You have no idea how much this video has helped me I'm joining the reme recovery mechanics when I'm 17 which obviously they do different things on tour but it has helped me get an idea into the process of leving and returning ect thank you very much!!👊🇬🇧👍
Glad it’s helped you mate, if you head over to the British Army TH-cam channel. I put together a video from where I am at the minute, I interviewed a guy from the reme in that video. The video is called “meet the LRRG” (Mali).

Another great vid m8. You should do a video about all the crazy and funny shit that happened whilst you were on tour. You touched on one story in your podcast and would be interesting to hear more.
Ranger Media It depends of course on what is happening over seas and what unit it is but normally they would have about a year to 18 months at home to train up and redeploy.
Love the vid mate💪 down at pirbright atm was meant to pass out 24th but the whole pandemic you know the score. This got me going and reminded me this is the job I want. Great vid
Yeah there’s a lot of info out there on basic training, but it’s just a small blip in your whole career and life in the Army. After training is were the magic happens and you do great things.
Sick video! Any chance you could do a vid on training for the infantry? I’ve been looking around and there’s not much advice or tips for training. Cheers
Ethan Macey Cheers mate appreciated 🤟🏻. Yeah I can get something like that sorted, in short it’s just fitness and being prepared, the Infantry side of things will come once you go into training.
HI Ranger Media. I am 16 and am aspiring to join the army when older. What has been in my mind about operations is sanitation. I always wonder whether soldiers on the front lines bathe, clean their teeth, shave etc for their time on tour. Most may assume I am concerned about keeping myself clean and shaved for my time on tour, but I actually hope that were I to go on tour, I would finish it with long hair, a beard, dirty etc, because when I return home or to base after the tour, I can truly appreciate bathing, showering, or feeling the cool wind on my face after shaving. Not only this, but it also helps highlight the fact that life on operations is massively different from normal civilian life or even army life at home, where the lack of sanitation would be something different to experience, something difficult to experience in our society, because most people can keep clean at home. I understand that less diseases are caught, but still. The point is, such circumstances would, for me, help make the mission more memorable, more enjoyable on return, help me appreciate the leisure of life more and provide an experience no one could get in the world. Could you tell me, from your experience, were you in such conditions? Many thanks and best wishes in the army from civy street!
Are rangers in the royal Irish trained in parachuting, because it seems that some of the lads who have been in the regiment for a while have wings on their arm above their flashes. Cheers lad!
Yes mate, so a few years back we left the 16 Air Assault Brigade so the majority of our tours to Afghanistan where with either 2 or 3 Para. The first tour in 2006 seen lads in mixed company’s which the aloud lads to go on P coy and then onto jumps. You could still get on P coy it’s harder to get on my possible, getting your jumps is a different story as we arnt in the Brigade anymore.
Josh Moffett Thanks mate! Not sure I’m hoping sooner rather than later, I’ve got a really awesome guest in mind , so just need to get the email chain started. I’ll update via stories, but it’s definitely a route I want to pursue.
Cheers mate there is a guy on here “The scatman” you will see his comment on the basic training vid, he’s a marine. So might be able to give you more specifics. Good luck
Brilliant video! I’ll be joining the Royal Engineers soon. I liked how you touched on investing, the market has completely crashed so buying high value stocks will be super cheap. I know where my military pay check will be going!
First video of yours that ive watched but your channel seems class mate, keep up the good content, im also hopefully joining the army, got my interview with them on wednesday (over the phone due to the current pandemic) just a bit nervous 😂
Savage video by far one of my favourites 👌. When on tour whats combat and firefights like? Like obviously you train heavily for months for these situations and then you get the opportunity to put your training in to action.
Thanks mate appreciated! So yeah I’m short you’ve hit the nail on the head, training for a big event to actually then go into a do it real time is brilliant and rewarding. No fire fight it ever the same really.
Are there any English in the regiment? My great grandfather was Irish and fought in WW2, always thought if I joined would love to follow in his footsteps. 😎
Can you do a video on other army units you work with. So if the UK and US work together who is in charge, do ranks correlate, who are the better or worse countries to work with etc....?
