it was definitely not an expense that wouldn’t affect our financial wellbeing as college students.

I've been in the blockage situation several times with my 2 Male cats. (One of them is no longer with us...he died due to complication of Saddle Thrombus)
But with my other Male cat, Spot, it happened so suddenly. He was, at the time, almost 10 years old. He has always been an indoor cat and was intact (I get enough guff for this alone) and I took him and his brother to a very inexpensive clinic that is well known in our area for charity work. (They even have one day a year where they will spay/neuter for free.) I left my cats with them and within 10 minutes I got a call from them telling me that Spot was lethargic and his head was drooping. I rushed back to the vet and the doctor came out to talk to me. He told me that Spot was blocked, that he had tried to unblock him and start a cath but was unable to. He said "I'm pretty good at unblocking them, but this one is tough. He needs an emergency room."
I rushed him to the ER which happens to be my PCP. They unblocked him and started a cath. His levels weren't looking good, they briefly mention that he has some fluid, possibly urine, outside of his bladder, and he would need to stay with them for awhile. They called me every morning to update me and he was doing good for a few days and they were ready to pull the cath and see how he did. He blocked again within 24 hours. They tell me that a PU surgery may become necessary. They pull his catheter and observe him for 24 hours. He isnt peeing. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. I cant tell you how many times they pulled the catheter thinking he would pee on his own. They tell me it's time for a PU. So I tell them to go ahead. I cannot afford it but I started selling everything I could on Ebay and borrowing from everyone.
After the PU our hope's are high. But something is wrong. Hes still not peeing. They dont know why. They call in the owner and most experienced vet. He opts for exploratory surgery, for which I will not be charged. They go in and discover that there is a small tear in his urethra. The tear would heal when the catheter was in, they would pull the catheter and the tear would reopen. Every. Single. Time. The fluid they saw on the first day was urine that was leaking through the tear. They believe, and I believe, that although VERY WELL INTENTIONED, the charity vet, in his haste to HELP my cat, may have ACCIDENTALLY caused the tear in Spots urethra.
They decide that we are going to leave the catheter in for 7-10 days to allow the tear to heal and then pull the catheter. We just just that and he healed up wonderfully and came home.
He has had a couple issues since then, like a UTI and he is on very expensive urinary food. I have to watch his diet carefully because even 2 days without that food and he can block again.
    Continued in comments.

Blackies story is longer and sadder.

The frustrating dilemma you just described happened to my cat, George, over the weekend (3/27/21 - 3/30/21. The ER vet clinic inserted a catheter on Sunday at 3am, but had such difficulty bc of the inflammation, mucous, crystals etc ...and bc the catheter getting kinked. They removed it and reinserted a new one one at 3pm on Sunday wherein George was able to release his urine. He would've died in within approximately 8 hrs had i not brought him in. I was told the catheter needed to stay in for a minimum of 24 hrs. ...BUT!!! instead they called me at 10am Monday to say he was being discharged. This, obviously, was not what the previous vet advised. 😑 I was given pain meds, muscle relaxers, and a medication to help improve his bladder wall. That night George slept for a solid 7 hours without moving - as he was exhausted. And guess what? On Tuesday he strained to urinate again bc of the inflammation and could not produce any urine. He was vocal and in pain. I called my primary and I was directed to return to the ER. They did reinsert a catheter, but suppressed his bladder to remove most of the urine. This time they gave me another medication for the inflammation. It is now Wednesday, and George can still barely pee. After talking to George's primary vet, I'm taking him in tomorrow morning so that I can actually go inside and learn how to suppress the bladder and receive more personal, caring treatment. That said, I'm now out $3500 with an ongoing problem for George. I'll ask my vet if they will let him come home with a catheter for a few days. But I'm very frustrated by this outcome and the exorbitant cost!! That $ was earmarked to fix my car...but George's life will always come first 🐈 Sigh...😕...

@@Binoculars-ot6xu Hey! Thank so much for the information. 👍 I'll look into the pine kitty litter and ask his primary vet about trying organic acv. Today, he had PU surgery to remove the end of his penis (sorry, George) to help prevent future blockages since his body has a predisposition to form struvite (sp?) crystals. I'm also changing his diet to medical grade food which dissolves said crystals. But after this surgery, he will be more vulnerable to UTI's.

