I always remember having oddly fond memories for the type II in SH3. I usually started a new career with them and took advantage to early war blind escorts to do stupid things. Like sneaking into ports to blow up docked ships. One time even snuck a type IID into Loch Ewe and sank one of the Nelson class Batleships there.
I found out about your channel yesterday, and I just started watching this series. I can safely say this is one of the (if not THE) comfiest channels on TH-cam. At 11:40 you can see a clever trick where the sea is constructed from multiple planes with their geometry being manipulated by procedural algorithms to produce wave/surf-like displacement, looking like there is a seperate foam layer or multiple layers blending together to produce a more natural-looking seascape. Natural looking water is actually fairly tricky to make right and in a game where you're usually surrounded by that water I imagine they went to great lengths to tune it so it looks good for most sea conditions. If you wanted to learn how to make good video game water you could learn a bunch from dissecting this game and others like it.

Radar is coming in now. So it will soon be the great doom. Around august '43 is when many crews sorta just... dissappear. That by the end of the War only something like 25% of all sub crews survived. So if he is to die... it'll be the next patrol after the current one, most likely.
Just found your channel and I'm very much looking forward to binge watching this series and others, your commentary is very entertaining but also relaxing, feels like i'm right there with you every step. thankyou for content!
Only just had your video pop up in utube recomendations at episode 51! So I went to your page and I'm starting at ep 1 - that's going to be quite a binge watch and it'll probably take me a couple of weeks to catch up. In the meantime - don't die!

Tja, es wird sicher eine grossartige Kampagne Herr Kaleun!
Awesome. This looks like a really good start. Looking forwards to see you being promoted to a VII, though. Also, you might want to do something about that port propeller at 5:05... That can't be healthy for the boat 😁

Happy to have found this series! I have fond memories of Silent Hunter III. I also remember starting with a Type IIA in 1939. But the short range was so annoying, with BdU sending me to patrol off northern Scotland. I experimented a lot with different engine settings to find the most fuel efficient setting for maximum range - I think I found it to be with only 1 engine running at standard speed, without recharging batteries. What's your most efficient setting?
Dude you just landed a new sub! Its criminal that you have soo little! Im glad I found out your channel as Im never able to fully enjoy SH3 with mods due to various reasons (most common is installation ones and not having the same result as in the videos). Hello!Just found your channel and this series!Great narration!Btw as much as i know the German U boots had a Rcognition book on board! As much as i know it was the Lloyd Register list with all registered freighters on duty during the time and was always updated when possible! And it included silhouettes of the ships!Another btw ..where you from? You sound German!
They had a ship register, but silhouette cutouts were only available for a few selected ships (think Passanger liners, certain huge tankers and of course warships). The vast majority of merchants were build according to their intended purpose all over the world. Having drawings for all of them would require a small library of thick books :D If the germans were relying on such target information, it would have been very easy for the Allies to change the look of the ships.
