Nasu is so good at writing characters that their gender is secondary. You could gender bend the cast of FSN and nothing integral to the character would be lost. I wouldn't say he's the best at writing female characters in the Japanese media but he's definitely in the top 5 if not top 3.

I agree. This is especially true for Artoria as her internal conflict regarding the fate of Camelot under her reign and the regrets due to it would largely remain the same. Her interaction with Shirou and Gilgamesh would be a bit different but the core of Fate's take on King Arthur would still be there.

The fact that in every nasu work you can find at least 3 females that people have to fight over for best heroine is the only proof you need. I think that the great thing about Type Moon is its take on gender. There are a lot of characters whose gender is very important to them like Artoria. One of the things that i personally love about Artoria is the fact that shes a girl. In our world Arthur is a man but in Fate Arthur is a girl and you're forced to ask "Why?" And then you find out that her story is impacted because shes a girl. I know that wasn't the intention of Nasu when he created her and most of what i am drawing from is based on hindsight but that's what i draw from. And it's not just Artoria; it's Mordred, D'aon, Astopho, almost all the gender bends can be interpreted in this way that their gender is important to them and you should pay attention to the Why (other than the real reason). As for the question of best women in all of anime i totally agree with everything you said in the video.
It also helps that someone's sex is determined by what sperm won in the end. In a parallel timeline, the other sperm might've won in the end and I could be a girl 😅

I think the issue is not just limited to female characters but characters in general written by Nasu and how he he focuses on creating internal conflicts in his characters that define who they are as people first and foremost than give them just another superficial external conflict like some war to win or enemy to defeat. For servants, the best part in Nasu's writing for me is how he makes them human with human struggles rather than treat them as merely bigger than life icons of heroism that they are typically seen as. Tomoe Gozen is my favorite example because Nasu made her better than her source material (Tale of Heike) where she was just a female who was skilled in war and that's it. FGO uses her half-blood nature to great effect by showing how Yoshinaka's kindness and love made her such a kind and heroic person who still holds on to her noble values even as a servant despite what happened to her in life while also making Yoshinaka look good for something human other than just giving trauma to the Taira in Kurikara Pass. Also, I think this is why a lot of people, including myself, were disappointed at how Jeanne was handled in Apocrypha because she appears as the antithesis of how Nasu treats servants and her romance with Sieg adds nothing of value (aside from casual self-insert anime watchers enjoying their usual waifu scopophilia).
I'm curious what you mean by well-written because I've seen a lot of people mistake character is a power or relevancy to plot for quality of writing personally for me I would define a well-written character has any character that makes the story better or more interesting rather than their relevancy to the story. Not to say that nasu does not write well written female characters I just wanted to talk about an interesting trend I've noticed.
Tbh, i never truly care about the gender of the Nasu Cast until you say this. They just that good, i never pay attention of the Characters are Male or Female. They are just that good and interesting, it is only on the end of the story that i finally pay attention. Nasu really is the GOAT.
The Monogatari female cast are the ones I can think of from the top of my head that definitely rival Nasu’s female characters when it comes to how well-written they are. While the series is on the weirder side, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

I love Nasu's characters, especially his female leads, but I will say Masamune Shirow wrote at least comparable characters. Deunan Knute in Appleseed, Matoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell to name a couple. He was an earlier example, when female leads in Anime weren't as common and, he was arguably not as successful beyond GitS but he must be mentioned here.

One series that I would say could stand up to Nasu's female characters would be the Land of the Lustrous. It is the only series that has female characters that could overpower the numbers of Nasu's characters with the sheer brilliance that they are written with. While the gems don't technically have gender, they have a feminine appearance and the anime uses female voice actresses, so I think it counts.
Honestly I would argue that even if we don’t add all the characters together and just compare them 1 to 1 Nasu Is still on top just cause of his great heroines like Shiki and Aoko which are great characters alone
With this subject like the Fujimaru vs Shirou discussion. Some people may say Fujimaru is more developed and all that, but brother Fujimaru has 10 years of development. Nasu has so many projects. I personally think Witch hat atelier cast of women is amazing. I think it’s on par or may be better than some of Nasu’s women. However, witch hat atelier only has one series. Is it fair to say Nasu is a better because of just numbers? The same could be said with Nana, revolutionary girl Utena, etc. They’re all great, but Nasu has more work. Idk if I’m getting my point across correctly, because I wholeheartedly agree that Nasu in up there atp, but I also feel like it’s not a fair comparison if we’re going throw the numbers argument in there. Because of course in that aspect he will beat out most series just off being in the game for that long.
This is definitely a fair argument to make its not inherently equal terms to compare a single series to the conglomeration of many many series. Me personally the nasuverse is by far my favorite media in fiction but my favorite female character is actually Violet Evergarden and I think that her singular character is better then any singular nasuverse female but the sheer amount of fantastic females in the nasuverse would lead me to agree that it has a better overall cast. I think it would be more fair to compare the pinnacle of the writing and the consistency as two seperate comparisons. Otherwise the argument that length of a series and the amount of content could be applied to basically any aspect of writing.

