Awesome video thanks for this. I have a 1987 John Deere 420 garden tractor that the Hydro is surging in other words with all the linkage stationary the tractor speeds up and slows down almost like it’s starting for fluid. I’ve changed filter and the fluid and nothing has helped so far. Any thoughts?
I have a 318 that runs forward but not backwards. One check valve does not move freely so I’ve ordered a new one to see if that is the issue of NO REVERSE? Hope so as JD folks suggest that it may be the Transaxle ? Please advise or respond if you still maintain this TH-cam video series. Thanks
I’m still here. While you are waiting for your new check valve you could remove the stuck check valve and see if you can pry it up with a brass tip or even a screw driver if you don’t mind messing it up.
I doubt there would be enough flow to handle both the front and read axle and regulating the flow would be a challenge. It would be easier and most likely cheaper - unless you are really good at hydraulics - to find a K90 or 92 with 4wd and mount it under the model in question. That option would only require fabrication.
Had had the same thing happen to me. I bought a 420 that have been repowered and someone had lengthen or had shortened the drive shaft it was neither straight or balanced. Ended up ruining the pump and the input shaft on the transmission had to buy a used unit off of eBay. Just replaced the entire transmission and driveshaft.
Awesome videos! Thank you!

Thanks for great video! How do you replace input shaft. My splines on shaft are trash.
Lots there I never knew, Thanks for explaining it ! Amazing the bad driveshaft did all that..
It's a wonder you don't see more damaged pumps out there since a lot of brands used non-greasable driveshafts.
or zerks you cant ever seem to get grease into !

Does the direction of the engines spin affect how the pump would operate?
The pump would not operate properly in the reverse direction.
Is the small gear with the pin in it supposed to be tight or should it be able rotate a little
The fluid changing direction, is that forward and reverse?
Yes
Would it be possible to port the valve block to run to additional lines to run a front axle

Did you do a video on taking out the rear seal for the pto bc mine is leaking and want to see more to take apart thanks