Happy days and thanks. I've worked with some good reservists and bad ones. As a whole its a really good option for someone who can not commit to service, full time.
I have a question so I wanna join infantry this year and when I’ve done basic training phase 1 and 2 and I’m a solider can you only deploy once? Or can you deploy as much as you want to places
Just outta curiosity when are you presented with a medal? I thought it was after a tour (not all but I know people would be presented with medals after afghan?) Also keep the videos up! Super interesting and informative :)
Thanks Sara appreciated. So yes after any qualifying Op tour you Will be presented a medal specific to that campaign. There’s normally a parade put together and they are presented that way. Difference with the British Army is, you will only get one medal for the campaign, so I’ve been to Afghanistan 3 times on 7 month tours, the first two being war fighting, then if someone was to deploy to Kabul now it’s now not an offensive tour. They gain the same medal, so we would both have one Afghanistan medal. Other Army’s get medals every time they deploy on operations.
Ranger Media cheers man! Really appreciate you answering my question! Final quick q- so let’s say you’ve done the Herrick days tour, you’re presented with that medal but like yourself did you went back to Afghan last year...would you not get a medal as it wasn’t offensive (I’m presuming) or would you be given the same medal from herrick or none at all as it wasn’t offensive? Are there even offensive tours anymore (like currently)
@@niashipman88 You only get one medal regardless of whether a fighting tour or not. Some have bars or rosettes on the medal depending on where in country and when the tour was. For example I've done Afghanistan 4 times and have 1 Afghanistan medal. I've done 2 tours of Iraq and have 1 Iraq medal. If you accumulate 720 days (24 months) on qualifying tours you get the Accumulated Campaign Service Medal (ACSM). Every 720 days on ops after that you get a bar on the ACSM. Not all ops count towards this though.
Peter Griffen Cheers mate, so the joining process has not stopped you can still go through it to the point of needing face to needing medical etc. Regards to actual training straying is down to the government and how everything plays out. I would follow news updates and that will start to give you an idea, but applications etc can all still happen.
i know am waiting to start at basic. i spoke to the careers office today and they have no update when the training will start back up. so frustrating as ive been in a appeal process for 4 years and just been accepted to then wait on the covid 19 situation to calm
@@Rangermedia i hope its not much longer now. Could you please do a video on how to prepare for starting at catterick and what to expect and any tips and tricks. I would much appreciate that 💯
Elliott Willcott I’ve been informed I’ll be back training around June/July depending on the government and the situation, so I suggest just doing exercise and hoping it comes early 🙏🏽 You’ll be squared away before you know it 🤙🏾
You apply to join a Regiment before you go anywhere near basic training. If its Royal Irish then that falls under the Infantry trade, the main thing to pass there is the physical assessment. This is the same for the whole of the Infantry
Hi Luke. In one of your videos not sure if it’s this one ( I just returned to this vid for the question ) you stated that soldiers receive a 5k ‘tax refund’ per annum, I might have taken it slightly out of context but could you yourself give context onto this subject?
Hi, you mentioned something about taking promotional. So my question is can a private make a choice of been an officer and also how many years would it take a private soldier before he can apply for officer selection?
Because you’re from NI, are you automatically a ranger in the Irish regiment if you’re in infantry? Or how does that work? I’ve been trying to find more information about recruits from NI.. is it the same as other recruits from throughout the UK? If anyone could help me out that would be great☺️
@@Rangermedia I though so that's what I got told how many storeman do you know who had the high life in bastion with it on with there lovely air con rooms and pizzas every night lol
Hey bro Ive recently applied and have an average pace of 9:45 a mile. Is that decent enough to pass the assessment centre or at least getting there? Thanks for the awesome videos BTW!
They have they’re fighting units as well. Same structure as well I believe. In the particular tour I talk about in this video it was a commando unit we replaced, than another one came and replaced us when we finish.
comrade lenin Master your own body weight and build on your running. If you arrive to training with a great foundation ie being able to plank/ press up / squat and run all well with really good form. That will set up to advance more during training.