I don't even think that saying that they're great characters that happen to be female is even valid a lot of the time look at saber, rin and sakura, all of them have something that ties them to their gender but it doesn't hold back their quality. I think if Nasu goes band for band against another author for the quantity of good to great characters he'll probably come out on top strictly by how many works he has. And I don't think that it's unfair bc there's been other authors that have had the time to make as much stuff as him and either haven't or haven't focused on female characters as much. The only ones I think are the authors of these light novel series that go on forever like index's writer and re: zero's
Not a fan of genderbend but Nasu majes it work cause he does it right the fact there is never a huge relevancy if its not address in the plot or an element that overshadows over the characters development not like western media of female is the only needed solution to all problems marry sue f men type characters. Thats what I love of a writer when they make great characters first and make things like sex and ethnicity second.
Nasu's female characters are great and generally well written, BUT I do think it's important to recognize that there are some weird instances of sexualization that you don't see with the male characters. There's weird sexualization involving several of the female characters that is only sometimes necessary for the plot and is often more regressive than anything. Look at the worms, look at the prevalence of SA, look at the weird loli kissing scenes in Fate/Kaleid. These aren't all Nasu I suppose, but Fate overall. Also, I'm not sure if this is present in the original works to the same degree or just in the Ufotable adaptations, but look at how frequently (and in wildly vivid detail) female characters are strangled. It's really uncomfortable; it happens in F/Z with Iri and Kiritsugu, in UBW with Souichirou and Saber, and in KnK.
@@celestialsoldier622 I don’t think sexualization of female characters is inherently bad, especially if it contributes to character growth or reflects an important trait of this character. The first bad example I can think of is the way Saber is handled after getting kidnapped by Caster in UBW (at least in the Ufotable adaptation, it’s been a hot second since I read the VN). Her being bent over in a dress and tied up while having pretty much no lines doesn’t really add to her character. I suppose Caster is humiliating her, or maybe it shows Saber’s resilience in not giving into command spells? However, to me, it feels more gratuitous and fanservice-y than anything, and her character feels uninteresting through that whole arc. Things like that don’t really happen to male characters that I know of (please feel free to give me counter-examples, I’d be super interested in being proven wrong); when Miyuverse Shirou is found imprisoned in Fate/Kaleid Liner, he’s just in a generic cell; he’s not being tortured with worms that sexually violate him or being strangled with uncomfortable detail by the villain (like someone in production really has a thing for women being choked; it happens so much) . Some of these instances of sexualization are huge parts of character motivations and backgrounds - Sakura, for example. I do think it’s important to just be aware of the difference in the way these characters are treated by the writersz Idk, I’d love to hear your counter-take.

I think when you say better characters it depends on context because if you see a character grow struggle lose so much develop and develop a mental fortitude sharp as steel i think there are some amazing writers out there kubo it just depends kazuma kamachii who does masterful work whether its date a live kouichi tachibana its really hard this is light novel based so if you havent read the novels the comparisons sakura reminding me of misaka mikoto at times because of the inner conflicts though misaka is more about being powerless and wanting to destroy all evil her insecurities unable to control her power turning into misaka 5.2 seeing thousands of clones made by her dna being destroyed where as sakura kind of is more chaotic given her nature i feel like sakura kind of just snaps mentally through all shes been through and would nuke the verse if she got mad enough given she is BB its definitely not a threat Or you could say in dal case seeing the person you love get impaled or die 200 times and only to love them from a distance like kurumi its really hard but this is purely opinions of just examples what makes good characters i would love more content for arcueid seeing the manga fully adapted as well as rin maybe getting a independent route to grow and machure maybe to find a artifact or something or possibly to reach the route or possibly seeing luvia join to help out I think it just depends if it's about character numbers fgo wins I don't think outside of index or railgun many series with that many heriones
Before noelle or nobara from black clover or jjk nasu probably wrote the best female characters. Noelle us brilliantly wrote and nobara is a perfect new age shonen female character. Personally I think noelle silva is the best written female character in modern shonen
The thing with Oda is that One Piece is generally just a fun manga, sure there's depth in some parts but, it's mostly a fun adventurers, and we don't venture too deeply in characterization, especially the females who lose their importance after their arcs are concluded.

