  • What sprocket size is best for you? In this video I go over different BMX sprocket sizes and explain the differences between small and big sprocket and the impact they have on your riding! This covers three common sprocket sizes, 25t, 28t, and 31t. 25 tooth sprockets have been standard in the BMX world, but ill explain why i believe the 28 tooth sprocket is the best choice for the all around BMX rider.

I street race my Bmx Bike against road bikers and other bmx bikers and mountain bikers but I have a 30t sprocket in the front and 9t cassette in the back with odyssey Tom Dugan 100 psi max tires and I run 175mm cranks to and I've reached 31.9 mph on flat Road in a short distance sprint and I've smoked so many road bikers it's crazy and funny too because I'm 6 ft 1 and 187lbs and riding a Bmx beating road bikers on flat Roads and downhills lol it's so much Fun

In the 80s and 90s, 20" bike gears were something like 45 - 16. 170 -175 crank arms off the shelf.
My indoor gear was 44 - 16. Crank arm 180.
My out door big track was 46 - 16. 180 crank arm.
My cruiser gear ( if I can remember was 42 -18.
I was tall. 6ft 3. 190 lbs. Big guys couldn't spin like little guys. So we ran bigger gears.
Have you ever seen a giraffe spin? Very awkward lol.
    I miss racing.
I don't understand these tiny gears you guys run today.

I'm torn. I LOVE 28 in the bowls. It gives you that one useful crank when you need it. But riding small obstacles and using pedal pressure, 25 gives you so much more control. I need two bikes is the answer, lol.

May I know what is the different between big chainring with big cog vs small chainring with small cog. Example: 44t:16= 2.75 & 25t : 9= 2.77 . Is it big chainring/cog can last longer and small chainring/cog give more space to perform stunt?

Depends on the rear sprocket but yeah a 28 is good maybe a 30 biggest I would go is 32 see what’s on the bike and the go from there normally the bigger the front sprocket I’ll be harder to pedal, but you’ll get up to speed quicker the smaller the sprocket it’ll make it feel like you’re not peddling at all and barely going anywhere🎉

Hi I have a question and I hope you could help me with it, I would like to know what size sprocket should I use for just bike riding long distances for example 3 miles one way but I don't want to get my legs tired out, I have a (Nice) Schwinn BMX but it's hard at first to pedal because it has a 44 teeth sprocket with a 18 teeth back tire, I just want a well balanced gear ratios for bike riding short trips or even 5 mile trips.

Is 28 9, harder to pedal from stop then
44 16 gearing , or is it slightly easier as accusation but still decent top speed just not as much as 44 16.?

A little bit of course question, are the free coasters much louder over a freewheel hub, when coasting? And when faking on a free coaster, when you do pedal is it a fluid motion forward or a second pause? Thanks

I did 34 mph on a flat road recently on my road race bike and it felt amazing and that's because I train almost every day and go fast all the time and on my bmx I went 31.9 mph on a flat Road a few months back and that's very fast for a bmx Freestyle bike to go you know but that's because my legs put out over 1,880 watts of power when sprinting because I street race all the time and no one where I live wants to race me because I'm that fast and I've done 40 to 41 mph on the bmx freestyle bike before down hill thats probably the max it will go too and the road bike has gone over 42 mph downhill before but that road isn't close to being maxed out Because it's got a 58t chainring and 11t cassette so it's big gearing!

You'd need legs like Roberto Carlos to accelerate with gearing that high😅the top speed would be insane but starting on a hill would likely be impossible.
30/9 will give you 30+mph when you max out.
Anything higher is going into overkill territory imo

Ive got a bunch of sprockets. Running 30/9 currently.
My daughters bike came with 32/16 and she isn't very strong yet but still maxed out way too easy and couldn't keep up. I changed hers to a 36t sprocket and now it's more like my original 25/9 gearing and she's much happier being able to go faster.

    • @ronabrums1506

29in takes more effort to get rolling. I’d say 25t and you should add more teeth in the back (like 10 or 11t). Otherwise you would have to go smaller on the front sprocket like 23t. My 24in at 25x10 feels the same as my 20in with 25x9.

5'11" long torso. Haha I'm running 28/9 on my 20" with 165 cranks. Was fine until I built a 22" bike with 23/9 with 170 cranks. I wonder if 170's would make the 28/9 20" bike feel better than the 165's. Thanks!

Marketing technique IMHO. Your sprocket still flexes when you pedal hard from the start, meaning wear and tear sets in more if you ride hardcore daily. Smaller sizes really dosen't matter, but with ample amount of pressure each day gives it more probability of cracking or chipping on the metal. I always run 39 or 40T to 16 FC, so if I torque for speed it'll be a speed I can handle, or at least something enough to clear a jump at full adrenaline to make me cautious and think WTF am I doing.