I am living vicariously via your LP. ALEX v1.52 is best UBoat compilation I have ever seen. Before that AOD(DOS). If you have never seen that, I can put a build together for you with all patches and expansions. The DOS version is much better than CAOD. I had many tense moments with it. In terms of escorts hunting/escape, it may have more intensity then SH3/GWX/ALEX. I've retired from SH3 for time. I am too old to invest 2-3 days in patrolling without finding a convoy. I am back to ground combat at the moment where action is always around the corner. This is why is asked for GWX map this morning. If you know where they coded the convoys, you are going to have much more interesting war. Going to sink the Royal Oak? After that the Frauleins will be lining up for a shot with the uber-mensch Kaleun. (How good is your English. Get the pun?)
And so it begins! :) I will watch a bit. I had changed my play style to go submerged at night or day time zero visibility. I found at AHEAD SLOW, 12 hours under only requires 10 minutes to ventilate the boat (that is enough to time to surface with a sound contact; refresh air/dive). 12 hours ahead slow takes about 12-13% battery, and requires about 4 hours recharge (no snorkel yet). I was having great fun hunting in the shallows around UK (only turning on the ASDIC mod in 200M of water or less). BTW, 14 hours was around the longest you can do without tapping into your compressed 02. I agree this will probably be a more exciting video series than CW-EPIC, for a single class the play gets very repetitive. I wish you luck to be alive in 45! :) AKA MarkShot
@@Tonci87 The problem with UBoat sims to survive, you have to go to the far reaches to hunt the lone merchants. This makes a lot of sense, but all the game play excitement are the convoys. So, if you play total realism and don't pick your own patrols, you will have fun but die. If you pick Africa and South America, you may just live if you survive your transits. What makes Das Boot excellent is he survives patrol and dies in port. Good luck, Herr Kaleun Tonci!
Oh man i just got really into cold waters a few days ago based off your other series. now you tell me this is available for totally not free I really enjoyed the newer uboat game but it felt more like Das Boot: The Game than a sub sim
Yeah by this point I doubt that U-Boat will ever evolve to a true subsim. You can tell that the devs initially wanted to make a game about crew management in a confined space. I think they were a bit surprised that there was such a demand for a true new subsim.
I downloaded the latest version of the mod, but I don't see the same gauges. I don't have that AOB wheel and my stopwatch is the older looking version (doesn't have the colors or ship length). I remember this being part of Magui (I think) but I was told that the default game already has Magui interface. I see one mod that says "Magui 1366 X 768" but I don't have that resolution. Any ideas?
I can only imagine that something went wrong during the installation. make sure to follow the instructions carefully. If you still have issues, then describe them in the OneAlex Discord. I´m sure that we´ll figure it out.
I was planning to start another OneAlex modpack campaign for a long while now, but I am deterred from actually starting one because of the fragility and the bugginess of save game process and subsequent loading of a save.
@@Tonci87 The thing is, I was following those rules as much as I could, but somewhere west of Morocco my save became corrupted. Perhaps some ship or a plane I wasn't aware of was within 50 km of me.
@@RM97800 you can try reloading the save again...that has actually worked for some by trying to load the corrupt save again and then they miraculously got in. Also having multiple saves is key if the last save is corrupt, I also try to never save near land masses by at least 200kms out from them as they usually have air bases near them. Sorry about your lost saves though.
@@RM97800 That is why one of the rules is to never overwrite savegames, always make a new one. If one gets corrupted, you can revert to the previous one.
Do this mod make it easier to manage crew or you need still to manually move them around? I consider but this or SH 4. Which you think it's best for a newbie?
You can disable the crew management, but I feel it adds another layer of complexity that you need to consider. SH4 and SH3 are more or less equal whwn it comes to the skills you will need to learn as a new player.