(I'm only stating my oipnion here) Dunno about Nasu having the best female in anime, first because well there is a lot of anime and no matter wich category you're talking about it's almost always sure there is a series even if lesser known that will surpass it. Also, writting is not entirely objectif as it's not a quantifiable thing, for example there isn't a clear cut for who between Tohno and shirou is the best writtten and opinion on it might diverge between people. Also as i'm writting i'm halfway through the video but the arguments that some anime might have as good female character but not as many good character isn't really a great point, quality =/= quantity, and if we are viewing things in their entire cast is pretty much a point against the nasuverse since a lot of the new female characters come from FGO wich put less care in its writting, most of the well developped character in it were already well developped before in previous installements. About lb 6 characters, yes there are really good compared to most FGO oc servants point of view, but by considering this as a standalone series it's good not awesome, Sith (and Beryl) were done poorly by the story, despite the mysteries surrounding her, Melusine was pretty bland for most of the story up to the end where they drop her developpement in the last few chapters, mostly in the scene where she kill her mistress, Gareth was okay, Castoria, Morgan and Barghest were good. Type Moon is a huge instalement, yes but not everything in it is written by Nasu and i've seen people (not the creator of the video) mentionning characters that were not written by Nasu unless they are talking about the Nasuverse in general and in that case putting apocrypha's female cast on the same level as OG Fate hurt the overall level. Furthermore, a lot of people tend to confound quality of writting and likabilty, ex: Rachel from ToG she is a very well written characters but was written specificaly to be hated. On the other side, a character can be likable even if they are not that well written, ex: I have seen many people liking Asuna from SAO. Finally, sorry for the long post, im not trying to say that Nasu does not make very good female characters, in fact Arcueid would not be one of my all time favorite character otherwise, just that saying that he make the best female characters is a bit of a strech. The argument's base makes no sense. The roster doesn't matter. If you write 1 female character, but she's better written than every other one. She's the best period. It's not a numbers game. Saki has better written females as well and more of them. Every main character literally is a girl. There's over 100 of them. They take the time to put a backstory for every single one of them though. They don't even go that deep into any one of them, but what they got for every character is genius. They show you their story at the perfect time every single time too. Over 48 times of doing this. This anime ended Gonzo because they quit just to keep it going. Sure Gonzo is still around, but they don't have a fraction of the talent that quit to go to Studio Gokumi. Which is a studio that specializes in writing female characters almost exclusively. I think the problem isn't really that they don't exist. It's that they aren't mainstream shounen that everyone watches. Which I don't even consider most of those of even being anime to begin with. Fate can count, DB series can count, Fairy Tail, and My Hero Academia. However, I cannot agree that Jojo is the same as these. Jojo basically created their own style of art that isn't really anime. Black Clover is definitely not at the same quality of these. These are just a few examples btw, what I categorize them depends on a case by case basis. Most anime that write good female characters are not mainstream. I can say that Type Moon got the best written girls for an action series, but there are more genres that put a bigger focus on story. They aren't all as interesting per say because some of them follow the rules of real life and don't have the same fantasy elements. At the same time Fate isn't particularly well written in general. Their females are not separate from this either. I would say that they are well written in the aspect that they have a clear purpose, act like women should, and are fun as characters. However, if any other talented studio got the story they probably could have done it better. The problem is probably not while maintaining the fanservice and the parts that make the series good to begin with. Only like 4 other studios could probably manage that.

I haven't seen Mushoku but from what I seen of some short clips of the anime, they really like sexualizing female characters to the brim. As much as I hate some of the female characters in FGO (most of the time it's the lolis/only exists for fan-service), I've yet to see a female character with an extremely badass design (Draco) or having a great story (Castoria) in a another anime.

He does not, no. There's a massive amount of other extremely well written female characters out there (in anime, manga, novels, etc). Arknights, for example (another gacha) has some extremely well written female characters and that's just one instance. It's not a knock against Nasu, it's just one of those things. He's a decent writer who can mix history and fiction in an interesting way, but he has a hard time with consistency and engagement.
No. I'd put Nasu beneath an actual female author or mangaka anyday of the week. As a male author, he's fine but has weaknesses like most male authors will. Could be better, but it's for the most part nowhere near as bad as it could be.

