The best musicians usually overthink their music too much and the most untalented people release terrible music, but do it consistently and end up blowing up on social media.

I decided about 3 years ago to stop thinking that every project needed to be doing something extra to try to impress the listener. I realised that I was actually trying to impress other producers and not the average listener who dont care about the complexity or fancy crap. We can cram are music full of effects and change ups and loose or dilutes the original vibe because the melody or mood gets disrupted. I dont want to listen to music with 50 different Flex beat type effects.

i kind of pushed myself yesterday by messaging a friend who uses my comedy tunes in his videos, and telling him i would be sending a ttrack that night and it deffenatly got me to finnish the tune and send it, sometimes i ponder over tunes for months. the 'Deadline' is a good tool to push finnishing stuff.all the best mate.

I can really relate to this.
I’m just about to release my first song EVER… and I feel so scared pushing past my usual perfectionism. I probably shouldn’t bring age into it, but I’m in my 30’s now and it’s taken me a very long time to get to a stage where I’m feeling ready - to be vulnerable - and express myself musically in the world. I’m scared, but I’m ready!
Thanks for this interesting video. It’s a reminder to keep things in perspective. This is my first song and I’m proud of it. It’s just a song… and it’s not “just” a song to me. I’m looking forward to getting it out there now, so I can start focussing on the next creative project!

'Quantity breeds quality'. I completely agree. I've got so much better at every part of producing music, by just doing exactly that - producing LOTS of music. Lots of tracks I made are average, garbage, OK, pretty good, terrible or just bland. Then with those skills and practice under my belt sometimes inspiration strikes, or I get luck, or I am focused and working really hard - and it all comes together for a single piece here or there. Without making LOTS of music, I couldn't have those one or two pieces I'm super happy with.
EDIT: OH... and I make sure I release or publish all of those 'ok, bland or pretty good' tracks too - because having the practice at making artwork, publishing and fielding comments and responses is important too. Also, I'm not the best judge of my own music. One or two tracks I wasn't overjoyed with actually landed very well with listeners... go figure! ✨🪐

hehe...Im now in my 40's and I "started" 3 years ago experimenting music production when I still was studying beside working. That was when I bought Ableton ( as a student beause it was cheaper ;-) ). Soon I started and finished a tech house track and even if it was not perfect it was the only one track I ever finished (not released)! If I hear it today it sounds good to me. But what I feel is that the quality (and sound selection) of my ideas is getting better, but no further track finished. I guess I have and want to apply more work into it ( music production)

    Welcome back!
Amazing video and fantastic content, always straight to the point and, for me, incredibly relevant.
I've been stuck in this "my track is not good enough" for 2 years, believe or not, while I swapped countless gear, made lots of changes, re-made the track from scratch and so on.
In my mind, my issue is that once I put out my work, if it's not good I've automatically lost all of those listeners because they'll associate my name with "crap music".
I know it's incredibly stupid for me, especially because it's my first track and I'm an absolute no one who will be lucky if I'll ever get 100 people to listen to my piece of music.
I'm just going to wrap it up and go on, your video was highly motivational for me and it has really made me think about what I've been doing and what I *should* have been doing.
At least, now I know what I *will* be doing in the future!
Thanks and looking forward more videos!

Thanks. I really needed this video.
I've been sitting on a lot of 'unfinished' tracks for years in the hopes that I can record, mix, and master them properly (either through help from other experienced producers or by leveling up). This only led to a decline in my creativity, to the extent that I stopped enjoying making music altogether. I think it's time to rid myself of this ghost and start afresh with a new mindset.

I'm often really afraid of other's perceptions (which isn't a very good fit for a creator in all honestly xD), but I've only now just started to follow a consistent release schedule and a (vague) brand and I'm finding it to be super helpful with making more and fearing less.
Here's to getting out of our heads and into other people's ears!

