Worst thing about the MacBook Pro is that the BIOS (or rather Mac-equivalent) is stored on the NAND chip and so if, for whatever reason your SSD dies, the whole laptop is essentially bricked; you're unable to boot it using an external drive. Remember to regularly back your stuff up people!
I fully agree on the screen space! My biggest sacrifice to shift to Mac was losing the real estate. I could sense the difference between the 13.3” Mac & 14” PC. It was worth it though as the build quality is so much better!

Got it for a good deal and managed to save £300 off the RRP and got another £60 off since the AppleCare purchase period had expired.
Hey that's my MacBook Pro of choice as well. I love the 14inch MBP M3 and I chose the profitability factor because I usually just use mainly for work/travel because I already have a Mac Mini M2 for main home office.
I love my 16” m2 pro, it’s like a desktop replacement. I set on a chair most of the time in the office so I don’t want to be tied to another desk at home.
I’ve been using an iPad since Gen 1. When external keyboards became available I went that route. My current iPad Pro has the Apple keyboard which I do not care for. Right now, it is disengaged and I’m back on typing on my screen. The last few days I have been seriously considering my next iPad will be a MacBook Pro. Your videos are helping me decide which one I should get. I’d love to get an M3 in an Orange MacBook G3 case (with a 14” screen, of course).
The only issue I have is the slight backlight leak around the key edges, but otherwise, completely agree, and one of the best products I've ever bought.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Japan @lukemiani ! It's already been a few months and you're since left but a belated "welcome to Japan!" What hotel did you stay in in Hokkaido? It looked beautiful? As for the topic - I've been using a 15" for decades (my first mac laptop was the first Intel Core 17" - really nice laptop in it's day). While the 14" is more transportable, I still think the 15" overall wins. More space (I'm a software developer) matters a lot. When it comes to using a plane, I usually end up either using an iPad or trying to sleep (as work is busy once you land!) All the best from Japan!

Holy crap! That's silver dream you went down at 10:17! That's the run I also used when learning how to ski. Awesome stuff.
The 14" makes the most sense. The dilemma for me is I am upgrading from a 15" MacBook Pro, which is perfect for me personally. If I purchase the 14" I'm going to feel like I am losing some of what am used to, and enjoy, but if I go 16" I am going to love having that extra size, but at times it might be less practical.
To answer the question at the end of the video, yes I will and I have taken my 16 inch M3 Pro MBP on a Personal and Business trip to Atlanta this past January. While it is big, I am a person that needs the bigger real estate screen for when I am working on Contracts and listings and then when I am video editing or creating music in my off time.
I am finally planning on buying my first ever MacBook Pro (the 14" M3 Pro) here in about 5 months. I have seen & held the 14" in my hands a couple of times & it just feels so right & good in my hand & unlike the 15" MacBook Air, I didn't think or feel like I would inadvertently break the hinges just opening & closing the MacBook Pro 14" & I like the thicker chassis (It's not like you're carrying or holding a brick unlike PC's.) For a on the go computer, I 100% agree that the 14" MBP is the way to go.
I’ve already made up my mind that a 14 inch MacBook Pro is what I’m getting and I’m hoping to get it very soon as long as I trade in my mid 2020 Intel MacBook Pro and pay it off in 12 months. This video just gives me more of reason why choosing the 14 inch MacBook Pro.
Having had a 15” Intel mbp, 16” M1 Max mbp, and now a 14” m3 pro….I have to agree with you. I think the lightness and easier portability outweigh (no pun) the benefits of the 16”.
I grabbed this model, had a 16” M1 Pro in the past, and much prefer this size. I can get almost 3 8 hour work days out of a single charge, running Citrix. Also it runs silent, unlike my company Dell 7440….
I spend a month in Japan in 2014 with my then new 2013 i7 8GB/512GB 11-inch MacBook Air. And it was awesome, I could get everything done from a slim shoulder sling.
I love my 14" MBP to pieces, even if it's the M1 Pro model! Having a small laptop be so powerful, with a phenomenal display and great battery makes it my favorite laptop of all time :D
Different opinion here. I had the 14inch M1 Max before and why I went with Max chip is just because how fast the dual-encoder/decoder is. And things went down when I worked while traveling. I used Cinema 4D a lot and the top status bar is so small that the software's menu can't be fully displayed (thank you Apple for the notch). It is also way too small to squeeze all the pages in, in just one software.(This may be my personal case, the software I use does require many pages to be opened.) And also the battery on 14inch died so fast. I can drain the battery from 100% to 30% in only 3 hours, while only making PowerPoint!! This really gave me anxious while traveling with this laptop, and forced me to go to 16inch eventually. It did give me at least 2 more hours of heavy use. I did suffer a lot when carrying it due to the weight while traveling. Anyway, your video is so fun to watch. I can smell my stinky ROG laptop crying loud too.