Going off the characters on the collage, I'm only familiar with the Fate cast. And I don't care for either Illya or Saber as characters or the shit they go through. Nasu's writing for them doesn't do it for me, same for characters like Morgan or Sith. Will say he got me with Barghest and Castoria, I felt really bad for both of them for all the shit they went through in that godforsaken hellhole we call Faerie Britain
Nasu doesn't even have good characters let alone good female characters. Urobutcher struck way more gold with the Madoka girls than anything Nasu did with his girls. All his female characters did were become icons to coomers and coomers only. Want my take something like Symphogear, Nanoha, Shy, Precure, etc have better females if you looking for them in action series. At least they aren't 2nd fiddle to a bum male protag and get to do actually show actual competency.

One series that I would say could stand up to Nasu's female characters would be the Land of the Lustrous. It is the only series that has female characters that could overpower the numbers of Nasu's characters with the sheer brilliance that they are written with. While the gems don't technically have gender, they have a feminine appearance and the anime uses female voice actresses, so I think it counts.

With this subject like the Fujimaru vs Shirou discussion. Some people may say Fujimaru is more developed and all that, but brother Fujimaru has 10 years of development. Nasu has so many projects. I personally think Witch hat atelier cast of women is amazing. I think it’s on par or may be better than some of Nasu’s women. However, witch hat atelier only has one series. Is it fair to say Nasu is a better because of just numbers? The same could be said with Nana, revolutionary girl Utena, etc. They’re all great, but Nasu has more work. Idk if I’m getting my point across correctly, because I wholeheartedly agree that Nasu in up there atp, but I also feel like it’s not a fair comparison if we’re going throw the numbers argument in there. Because of course in that aspect he will beat out most series just off being in the game for that long.
This is definitely a fair argument to make its not inherently equal terms to compare a single series to the conglomeration of many many series. Me personally the nasuverse is by far my favorite media in fiction but my favorite female character is actually Violet Evergarden and I think that her singular character is better then any singular nasuverse female but the sheer amount of fantastic females in the nasuverse would lead me to agree that it has a better overall cast. I think it would be more fair to compare the pinnacle of the writing and the consistency as two seperate comparisons. Otherwise the argument that length of a series and the amount of content could be applied to basically any aspect of writing.

I don't even think that saying that they're great characters that happen to be female is even valid a lot of the time look at saber, rin and sakura, all of them have something that ties them to their gender but it doesn't hold back their quality. I think if Nasu goes band for band against another author for the quantity of good to great characters he'll probably come out on top strictly by how many works he has. And I don't think that it's unfair bc there's been other authors that have had the time to make as much stuff as him and either haven't or haven't focused on female characters as much. The only ones I think are the authors of these light novel series that go on forever like index's writer and re: zero's

Nasu's female characters are great and generally well written, BUT I do think it's important to recognize that there are some weird instances of sexualization that you don't see with the male characters. There's weird sexualization involving several of the female characters that is only sometimes necessary for the plot and is often more regressive than anything. Look at the worms, look at the prevalence of SA, look at the weird loli kissing scenes in Fate/Kaleid. These aren't all Nasu I suppose, but Fate overall.
Also, I'm not sure if this is present in the original works to the same degree or just in the Ufotable adaptations, but look at how frequently (and in wildly vivid detail) female characters are strangled. It's really uncomfortable; it happens in F/Z with Iri and Kiritsugu, in UBW with Souichirou and Saber, and in KnK.
You're under the false presumption that sexualization of women is inherently wrong and that is ruins their character.

The first bad example I can think of is the way Saber is handled after getting kidnapped by Caster in UBW (at least in the Ufotable adaptation, it’s been a hot second since I read the VN). Her being bent over in a dress and tied up while having pretty much no lines doesn’t really add to her character. I suppose Caster is humiliating her, or maybe it shows Saber’s resilience in not giving into command spells? However, to me, it feels more gratuitous and fanservice-y than anything, and her character feels uninteresting through that whole arc. Things like that don’t really happen to male characters that I know of (please feel free to give me counter-examples, I’d be super interested in being proven wrong); when Miyuverse Shirou is found imprisoned in Fate/Kaleid Liner, he’s just in a generic cell; he’s not being tortured with worms that sexually violate him or being strangled with uncomfortable detail by the villain (like someone in production really has a thing for women being choked; it happens so much) .
Some of these instances of sexualization are huge parts of character motivations and backgrounds - Sakura, for example. I do think it’s important to just be aware of the difference in the way these characters are treated by the writersz

The thing with Oda is that One Piece is generally just a fun manga, sure there's depth in some parts but, it's mostly a fun adventurers, and we don't venture too deeply in characterization, especially the females who lose their importance after their arcs are concluded.