This has been a real problem for us and our five year old cat who suddenly blocked when we turned him from an indoor/outdoor cat to a purely indoor cat. We did all the right things (he spent most of his time indoors anyway, we have 4 litter trays and one other cat, all trays are large and 2 inches deep and cleaned twice daily and dumped and thoroughly cleaned weekly, they're all in social areas, there's plenty of toys and climbing areas and poles, they have a water fountain, and eat high quality royal canin wet food - we do EVERYTHING right).
So anyway he blocked suddenly and we took him to a vet and it cost $1k to unblock him and send him home. The reason they sent him home with us is because they said although he needed to urinate it wasn't too bad yet and although he had crystals in his urine the blockage was very small and just mucus.
36 hours later we saw him struggling to urinate for the first time and took him back to the vet, which cost another $2k, to unblock him but keep him overnight this time. This time his bladder was full, and he was obstructed, and they ran a whole suite of other tests looking for pinched nerves and stuff and found nothing. It seems purely stress related.
So he came home again and we took him back to the vet in the morning (more stress for everyone involved) and they confirmed although he peed last night he was holding in his pee again, but they were able to express it without putting a catheter in, so $105 and we're out the door.
I know vets cost a lot but they also have a lot of costs and so it's not ridiculous. Also I love my cat more than anything and am happy to pay to help him. But at $3k/week (or even $730/week if we go every day and they can express him without a catheter like today) I can see that this would bankrupt a lot of people (including myself) very quickly if it continues.
I'm sure I'll be back there tomorrow or the day after.
Yes we have multiple kinds of tray in multiple places and with multiple litters. The only thing we twigged on last night was that he sniffed all four trays then walked away, possibly because he smelt our other cat on them (who loves to use all of the trays). Now we're trying to keep two trays separate from that cat so our sick boy can use them solely but watching trays 24/7 is hard work, and even the littlest bit of pee might turn him away (if it's the cause) and destroy all of our good work.
It's hard. And the emotional toll on him (and us) is devastating. I can only imagine those other cats with real problems like actual crystals.

I’ve had two cats do this, one is at the vet for it now. The first one, he blocked twice, and in between, he was always miserable. After the second time, I got him the PU, and after that, he was a different cat. Much happier, and lived until almost 18 years old. This one, I’ll watch and see how he does before that decision, since it is on the pricy side.

Just dealt with this last night. My 8 yo baby boy has been picture perfect health till then. They even said very healthy minus the crystals. We bought a cheap food last wk to get by till pay day. Big mistake.
I had to drive an hr away to Purdue University Vet Hospital. My options were euthanize him, pay $450 for the unblocking then discharge & see our vet today, or starting rate of $2k to unblock him & keep him there on catheter and iv for 3 days. They offered a $4k surgery to widen him as well.
His urine wasnt even bloody yet. Unblocked and he saw our holistic vet today. Our vet put him on a natural medicine, yanked him off the Gabapentin bc it causes kidney problems, recommended an affordable canned food with ph balance & low magnesium, a supplement for bladder health, and told us to get a water fountain & cat water. He recommended a pheremone diffuser to help keep him relaxed.
He is doing good so far.
No issues until we bought Friskies dry food. Cant prove it, but enough of a correlation for me to never buy cheap or dry food again.

If it ever was to happen again this is what I did for my cat:

You gotta watch the dry food. Some OTC dry foods are fine, avoid cheap foods like the plague. If you are having trouble affording Purina One or any of the high end urinary tract formulas, the best cheap food bet is the 9 Lives Plus Care. Do NOT get the 9 Lives Daily Essentials. Do not get the Dollar General or Sav-A-Lot, or any cheap store brand. Even some of the high end cat foods may cause problems. Wet food is better, but some cats won’t touch it. Also, track down what company makes which food. Purina makes many different brands, from Friskies to Kit and Kaboodle, and not all of them are the same. My cats absolutely hate Iams and Hills, it’s a waste to even spend that much money on it.

      K. Beautiful Powell because they care more about money. Someone’s cat in a different country had the PU surgery for only $100 +$300 for all the other stuff. It cost $2,500 for my cat here in the U.S. This pisses me off because it only shows that it does NOT have to be so expensive. I’m just so upset because I spent all that money for my cat’s surgery. Over a year later, I see him going to the litter box frequently now. If I paid so much money for his surgery only for him to be blocked again, I’m going to lose it. His bladder doesn’t feel full, so I’m monitoring him tonight and tomorrow to see if he CAN pee, but is only having like, urethra spasms or something. This is so upsetting. It doesn’t help that he’s extremely picky and doesn’t drink as much water as he should, whether I have a fountain, add water to his food, etc.

@@hennamcswag I live in New Jersey and they charged me $3500. I had no choice because it was Sunday morning at 3AM and no other place around. My boyfriend's friend came in 10 minutes after we called him from the ER animal hospital and put the whole amount on his credit card. The choice was either $3500 or euthanasia.
Vet school costs are disgusting but i think the government needs to intervene and cap costs. Of course it doesnt help that the hospital ER that i went to is in a very rich area of New Jersey.

My cat goblin was blocked and I took him to the vet and they quoted the surgery at 3700 dollars Canadian. I asked us there anything else I could possibly do and they said that putting him down was the only other option. So in the end I made the decision to put him down because I trusted the vets opinion. Now I've lost my best friend in the whole world and I'm filled with complete regret.

I'm from India. Had a 4months old skinny male kitten (rescued) who started peeing just 1 drop every 5 minutes. There are no emergency medical vet services where I live. Saw your video, located his bladder, gave him a massage, gave him some antibiotics and a steroid. He improved after 3 days and is totally fine now. Thank you.
