I don’t share Randy’s politics, but he remains one of my favourite songwriters and composers. I love his more introspective lyrics, some of the most heart-wrenching and funny stuff you’ll ever hear. He’s a great storyteller and master of the character study. A national treasure who deserves every accolade and more. As for the book title, fair enough. Randy is passionate about his politics. But for me, his music transcends his politics.
"Randy Newman at The Odeon" is one of my favorite DVDs. Ry Cooder and Linda Ronstadt alongside on some songs. By himself, Randy makes me laugh on some songs and gives me chills on others. Great camera and audio work.
One of America's greatest songwriters. When the writer Marcus Griel wanted to pick 4 Great American musical artists who speak to the mythic America in his fabulos book "Mystery Train", he choose Bob Dylan and the Band, Robert Johnson, Elvis Presley and Randy Newman.
I agree that Hearts and Angels stands up well against the classic albums of Sail Away and Good Old Boys. It sounds as if I should get Dark Matter as well as this biography. I remember Randy Newman being interviewed on (UK BBC2?) TV in the 1970s around the time of Good Old Boys. He was very open about what motivated him to write new songs etc. It's a pity I can't find that interview any where on the InterNet.
A real Genius of songwriting, Randy Newman. I think where he came out of was actually more traditional pre-ROCK musically with his background but he was the same generation as the greatest Rock and Folk songwriters so he did go into the music biz of the era . My favorite album may be TROUBLE IN PARADISE which includes I LOVE L.A.. One of his best songs is DIXIE FLYER…probably his most auto-biographical and of course he has the ability to write film scores in the traditional sense. On his politics, well he grew up and lived in the uber liberal enclave of West Los Angles what do you expect.
Time for him to rework 'short people' as 'short attention span people'

"Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father" brings me to tears every time. 😢

I look forward to reading it. Alternative title - 'Isn't It Ironic?'

'If think where'?
If you think...
I think...
more traditional pre-rock with his background?
@ noted…corrected
One of the great song writer's.with the unfortunate singing voice.
Nice to see Trump Derangement Syndrome is strong with ol' Randy, as well.
Musicians tend to be opposed to Fascism-Authoritarianism, and people like Trump!