Honestly the only author that comes close is like romeo tanaka with his work in my opinion.
(I'm only stating my oipnion here) Dunno about Nasu having the best female in anime, first because well there is a lot of anime and no matter wich category you're talking about it's almost always sure there is a series even if lesser known that will surpass it. Also, writting is not entirely objectif as it's not a quantifiable thing, for example there isn't a clear cut for who between Tohno and shirou is the best writtten and opinion on it might diverge between people.
Also as i'm writting i'm halfway through the video but the arguments that some anime might have as good female character but not as many good character isn't really a great point, quality =/= quantity, and if we are viewing things in their entire cast is pretty much a point against the nasuverse since a lot of the new female characters come from FGO wich put less care in its writting, most of the well developped character in it were already well developped before in previous installements. About lb 6 characters, yes there are really good compared to most FGO oc servants point of view, but by considering this as a standalone series it's good not awesome, Sith (and Beryl) were done poorly by the story, despite the mysteries surrounding her, Melusine was pretty bland for most of the story up to the end where they drop her developpement in the last few chapters, mostly in the scene where she kill her mistress, Gareth was okay, Castoria, Morgan and Barghest were good.
Type Moon is a huge instalement, yes but not everything in it is written by Nasu and i've seen people (not the creator of the video) mentionning characters that were not written by Nasu unless they are talking about the Nasuverse in general and in that case putting apocrypha's female cast on the same level as OG Fate hurt the overall level.
Furthermore, a lot of people tend to confound quality of writting and likabilty, ex: Rachel from ToG she is a very well written characters but was written specificaly to be hated. On the other side, a character can be likable even if they are not that well written, ex: I have seen many people liking Asuna from SAO.
Finally, sorry for the long post, im not trying to say that Nasu does not make very good female characters, in fact Arcueid would not be one of my all time favorite character otherwise, just that saying that he make the best female characters is a bit of a strech.

The argument's base makes no sense. The roster doesn't matter. If you write 1 female character, but she's better written than every other one. She's the best period. It's not a numbers game.
Saki has better written females as well and more of them. Every main character literally is a girl. There's over 100 of them. They take the time to put a backstory for every single one of them though. They don't even go that deep into any one of them, but what they got for every character is genius. They show you their story at the perfect time every single time too. Over 48 times of doing this. This anime ended Gonzo because they quit just to keep it going. Sure Gonzo is still around, but they don't have a fraction of the talent that quit to go to Studio Gokumi. Which is a studio that specializes in writing female characters almost exclusively.
I think the problem isn't really that they don't exist. It's that they aren't mainstream shounen that everyone watches. Which I don't even consider most of those of even being anime to begin with. Fate can count, DB series can count, Fairy Tail, and My Hero Academia. However, I cannot agree that Jojo is the same as these. Jojo basically created their own style of art that isn't really anime. Black Clover is definitely not at the same quality of these. These are just a few examples btw, what I categorize them depends on a case by case basis.
Most anime that write good female characters are not mainstream. I can say that Type Moon got the best written girls for an action series, but there are more genres that put a bigger focus on story. They aren't all as interesting per say because some of them follow the rules of real life and don't have the same fantasy elements. At the same time Fate isn't particularly well written in general. Their females are not separate from this either. I would say that they are well written in the aspect that they have a clear purpose, act like women should, and are fun as characters. However, if any other talented studio got the story they probably could have done it better. The problem is probably not while maintaining the fanservice and the parts that make the series good to begin with. Only like 4 other studios could probably manage that.

I haven't seen Mushoku but from what I seen of some short clips of the anime, they really like sexualizing female characters to the brim. As much as I hate some of the female characters in FGO (most of the time it's the lolis/only exists for fan-service), I've yet to see a female character with an extremely badass design (Draco) or having a great story (Castoria) in a another anime.

He does not, no. There's a massive amount of other extremely well written female characters out there (in anime, manga, novels, etc). Arknights, for example (another gacha) has some extremely well written female characters and that's just one instance. It's not a knock against Nasu, it's just one of those things. He's a decent writer who can mix history and fiction in an interesting way, but he has a hard time with consistency and engagement.
