    Thank you so much for doing this video. I see ppl commenting on this all the time “correcting” others telling them to stop calling Satin Spar, Selenite. Now I know what to say and have an example. I’ve got Faden quartz and regular quartz points so I get what you’re saying…. There is no difference!! Thanks again for the info😊

    I've been collecting crystals for about 15 years and I knew there was a difference between these two but I was using 'Satin spar" and "selenite'. SO, I'm very happy you clarified it for me as using "satin spar" as an adjective and not the name. One of your other videos said this as well. I really appreciate learning. I used to be in a few crystal groups but I got tired of the arguments about which crystal is which. Thank you! I will be following you. Would love to see if you have any videos on citrine, natural verses heat treated and what you have to say about those.

    Wow thank you for this! I had no idea that this was a thing! I really appreciate you posting these comparison videos! Id love to see you do one on Rhodonite & Rhodochrosite. I always get them confused because their names are so similar, both have pink and black, and their metaphysical properties seem so similar. Is one more better for one thing compared to the other?

    Thanks Jen. I nearly went out and spent a heap on some clear selenite just a couple of weeks ago, thinking it was somehow “better”... but cos I love my satin spar selenite so much anyway I just thought I’d hold off for a bit and think about it some more... do some more research... then along you come with this gem of a video. Loving these comparisons. I have a few I’d love to see... probably already on your list... 1) heat treated citrine vs natural citrine 2) New Jade vs serpentine 3) Fire agate vs red agate/jasper 4) Any tips for distinguishing between the various kinds of garnet... OK that will do for now 🙋‍♀️😂😘. Much love.

    • @CrystalGuidance

      Yes you can wipe it down with a bit of water. It will not hurt your Selenite. The most that it would do is make it a little less polished looking. I have wiped down a Selenite and there was no change to it at all.

    If I understand correctly, satin spar and selenite have the exact same composition but so does alabaster. If we differentiate alabaster, which is fine grained gypsum then shouldn't the other two varieties- crystalline aka selenite and fibrous aka satin spar- be differentiated as well? Might it be more accurate to say satin spar gypsum rather than satin spar selenite?

    I have a question about the fibrous selenite. I just received my first bundle of sticks and honestly the fibrous crystal bits that had all fallen off inside the bag freaked me out a bit. I haven't taken them out of the package (I just got the last night by mail) bc I was worried about possibly breathing them in or these shards getting under my sensitive skin like slivers of wood. Is this anything to be anxious about? Is there a proper way to store or display selenite to minimise this shedding of fibers? I have crystals that are quite toxic if proper caution isn't taken and I'm less nervous about them lol. It's just something about the long glassy fibers that freaked me out a bit. Thanks so much for another great video. I swear you post these videos just as I'm wondering about a mineral everytime. The timing is so oddly accurate. 💖

    • @CrystalGuidance
      @CrystalGuidance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Juliet! That's actually such a great question. Yes, they can cause splinters like a piece of wood. However, like wood it is not likely unless you're really doing something to cause it. The great thing about Selenite being so soft is they you can run it under water and take a soft toothbrush or a wash cloth and rub it down to help smooth it out. That will help to minimize the shedding and it will not hurt your crystal.
      The timing on this is divine intervention. I was planning on doing a crystal oracle deck review but I had a dream of how I needed to do this Selenite / Satin Spar video, so I did. *grins* I am so glad that you found it helpful. Enjoy your new crystals!

      @@CrystalGuidance I just got a selenite stick part of a set and I absolutely love it but it is still shedding shards. As for the scrubbing under water this is definitely a no no according to everything I’ve seen. No water for this one which worried me I thought I caused the shards by submerging the set that came in cold rainwater briefly upon arrival.

    • @CrystalGuidance
      @CrystalGuidance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the water did not cause it. Water can, over time, cause Selenite to dissolve. It is not a quick dissolve. A polished Selenite will loose it’s luster, but since yours is a raw piece that is not a factor. I offered you my suggestion based upon my knowledge and experience. You must follow what feels right for you. That is my only suggestion to help with the naturally occurring splintering. Good luck!

    Can you call a piece of coal a diamond just because they have the same chemical composition? Or is one rarer because it was formed under different conditions? They are both Gypsum, not both Selenite.

    • @CrystalGuidance
      @CrystalGuidance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun fact: Diamonds are not actually formed from Coal. That is a common misconception.
      Coal does not have a fixed chemical formula. Nor does it have a repeating geometric pattern. Where as Diamond has the chemical composition of C and is an Isometric crystal.

    • @TheRealHoltzy
      @TheRealHoltzy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrystalGuidance Both Carbon based, just as Selenium and Velvet Spar are both Gypsum based. But as you yourself pointed out, just because they share the same base, they are not the same at all. I never said you make diamonds out of coal, I was pointing out the absurdity of your understanding of the two crystals by making a similarly ridiculous parallel based on 2 DIFFERENT products of nature based on a common base element. Selenium and Velvet Spar do not look the same, feel the same, have the same vibration, grow in the same formations or share similar rarity, or cost the same... They just grow together. Please just stop.

    • @CrystalGuidance
      @CrystalGuidance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comparison was no where near accurate. And you have missed the point of my video. As clearly stated, Satin Spar Gypsum is sold with the trade name of Satin Spar Selenite. Furthermore Satin Spar as a stand-alone name is incorrect. It is a descriptive term only. The first crystal to use the term Satin Spar was Calcite. There is also Satin Spar Aragonite.
      I did not say that they looked the same, felt the same, or cost the same. Perhaps you should actually watch the video instead of jumping to those conclusions.

    Your information is inaccurate. Good example of this is you dont call chalcedony, quartz or visa versa. They are chemically the same but one is micro crystalline growth and the other is actual crystal growth. Also selenite sheets and flakes when split satin spar is fibrous. Even mind at quoted these two pieces of gypsum not the same. Lastly if they are then alabaster would also be called selenite. They have different names because the crystal habitat are not the same. Just quartzite, chalcedony and quartz all have different crystal habitats. A lot of minerals have the same chemical composition but due to the crystal growth or lack thereof have different name. I mine selenite for living and have seen the different crystal habitats they form within. I would never call satin spar selenite.
