My ancestors moved from Scotland to the US a long time ago, not happy in Virginia, my great great grandfather moved to the wild mountains of Kentucky, because it reminded them of home, my Dad moved to Michigan, but we went to visit often, one night on grandpa's porch, far down the holler, I heard a piper playing, Flower of Scotland, I'll never forget that.

I went in Scotland in July 2007...12 days! Glasgow, Inveraray,Glencoe Valley and Ballachulish, Fort Augustus, Loch Ness and Fort William, Inverness, Perth and Edinburgh... Sunsets at the 11 p.m and almost winter temperatures! I would definitely come back again! (sorry my english)

All around the world, the bagpipe is synonymous with Scotland. It is as iconic as shortbread, haggis and the kilt. So what do we do? We pick a national anthem that can't be properly played on the national instrument. They have to change the third last note of the song when it's played on the pipes because it's a funny minor note and consequently the whole tune loses it's punch. Personally I'm with Billy Connolly on what we need for a national anthem. It goes like this 'We come from Gibrovia and we don't give a sh1t' Repeat four times, cheer loudly, fail dismally, get drunk. Good enough?
Technically it's called a flattened seventh, as the tune is in the mixolydian modal scale. Quite often pipers will play the 3rd last note by going UP to the supertonic, which sounds well with the unison voices. Here the singers followed the pipers and didn't or were unable to suitably flatten the 3rd last note as you correctly noted.
Hearing 'Flower of Scotland' at Murrayfield or anywhere else is something special & hard to describe. Scottish Rugby is all about pride, passion, commitment, discipline, teamwork & skill. This England supporter cannot wait for the next Calcutta Cup to share a pint or three with my Scottish brethren. Ay salute yous all!

Hearing 'Flower of Scotland' at Murrayfield or anywhere else is something special & hard to describe. Scottish Rugby is all about pride, passion, commitment, discipline, teamwork & skill. This England supporter cannot wait for the next Calcutta Cup to share a pint or three with my Scottish brethren. Ay salute yous all!

Im so fascinated by scottish history, im not scottish but knowing how their people fought bravely giving their lives for what they love so much, their tradition, land for what it was theirs. It makes my heart shrinks thinking about it idk why and i cry cause there is so much sentiment and bravery in the lyrics. I admire scotland and its history.

One thing I've learned from been in the armed forces, only the Scottish,English, Irish and Welsh are allowed to slag each other off, any other country does it and its like fuck up time 🤣🤣..and let's face it the Flower of Scotland is by far the best National Anthem in the world and that's coming from an English man