I would go for the 14" over the 16" for travel. I have a 17" gaming laptop, and it is not portable. Meanwhile, I travel with a 2009 13" MacBook Pro 5,5, and it does the job keeping me entertained on long flights while keeping a small footprint and being lightweight. When I get a chance, I'll probably pick up a used 14" M1 Pro MBP for travel.
I have been using the baseline M3 Pro MacBook Pro in 14 Inch since November of last year in space Black and it's awesome. I only opt up the ssd storage to 1tb and with my student license it still cost me the same price tag. As an architect student it´s gonna be a great beast and I´m looking forward to see more apps (like Blender) who enable the chip based raytracing possibilities for faster renderings.
Those opening clips alone were fun and something new. Makes me feel like you should collaborate more with the likes of Sam and Prosser, using apple products or even broader tech whilst traveling / abroad. Just a thought.
I remember when the M3 Pro was first released and Luke said he “couldn’t recommend” the M3 pro lol Glad I went ahead and bought it anyways ! Massive upgrade from my 2015 (which he was definitely right about for years)
You're lucky that Niseko and the rest of Hokkaido gets so much snow. If it wasn't natural snow then all of those falls on the skis would have been a lot more painful. I really hate the fact that in Europe there are pretty much no slopes left that are all natural snow. The fake snow from the snow cannons is basically ice in powder form that immediately becomes ice again when lying on the mountain, so it's a very different skiing experience to that in Japan. I really wanna go snowboarding there again...
It depends how you’re using it. For the past 15 years I’ve been using 15.6 inch or 16 inch MacBook pros, but this time I got the 14 inch and boy am I enjoying the smaller footprint for when I’m not docked to my 32 inch, 4K monitor. I rarely use the speakers and most serious work is done while it’s attached to the large monitor. The rest of the time I might be on the lounge or out of the office working or travelling and in those cases the 14 inch is much better than the larger MacBook Pro. That’s my experience.
@@shred3005 Your experience is incredible and I agree, I am a music producer, and I used a MacBook Pro m1 2020 13”, the size was really small, but it was very portable and light, when in 2021 I changed to the 16-inch M1 Max model, my first Impressions were “this screen is amazing, but it is a portable desktop monitor”, you get used to it but when you are going to place the laptop on the desk you have to prepare the landing pad for this big boy, quite heavy. The trackpad, battery life and speakers are superior, but the 14-inch one is not far behind at all. I think this month I will make the jump to the 14-inch one. I will miss the two extra inches, but I want to be able to transport the laptop to the cooking without a problem or simply being on the sofa without the weight being a problem. I plan to buy a 27-inch monitor if I need screen space, for me right now the 14-inch is superior
I have the 14 inch MacBook Pro M3 Pro I have to say its the best computer I have ever owned , even though I am contemplating buying the 16 inch for home working , The 14 inch goes with everywhere wether I am travelling to Liverpool for work or London or Sheffield or anywhere in the UK to when I go abroad later this year to Italy I will be taking my 14 inch MacBook Pro M3 pro. I have the Silver one but if I do get the 16 inch then Space black will be the colour option for me . Great Video by the way.
that trip looks like a blast. i would probably go 14 inch no doubt. i have a 16 inch M1 Pro Max because we kinda weren't sure yet about the drawbacks or advantages and I wanted to future proof. If I were going to be traveling a lot, I would absolutely go 14 inch for my next purchase
If you are editing video, totally agree - for all others, MBA 13 is ultimate portable laptop ... on skiing, I thought he takes his laptop on the slopes - then I realized I skied in my Vision Pros! :-O
Agree with all your points except I took the 16. As a child I carried around a thinkpad T61 everyday and everywhere so I’m used to oversized laptops and am willing to live with that downside if it means I get better battery and more screen real estate Also theoretically quieter fans but that’s not an issue on any Apple silicon machine to begin with And yes, I was 5 when I had my T61, I got it as a hand me down from my father when he upgraded his work laptop
I was in the Philippines last year, also bringing a Macbook 16 M1 Pro.. I hated it and regretted bringing it with me 😅 now Im rocking an MacBook 14 M3 Pro, absolutely loving it
Bigger not always better ... I immediately went for the 16in MBPro when the M1 version was released but once getting it, realized so big and heavy that I simply didn't travel with it. Sold it off and bought 14in MBPro and it was perfect. Related, I immediately bought the 2018 12.9in iPad Pro when released and similarly found it too hefty and rarely used it. Sold it off and bought 11in iPad Pro and found it equally perfect!