Hi greetings from Mexico city (I've been following your channel approximately a year ago, i'm really grateful for your content)
I started my journey in music in 2018, releasing an album for me (at the time) it was really interesting melody and harmony-wise, but at the performance and production level was complete and total shit, I re-recorded it in 2019 and it was "kinda good" but the vocal effort it was shit (again, haha) so one of my best friends told me: "just forget about it, write something new" and I did it, and by may 2020 I had another 18 new songs that I released in a "quasi-conceptual" way, I thought that it was the most beautiful thing that I've ever recorded, and I was wrong, but I just kept on recording new songs and by almost one and a half year after that second album I released another album that it was significantly better but at the time of its release I had (and I still have) a lot of problems (monetary problems, mental health issues and even an unfair lawsuit, (I won)) and formy stupid "perfectionism" I decided to take those original sessions and re-record them till they were perfect, this new "problem" it really affect me in a lot of ways to the point that I'm not recording nothing for the fact that these tracks that I'm doing they imply an effort, and that effort isn't enough even to earn the money to "pay" the equipment that I bought with a lot off efforts, so I'm pretty terrified about the future and everything basically

Welcome back. Very thoughtful observations that come from your wisdom of experience. Perfectionism is often the antithesis of the creative process, unless you’re one of those very rare birds who actually are able to turn perfectionism in itself into an art form; Steely Dan’s studio obsessions and penchant for doing hundreds of takes per track comes to mind. But when you think of the great music, from Charlie Parker improvisations to Hendrix, Dylan and electronic artists like Aphex Twin, it’s often imbued with flaw and imperfection, which makes it unique and quite special. Great artists understand the importance of inspiration and seizing the essence of an idea, and they understand that you can easily drive that essence into oblivion by overthinking it. We’ve all experienced degrees of the thing you talk about; I’ve literally ruined some really good creative essence by mixing, remixing, re-recording and re-doing it to death. I’m much more inclined to listen to my creative gut feeling now.

I struggle with the question of wether or not it even matters if I release anything when there’s so much music out there already which bleeds into perfectionism. If it touches one person, maybe that’s worth it, even though it’s not perfect.

I can't for my life whip up any interest into engineering/production, my main skill is being a player and composer, and to get something beyond a "sketch" with often a quite comprehensive arrangement, is never happening, can't be arsed. Ideally I need to find a mixing engineer aficionado as creative partner.

Totally feel your point about being an artist rather than an educator. I’m thinking about this a lot as well recently. As much as I love educating I also really want to focus on releasing music and playing some live sets this year. And sometimes there is not enough time for both sides so I decided to focus more on the artist side and when I discover things through that, I share them with others. Thanks for another great video and keep up the great music. 💚

Great Video Mate :) I do have these moments sometimes as it's hard to get to know when to stop adding to a track or fixing this or that. I don't have that much of a perfectionism though (luckily or not) and I have released some not-so-great tracks but as you say...I'm still learning so it's ok. I have a different question though. They say that when you look back on your tracks from couple years ago you should feel a bit of a cringe? Because as music producer progresses then the old stuff seems amateurish. But what if I have a remix I have done like a year ago and after another 5 tracks released I still come back to it thinking "well that was a good mix, I'm not sure if I can do something as good again?" Would that mean I haven't learn too much since then? Cheers 🤘😎

I believe that quantity leads to quality better than just focusing on quality. The great masters would never have gotten around creating their masterpieces if they hadn't done shitload of all kinds of stuff before those, most of which nobody really cares because some of them sucked. I have been focusing on catalogue like thinking in the past few years and tried to dish out as much music as possible as efficiently as possible just focusing on "what's good enough", and nothing have given me better growth and pleasure than that. I sincerely recommend going all out

Thank you so much. I think that making _tracks_ is kind of like making TH-cam videos - _the track_ isn't always the entirety of the song, the same way that a TH-cam video can't always cover the entirety of a subject. It might take many TH-cam videos to do that, the same way that tracks collected over time can become 1 or 2 songs, etc.
    Thanks again.

I used to DJ through the 90’s and I saw little success. It would have been a more successful pursuit if I had not been such a perfectionist. Not releasing mix tapes because i dropped a beat stifled my progress for sure. I am now in my early 50’s and I am in my third year of music production. What you have said about quantity creates quality makes a lot of sense. Every time a start a project I learn something new, as well as using the lessons learnt from the last project. My question is about process do you look for an idea from something you have heard? or are you looking for that truly original spark? And then do you have a set approach to building the track or do you just let it lead you. i.e. build your melody first or your harmonic progression. Just a thought would love to hear your feedback thanks Pat

Me too, I've only been producing music for just under a year, but I've wanted to release my first song for a long time. I have also tested many genres, but I have long since discovered my favorite genre. I produce great melodies and drums but often have a hard time with the arrangement. What's really bad with me is that I'm already bored with the melody of a song the next day. And that even though I really loved it the first few times I heard it and it was very emotional for me. I really need to change my mindset! What genre do you produce?

What Mredollo says in the video about perfectionism is most likely the cause stifling progress and keeping us both from learning good enough arrangement skills to finish tracks.