They are inside the special forces group as a whole in a supporting role. It’s not the same same selection process to join the sfsg as it is for the tier one units. Specific details on the selection can be found from your unit coc. If your not in the Forces yet then I’m afraid details on selection process’s are very limited for obvious reasons. In short, you’ll be doing a totally different job that what you would be doing in a normal unit and the process to get there is still very challenging but different to other units.
Depends on what unit you go to. However the tour I was talking about in the video is not what the Afghanistan deployments are like now. That era has finished now. It’s just looking to the future now.
Depends on circumstances, if you have a criminal record it becomes more difficult. If you where kicked out just for being a Rocket then you should be fine.
I’ve wanted to join the armed forces for as long as i can remember i’m 16 now and am going to do A levels then going in as an officer afterwards but i haven’t got a clue as to what role id like to do, i just don’t want to sit behind a desk. Any suggestions as to what i should do going forward.
It can really vary, deployments come in all shapes and sizes and the main combat kinetic ones arnt on at the minute which is a good thing. You will still deploy all over the place on training missions and overseas exercise, allowing you to see everywhere from a different perspective.
Yeah you will get paid more daily, the amount depends on time served and will continue to go up the longer your in. Feeding is all completely free when deployed on exercise or operations.
There are so many different factors, I’ll use myself as an example. After serving a 22 year career I’ll get out and be 40 years old so still young to enter into a completely new area. After serving the 22 years and moving through the ranks at normal I’ll leave with 65k lump sum and 1K a month pension. Regards to work, it’s totally up to you what you do wile your in, with the Infantry it will take extra work to manage yourself and what you want to do afterwards. I practice photography/videographer as it’s an area I’ll move into once I leave. Other guys have moved into security, physical training, project management etc . The sky is your limit. Don’t get me wrong there is dudes who just do the Infantry stuff and don’t prepare for life after. No one will tell you how to , that part will fall into your own responsibility. 100% can have an rewarding career in the infantry whilst preparing for afterwards.
No problems, yeah two good choices there. CMT you will need GCSE's C and above, im not 100% sure on the particular subjects but Maths and English would definitely be two of them.
Right at this moment yes, However people were also saying that pre 2001 then 14 years of it came. The world is not going anywhere close to world peace theres still bad guys out there doing bad things.
If you only do four years you chance of deploying is less but it still could happen for you. It just all depends on what unit your going for, when your going for them and what cycle they are on.
@@Rangermedia like you make it sound very very fun, which it may be, but never sort of say oh yh by the way you may die. You may have spoken about this in your other videos, I'm only speaking about this video.

@@lachlanchester8142 they go on deployments all throughout the year, theres plenty to do as an infanteer
Because you’re from NI, are you automatically a ranger in the Irish regiment if you’re in infantry? Or how does that work? I’ve been trying to find more information about recruits from NI.. is it the same as other recruits from throughout the UK? If anyone could help me out that would be great☺️
Question for you the afganistan medal you got the Rosette on the ribbon is there only a certain amount of people who can wear this?
Rosette was designed for troops forward of camp bastion etc
@@Rangermedia I though so that's what I got told how many storeman do you know who had the high life in bastion with it on with there lovely air con rooms and pizzas every night lol
Hey bro Ive recently applied and have an average pace of 9:45 a mile. Is that decent enough to pass the assessment centre or at least getting there? Thanks for the awesome videos BTW!
Don't think so mate!! You need to knock a few minutes of that!
Nice video, are the the Royal Marines the same or is it different
They have they’re fighting units as well. Same structure as well I believe. In the particular tour I talk about in this video it was a commando unit we replaced, than another one came and replaced us when we finish.
Ranger Media alright cheers👍🏼
dont suppose you knew tommy creighton he took a round to the helmet in afghan?
I'm after joining at 16 but i am not in shape any ways you recommend to get army fit
comrade lenin Master your own body weight and build on your running. If you arrive to training with a great foundation ie being able to plank/ press up / squat and run all well with really good form. That will set up to advance more during training.
Hii please I got a question, is the special force support group the same as special forces? Also the selection process for sfsg the same as sf?