I have a 14in for work, and there’s 1 thing the 14in w/ the Pro or Max does that the 15in MBA can’t: native support for at least 2 external display Ngl though, the 15in MBA really brings back how portable the Intel 15in were even if those were very problematic laptops
Soldered SSDs, with firmware on them iCloud locks, very sustainable and environmental friendly. Should be a deal breaker for any sane person! Not to mention pricing, and the cost of extra memory/storage, + the much shorter support (a 2011 PC laptop can run Win 11 smoothly with an SSD, a 2011 MacBook Pro needs a patcher and will still struggle very badly due to how heavy macOS got).
I think that model may be my next MacBook, but I’ll get it at discounted price after the next (M4) MacBook Pro is released. My Mac performance needs are modest; I’m still doing great with my 2020 M1-nothing 13-inch MacBook Pro. But that slightly larger and better quality screen along with extra performance sounds ideal for my eventual upgrade. I’ll feel a bit sad to let my trusty current MacBook go, it’s so compact, sturdy, and usable.
I was worried about desktop space vs my 16" Intel MBP, but to my surprise, setting the 14" scaling to "More Space", and the 16" to "Default", there's actually a bit more desktop space, despite being quite a bit smaller, so if your eyes can focus on a bit smaller text, there's no real benefit to go for the bigger 16", which got 200 grams heavier with the Apple Silicon, it's a full 600 grams, or a 13" iPad Pro heavier in 16" today. The Apple Silicon 14" actually also have almost the same resolution as the old 16" Intel, though the new 16" has higher resolution and even more desktop space.
@@sturmx96 true but you also get all the security updates and newes browsers work. I bought a 2015 mbp which was on Yosemite. You couldn’t even open almost any modern website with it.
The 14" is too big for any airplane tray table I've had the misfortune to use anyway. I use an 11" iPad Pro on planes because that's just about all that fits comfortably, and then I've got my 16" MBP ready to go when I get to the destination. The 14" is an awkward middle ground for me that doesn't excel at anything.
Both 14 inch and 16inch displays are TINY for stationary use. At home / the office you should have a large display, which is why I prefer 14 inch laptops as they're more portible while only being a little less comfortable in terms of screen realestate.
Luke. always ski on a shallow enough slope that you can go straight down the fall line. If you have to slalom back and forth across the slope to go slow enough, you are on a slope too expert for your current skill level. You are also a hazard for people coming downhill behind you.
I think the 15-inch M3 MacBook Air will be a great laptop with excellent value once it's released, but a refurbished 14-inch MBP will likely remain the best bang for your buck.
I think the mid-2015 15-inch Intel MacBook Pro is still far superior, here's why :

It's already been a few months and you're since left but a belated "welcome to Japan!"
What hotel did you stay in in Hokkaido? It looked beautiful?
As for the topic - I've been using a 15" for decades (my first mac laptop was the first Intel Core 17" - really nice laptop in it's day).
While the 14" is more transportable, I still think the 15" overall wins. More space (I'm a software developer) matters a lot. When it comes to using a plane, I usually end up either using an iPad or trying to sleep (as work is busy once you land!)
All the best from Japan!
Holy crap! That's silver dream you went down at 10:17! That's the run I also used when learning how to ski. Awesome stuff.
Watching this on the 2021 M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro right now.
My 14 inch MBP has always been my work horse since day one and I racked up mileage with me traveling. with at least 12 hour per day usage.
like the change in pace - the tech reviews cycle can get boring - spicing it up with vlog content is the way :P
It is also way too small to squeeze all the pages in, in just one software.(This may be my personal case, the software I use does require many pages to be opened.)
And also the battery on 14inch died so fast.
My M3 Pro 14in is a great travel buddy
Great to hear your insight into this MacBook Pro, and also very nice to see you having some fun!
