It was a way of preserving culture, even though that culture went against the culture of the current time... strange i must admit.

Nations exists and as communism is the step after capitalism which is after feodalism, it's normal that people reminds history before communism, because present of peoples is shaped by past, and as Napoleon said in France : "From Clovis to the Comity of Public Salute, I take on eveything"
Yes, but on Soviet era the libretto of the opera have be changed : Ivan Soussanin give his life not for the tzar, but for Mimine and Pojarsky ! (an absolute nonsens...).
Listening to the original non-Soviet version, you can already tell it is clearly just a patriotic song and not a regime-promoting imperialist song
Russian tried to destroy others cultures and appriciated their own. In Belarus they sucseed. To 2% of belarussians the belarussian is native language and forrussian lukashenkos regime is make people suffer if they are show interest to real history, even some literature is under ban@@no-if1ol

Еремеев был МАСТЕР инструментовки и аранжировки..в этом оркестре в разные годы всегда были выдающиеся инструментовщики-военные дирижеры:
Дульский,Дунаев,Суровцев,Скворцов, Алексей Клещенко,Пучков..Сейчас среди военных дирижеров инструментовщиков очень мало..жаль..

@@xboxstudent Well, I don't collect singable/choral or symphonic audio recordings. This opera was restored to the Bolshoi Theater in 1939 and I think you can find recordings...

Why was this the stand-in for the Imperial anthem in films set in Tsar-era Russia? Because this song's lyrics don't mention God or Christianity by name, as is the case in the actual anthem of the time.
The song had actually existed when Russian Empire still exist, and the song somehow was still popular even when Soviet party ruled, though the lyrics were changed
@@Kalashnikov413 I mean Soviet movies set in Imperial times never use "God save the Tsar" when there is a scene where the anthem is played.