They are inside the special forces group as a whole in a supporting role. It’s not the same same selection process to join the sfsg as it is for the tier one units. Specific details on the selection can be found from your unit coc. If your not in the Forces yet then I’m afraid details on selection process’s are very limited for obvious reasons. In short, you’ll be doing a totally different job that what you would be doing in a normal unit and the process to get there is still very challenging but different to other units.
What’s the chance of going on a tour Afghanistan now?
Depends on what unit you go to. However the tour I was talking about in the video is not what the Afghanistan deployments are like now. That era has finished now. It’s just looking to the future now.
0 these days, next ones gonna be Iran or Africa i expect
@@jamiew.2718 We have lads over there all the time on rotation 2 Para just came back..
@@taigolan8734 a mate of mine just had his tour scrapped last minute
im scottish and 12 so would i be in the scottish regiment or british
You choose.
@@JamesJones-ft6bv so i can decide if im in the british or scottish?
@@connorbyers8667 The Scottish regiment is in the British Army. You can join any regiment.
Can u join if your a recovering addict 5 years clean
Hey
Out with operations are you based in your regiment and work Monday to Friday?
I got kicked out of school will I still be able to join
Depends on circumstances, if you have a criminal record it becomes more difficult. If you where kicked out just for being a Rocket then you should be fine.
Ranger Media I don’t have a criminal record I was just bit of a muppet when I was at school
Yeah you’ll not have any dramas then. Just have to knuckle down for basic.
How long have you got to climatise , days , weeks etc ?
Normally its around 1 - 2 weeks.
do you know anything about the training in the ams? specifically after basic and training to be a cmt?
Love to see some content about training to be a C.M.T
I’ve wanted to join the armed forces for as long as i can remember i’m 16 now and am going to do A levels then going in as an officer afterwards but i haven’t got a clue as to what role id like to do, i just don’t want to sit behind a desk. Any suggestions as to what i should do going forward.
if you go in as a officer be prepered for lots of paperwork basicly go infantry and not as a officer is my advice
How long have you served for mate and have you got a rank? Cheers!
I’ve served 14years this year and I’m the rank of Sgt.
How often would you say an infantry soldier would be deployed?
It can really vary, deployments come in all shapes and sizes and the main combat kinetic ones arnt on at the minute which is a good thing. You will still deploy all over the place on training missions and overseas exercise, allowing you to see everywhere from a different perspective.
Do you earn extra-cash when on deployment? And what about feeding?
Yeah you will get paid more daily, the amount depends on time served and will continue to go up the longer your in. Feeding is all completely free when deployed on exercise or operations.
Yeah also when on tour there's nothing to spend your money on so you come back with dosh in the bank 😉
I feel like you’d be left without a career after you leave, does being in the infantry apply to any careers?
@@Rangermedia Couldn't have said it better
Are you in the irish army rangers?
No im in the Royal Irish Regiment inside the British Army.
How can I join the British army
Apply online through the official website
apply.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/can-i-join
What was the hardest part of the army
Do Combat Medical Technicians get put with infantry on deployment?
Yes all the time. On certain operations we would have one CMT embedded into each Platoon.
Ranger Media Okay thanks for the response. I’m debating CMT or Infantry when I’m 16
No problems, yeah two good choices there. CMT you will need GCSE's C and above, im not 100% sure on the particular subjects but Maths and English would definitely be two of them.
Ranger Media Okay thanks :)
How’s the payment set up while you’re in phase 1
Be lucky to get a combat deployment if u ain’t sf in these days
Can you explain?
Right at this moment yes, However people were also saying that pre 2001 then 14 years of it came. The world is not going anywhere close to world peace theres still bad guys out there doing bad things.
Just wondering in your 4 years do u get deployed everyone
If you only do four years you chance of deploying is less but it still could happen for you. It just all depends on what unit your going for, when your going for them and what cycle they are on.
Thanks
Can indian join reme
no offence but you make it seem like there isn't the enemy out there trying to kill you.
What do you mean?
@@Rangermedia like you make it sound very very fun, which it may be, but never sort of say oh yh by the way you may die. You may have spoken about this in your other videos, I'm only speaking about this video.