Apple has been really killing it with their laptops since the introduction of the M1 Air. Still got that machine and it continues to be amazing.
I ended up going with the 14 inch MacBook Pro and don’t regret it. Best size for portability.
I KNOW THAT GUY!
ITS THAT ONE GUY FROM THE TINY APARTMENTS
Looks like an awesome holiday. I didn't know that you knew Tokyo Lens either. I was surprised when he appeared mid way.
I remember when the M3 Pro was first released and Luke said he “couldn’t recommend” the M3 pro lol
Glad I went ahead and bought it anyways !
Massive upgrade from my 2015 (which he was definitely right about for years)
That has to be the best intro for a tech review to date.
I don't care much about Macs, but it was really nice to see Japan. I need to get back there in the next year or so.
I have both. You are right in every way. I never take the 16 with me anymore and it's not that big a tradeoff.
I am in 16" gang. Those speakers are a banger and 14" is not even close.
True, my 14" has only 2 speakers, M.3 is smaller as Nvidia + intel ! need it ? OMEN 14 better ?
the 14'' feels like a child's toy after using the 16''
I love the 16” but it’s like a mini tv
So when is Apple going to put a MacBook Air into a 14 inch machine?
Just ordered my work 16" MacBook Pro. Never had one before & honestly am not sure which I would use on an international trip. I love my 14" M1 Pro.
If you are editing video, totally agree - for all others, MBA 13 is ultimate portable laptop ... on skiing, I thought he takes his laptop on the slopes - then I realized I skied in my Vision Pros! :-O
Watching this on a 14" M3 binned Max I got yesterday :)
Agree with all your points except I took the 16. As a child I carried around a thinkpad T61 everyday and everywhere so I’m used to oversized laptops and am willing to live with that downside if it means I get better battery and more screen real estate
Also theoretically quieter fans but that’s not an issue on any Apple silicon machine to begin with
And yes, I was 5 when I had my T61, I got it as a hand me down from my father when he upgraded his work laptop
I was in the Philippines last year, also bringing a Macbook 16 M1 Pro.. I hated it and regretted bringing it with me 😅 now Im rocking an MacBook 14 M3 Pro, absolutely loving it
Have a great trip because of this video.
this video its so inspiring, love this format
This is one of my favourite videos from you
What fun, thanks.
I have 14 inch Lenovo laptop for business use. nothing beats it battery wise
I have a 14in for work, and there’s 1 thing the 14in w/ the Pro or Max does that the 15in MBA can’t: native support for at least 2 external display
Ngl though, the 15in MBA really brings back how portable the Intel 15in were even if those were very problematic laptops
I moved from a 16" M1 MacBook Pro to a 14" M2 Max 30 core and honestly best decision of my life. It's the best laptop ever. 14" is goldilocks.
European subscriber living in Tokyo here! Welcome to Japan 😃
Someone needs to convince you to visit Seoul next vacation.
United flies direct to Seoul from LAX.
Wow I just came back from Japan trip. What a timing
“The biggest Macbook known to man.”
17 inch MacBook Pro: Am I a joke to you?
Great comparison between the Macs 👌 As a swiss person it was super funny to see you to struggling on the slopes 😁
“Its an M3 Ultra Max triple double” 🤣
I still have mine from 10 years ago. Sturdy and reliable -- except that the keys need replacement. Running some antique OS.
If i were you i'd intall either Ventura or Sonoma using Open core legacy patcher. Works perfectly 👌
@@Syntappi They just add more bells and whistles which you rarely use. I'm running mojave and I would be happy if it could run on newer macs.
@@sturmx96 true but you also get all the security updates and newes browsers work. I bought a 2015 mbp which was on Yosemite. You couldn’t even open almost any modern website with it.
Would have been hilarious if you were all skiing with Vision Pros on for the SnowShow
Welcome to Japan
Bro doesn't give a shit about climatic crisis ffs, he takes flight like I use my car.
Missed opportunity to wear the Vision Pro in the thumbnail
I think the 15-inch M3 MacBook Air will be a great laptop with excellent value once it's released, but a refurbished 14-inch MBP will likely remain the best bang for your buck.
You should try cross country skiing and then check out the onsens (hotsprings).
Luke was like “how can I write off my vacation as a business expense?” Lol
I just bought a 14 inch MacBook Pro M3!!
Welcome to Tokyo, Japan!
