  • Phase three is complete and this room is really starting to come together. Although painting is my least favorite thing to do on these builds I was happy with how it turned out in the end.

I'm definitely not a professional painter, but I worked a few summers in home remodeling. A couple quick tips to help your stuff last longer:
-when you take a break, plastic wrap your brush or roller to keep it from drying out
-try to keep the paint in the bottom inch or so of the brush. If it gets all the way to the part where the bristles meet the handle, the bristles will start to splay out.
-best way to wash out rollers: after most of the paint is off, take a garden hose and cover most of it with your thumb to get a really high pressure. With the roller still on the handle, spray just one side to make it spin. As it spins, the rest of the paint will come off and it will be mostly dry. Plus it's fun!
Hope that helps! Love the room and looking forward to seeing it finished!

I'll definitely second the spinning the roller tip! I've been doing that for the last several years. Works like a charm. Just got to make sure you angle the roller just right (or hide behind a piece of cardboard or something) or you'll paint your shoes.

A wire brush cleans good, just be sure to see go.one way down..and your 5 way has a curve on it to go over paint roller to clean and push out excess. If you dont have a 5 way, get one. I use mine for so much.

I just came across your channel tonight, while searching out chicken coops. Have watched about 8 videos of yours so far..with the little chicken coop, tractor/run, solar lights, self waterers....and then came across this LOFT room idea...which my daughter just drew up plans for this morning! "Surprise Mom--i want a loft." So Lucky ME! To have seen all this in one sitting...planning our first little chicken coop on stilts ourselves. LOL Great, full-of-info, articulately done videos! I must say. TY

Would have been a good idea to notch the 4x4's so that the 2x4s rested on the 4x4 then attached the two. That way, if for some reason force is exerted on the very corner and the nails fail, the 2x4 gets support from the 4x4 without nails. Much stronger/safer.
Cool DIY stuff. Keep it up.

Good to see the young ones helping, use damp jean cloth to sand as it will stop dust mess, have to rinse once in a while, prime everything once first then assemble

On the last step that you covered because the post was in the way, a hinge or two at the back and a step that lifted would have been a cool hidey hole. I love the way things are looking. Great job.

Love your work, great ideas and craftsmanship. TIP FOR THE DAY, I used a cheap deshedding dog/cat comb to get the last remains of paint stuck of my expensive brushes after washing, swirling, swirling, swirling, and always baby shampoo for the last wash. The bristles come out soft and clean with many more uses. Try it sometime.

Paint 3, 4, 5-- even up to 7-in-1s-- have paint combs in order to clean the brushes, allowing them to be reused many times!

I have brushes that are over 30 years old and still in good shape but haven't needed them in over ten years. =)
I bought a Sears airless that pumped from a gallon can to paint my house and was the best thing I could have bought.

Tiny room very nice BUT! the plywood under the matress should be holed so the matress has air circulation if not every thing rots. 🙂😗

i should have posted this in the other video.. but still not sure why you have the legs on the wall corners? those wall studs will easily hold that frame with just the one free corner having a leg.

I realize you said, "pure white", but, there are 50-70 iterations of that. I'm assuming you are buying American, so that'll eliminate some.
Please spec your paint? Color name, brand, which sheen, where, please? Thank you!

You did a great job. There isn t much to improve on. I would kept tje integrity of the wood, maybe a white wash finish, if someone who is on a Budget. That paints is nice and less work. But on new construction, anything with with a primer should be fine. I like the spackle , but if In a hurry can use fast dry white caulk over nail and corners. No sanding to deal with. Absolutely no silicone, just caulk. The spackle will have a much smoother finish. Which you cant use if leaving the wood finish. Just trim

You said that painting all the little nooks on the shelving units was a real time-waster. If you ever do a similar project again, it may be beneficial to paint the large sheets of plywood first, before building them into the shelving units. Don't worry, I would have built them the same as you, and then painted them after building them. But, it might be better (time-wise) to paint the plywood, then build. ?? Looks good, either way.

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Patrick Wagz that was definitely an option. I am not sure if it would be better or now since I had to do all of the mudding to the rough spots too but it may have helped a little
