      It will definitely do that, but since I've been chopping my stalks, I have very little problem with it. Glad you enjoy the Olivers. I know I do! Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I spent hrs upon hrs running a 4 row stalk chopper behind the 1959 oliver 880 diesel that I have redone now. Grandpa was a stickler. He wanted ever stalk to be cut so him and dad could cover the fields with manure and plow everything under. Great video Charlie I enjoy everyone you post

    Love the video. I had a really hard time convincing my Grandpa to try disking down corn stalks in the fall. He always thought it was a waste of gas. I printed off articles about errosion and getting the stalks in the ground to the bugs to break down. We tried it one year, the next spring we disked it again and planted directly into it the Oats and grass seed/alfalfa. The stocks were soft enough the planted cut right through it. The field was still smooth and we saved having to plow in the spring before planting the oats. We had a 5yr rotation. 1st year corn, then oats the second. 3 years of alfalfa followed and back to corn. Worked very well for our bottle calves/ steer raising operation.

    I was thinking of getting a stalk chopper, then a friend told how that fall he had chopped his, then a wind storm came along and gave all his organic matter to the neighbors. His field was bare except the nub of stalk above the roots. I like discing for some of the same reasons as you. It breaks it up, but also pins it down.

      Thanks for your kind words. I know that farmers watching will know what's going on, but I try to explain for the benefit of the non-farmers and those who might not be familiar with whatever I'm doing in a video.

      Too bad you couldn’t have found a 1750 or 1755 mfwa. Then you could have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately I don’t think they’re the easiest to come by.

    Great video. If you ever have time, perhaps you could do a video on how well these gas tractor engines hold up year over year under a working loads, typical issues and tune up intervals.

    I have the 13 foot version of that disk. We bought it 30 years ago.
    I don't know if its standard or a configuration option but mine is spaced 9 inches on the front and 7 inches on the back. Does a nice job chopping stalks but would help if they were a little bit heavier. Also needs new disks badly.
    Changing bearings is fun if you don't pay attention with it's 8 sided shaft, 6 sided bearing, and 4 sided disk. 😁😁

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had this AC disk for probably about 30 years. Have never needed to change bearings yet, but glad you pointed out some of the things to look out for. It's my back-up disk now, to my 15 foot Krause rock flex. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done both, too, but I seem to favor the discing just because of the incorporation into the soil and not as hard on the rotary mower.

    I got into a debate with a new age young farmer on here about a week ago. He was Mr. Notill. No matter what I said, he practically hyperventilated whenever I mentioned ANY kind of tillage. I brought up different climates, soil types, weed resistance, heavy crop trash. Nope. No till was the ONLY way to go, and I think if it were up to him, he’d like to see you punished and have your farm taken away if you tilled so much as your garden. I finally gave up, he HAD to have the last word.

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't try to debate with people like that. You'll never change his mind. I feel he has the right to do what he wants on his farm, but I have just as much right on my farm to do it my way, which I do. I think there are lots of benefits to conventional tillage and that's why I will continue to do it. Any one who doesn't like it, doesn't have to. I don't have control of what they think and I won't lose sleep over it.Thanks for watching and commenting.
