N64 Games That Aged BEAUTIFULLY

  • Even though the sales for the console never quite matched what Nintendo have reached with the Switch, it’s hard to argue with the claim that the N64 is Ninty’s most iconic console. It’s also responsible for your mum calling every console you own a “Nintendo”, but that’s another story. While a lot of the library of games is considerably dated by this point, there’s a select few on the N64 that have seemed to defy the ravages of time, and also early 3D game development.

      My first system was an NES, which an older sibling purchased. My parents called it a Nintendo. Then they continued w/ Super Nintendo and N64, which came out when I was about 13.
      When the GameCube came out, I purchased it an played it, but by that time, it was no longer a family affair. I'm not even sure my parents even know that I purchased one, or a PS2, or my Xbox.
      They just lost awareness by that point.
      I loved the GameCube, but I think that N64 was almost like art. Pilotwings 64 was one of the first two games, and it's basically just a soothing art piece. Those weird experiences were never replicated by other systems

    Rogue Squadron also had one of the best easter eggs ever. They completely hid the Naboo Starfighter as a cheat code fighter, and dropped the code to unlock it as part of the movie promo.

      I remember that, long after completely finishing the game they revealed codes for hidden ships and that gave the game some new life. One of the keys to enjoying an N64 game is to use a controller which has a control stick that's in good condition, and many games work best with the original type of controller control stick, which is actually significantly more precise than modern control sticks, believe it or not. Part of the issue is that more modern style control sticks will often just feel too sensitive as well, where you don't have enough control to make fine adjustments in some games.
    You can buy replacement parts for your original OEM controllers. It can take a bit of work to get them installed, and you might need to sand away some mold lines, but once you get it working well it can be a huge improvement.

    • @wiremesh2
      @wiremesh2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The difference between playing Ocarina's shooting gallery games on OG hardware vs emulation illustrates this very well. It's so much better on the N64 controller.

    • @PokePika01
      @PokePika01 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I find the reason for this personally fascinating! The N64 stick technically output values in a range of -128 to 128 same as modern sticks, but the hexagonal gate limited the actual range to about 81 in either direction, which developers were aware of and programmed around. Thus the expected max range comes at about 60%. Most modern emulators will automatically correct for this, or allow you to adjust the correction ratio. The NSO N64 controller actually outputs in the correct range, which is why it feels so good in its intended use case.

Most of my classic systems look fine on a newer flat screen TV, but the 64 really suffers when played on a modern TV. I just got a Sony CRT and it's an amazing improvement. It just sucks that CRTs are so heavy, but they are easy to find and in most cases free.

    Compared to the PS1, most N64 games have aged greatly. The lack of CDs prevented the size of games could get and could't have cut scenes, but one thing the N64 had is that it was a 3D graphic machine. Perfect at the time it came out to show what could be done with 3D games. Now thew main issue with todays gaming is the lack of compatibility with HD televisions.

    Another game I do still go back and play and I think aged well is Mischief Makers. It focused on being a good 2D platformer with some 3D and effects that took advantage of the N64 hardware. The controls are pretty good too. It's a pretty odd game and maybe not for anyone, but I think it feels just as good to play today as it does then because of its focus on a good 2D game that is enhanced with some 3D, rather than 3D were held back by the limitations of the hardware like a lot of N64 games that didn't age as well.

    It is a cardinal sin to skip or dismiss the Wiiu partially or entirely ; I did not own one as a late twenties/early thirties biological male but I did get a chance to try it out a few years ago. It was a big improvement over the Wii and the Switch has yet to replicate it in my opinion; my excuse for not owning one was the fact that my buddies owned a Sony PS3 so I had to own one as well (to compete in online EA Sports FIFA servers). The Wiiu deserved more love and support than it initially got and received years later; again, my issues were that the selection of sports titles were a bit more robust on the other console devices and the Saint's Row 2 and GTA 4/Episodes from LC were sadly not ported to Nintendo WiiU's hybrid home or office console device (for some odd reason).

    Mario Party 1 was an analog stick killer, though. If you're playing on original hardware and don't want to deal with part wear, I'd stay away from it.

    The only part that i disagree, is about Mario Party. MP3 has aged very well, and i still play it with friends to this day, but mario party 1 and 2 didn't aged well because of the controller destroying minigames, specialy nowadays that n64 aren't easy to find.

    This list was definitely needed, because the N64 is a console that benefits heavily from nostalgia goggles and those who don't have fond memories of the console will point out its graphical shortcomings. But that generation was uncharted territory for the industry and those graphics were revolutionary at the time.

      @@tornoofo17 of course, but 16 bit systems with 2D sprites get a pass because that retro aesthetic is pleasing and 2D pixel art has made a resurgence in recent years. Majority of people do not find PS1/N64 3D graphics all that appealing today

      @@InfiltrateIndustries I have to strongly disagree. When I was in 3rd grade Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 were the best looking games at the time and really pushed the limits of what we thought was possible for video game graphics. Being able to explore a fully 3D environment without much lag was amazing