Starting this series and I noticed you dont have one for SH5. Do you prefer 3 over 5 +WoS, and how would you compare the two? I might pick it up. Love your vids! Edit: I got to the end (;
How did you get the extra sheets in map and radio room? For example in 9:18 you have Prize, Sop, Convoy, Torpedo on the top. I don't have them with 1.52.
Those are part of the Just follow orders mod (gives you historical orders in regards to those topics). I have made a version that works with the OneAlex Edition and will release it soon.
Love the video excited to binge watch the series. Quick question did you use any additional mods that come with the install I.E negative buoyancy, Atlantic water etc?
This is a great series and I'm using your videos as a resources to play out my campaigns, but the only problem is I'm not having NO success with screenshots using CTRL - F11. Has anyone else experiencing this problem? And where is the emblem on the side of the conning tower sourced for this Type-II submarine?
You can find the Emblem in the Upgrade screen in between patrols. This is the Emblem of the first U-Boat flotilla. Usually your GPU software should have a way to take screenshots
By the way, have you played UBOAT? I have it, but have only taken it for brief spins. I see a lot of potential. It seems to have a broader scope than SH3, but less immersive where it really counts. What are your thoughts? (I have SubCommand, DangerousWaters, ColdWaters; but I love UBoat games since AOD[DOS] as I love the hunt and evasion.)
UBoat is just such a huge missed opportunity. A decent crew management game, but not a good subsim. The issue is that the devs never intended this to anything more but a Crew Management game in a WW2 submarine setting, and it really shows in many design decisions. Only during Early access did they realize that there is huge demand for a new and realistic Subsim, but it´s too late to change things that are fundamentally wrong with the game engine. They have also already put too much effort and resources into the initial design, to now turn around and make this a proper sim. That boat has sailed. Another mistake that they make is to not open the game to modding more. The Engine is Unity based, and Unity is great for mods (look at Kerbal Space program). But if you browse mods for the game you will not find many ambitious mods. I guess it´s difficult to mod. The AI is also pretty bad.
@@Tonci87 Being a retired software engineer, I clearly see your point. Late major changes are virtually impossible in a system build; at best, it is extremely expensive. This is why we begin projects with simply natural language design docs and mock ups. Such things are so much more mutable than code. Yesterday, after SH3, I went to walk through UBOAT. Yes, it is visually impressive. But I really don't care about minutia. This is why SubCommand and DangerousWaters can put you to sleep, because the whole scenario may be: DON'T BE COUNTER DETECTED. Exciting! I love trying to work my way getting past the screen. Wounding as many merchants as possible (since you can come back and pick them off later), and if you are really good, you may escape the hornets nest without detection; otherwise you are going to be picked up, but can you break contact? Or out last the hunters? So, many genres like grand strategy map painting appear in a million titles. But name me one other game with a flow of action like the Uboat hunt and escape??? That is why I love it. I stopped playing so much as I am old and just no longer have the real hours to patrol for a day or two finding nothing. When you get old enough, time becomes more valuable than money. Good hunting. I watched some episode #1, but fell asleep. :)
Oh snap a type 2! Forgive my ignorance if I am incorrect but was the type 2 essentially a coastal waters hunter? In so much that it lacked the range of its larger compatriots, not to say that it was exclusively relegated to coastal waters (would be quite hard work hunting freighters if that was case lol), just that it's where it tended to operate. Looking forward to this one!
Yes, you are right. The Type II could not be used in the Atlantic since it did not have the range. I´m basically operating at my maximum range in my current patrol (patrol 4)
What he said, and also, keep in mind WW2 subs in general weren't really "submarines" in the modern sense, they were surface ships with the capability to go under for short periods of time; so to operate during storms for great lengths is still difficult.
Gute Wahl SH 3 ist echt geil habe noch die Version auf CD von 2004 :) Empfehle die Living Silent Hunter Mod 2022. Hast du auch SH 5 getestet ? Gibts nen großen ModPack dazu (Wolves of Steel) dieser fugt viele Features dazu
I solved the one thing blocking One-Alex play ... sometimes you most save ... but you cannot as the game is bugged. Back with XP and older PC, I tried hibernating but it was not solid. But with WIN10 and my current system, it is rock solid. So, it means except for power failures, I never need abandon and encounter. IT IS TIME TO GO TO SEA!
@@Tonci87 Suppose you are on a long submerged convoy hunt that could go for hours. But you need to go out, and won't have a chance to finish for a day or so. Then, you can just keep SH3 running, and HIBERNATE your PC instead of shutdown. Works fantastic! If I meet the SAVE conditions, then I SAVE/EXIT and SHUTDOWN my PC.
I love how this is the first video to pop up when I searched for a SH3 series. I hit the jackpot! It appears I have a bit of catching up to do which is nice. I understand that this is a one life only challenge, but do you think you could survive the entire war without burning yourself out playing this? For the record I hope you make it to 1945, I love how you mix cinematic dialog with gameplay. Also, what country are you from? I hear a slight accent, but not entirely sure where.

looool 11:18 that guys face says it all!
And so it begins... I've been waiting for this. 🥳
Enjoy :)
AKA MarkShot
I doubt that I´ll make it to 45. It just gets too brutal past 43, but we´ll see
@@Tonci87 The problem with UBoat sims to survive, you have to go to the far reaches to hunt the lone merchants.
@@mahakleung6992 I´ll follow orders and go where they send me💀
That was a great episode thanks Tonci87 ;)
New to your channel, I love SH3 play troughs! I like your style of storytelling, I have to catch up on this series.
Great to see a SH3 series on this channel :)
You're awesome keep up the good work be safe out there have an awesome day
fantastic intro. Better than streaming. thank you
Oh man i just got really into cold waters a few days ago based off your other series. now you tell me this is available for totally not free
I really enjoyed the newer uboat game but it felt more like Das Boot: The Game than a sub sim
Yeah by this point I doubt that U-Boat will ever evolve to a true subsim. You can tell that the devs initially wanted to make a game about crew management in a confined space. I think they were a bit surprised that there was such a demand for a true new subsim.
@@Tonci87what do you think about the current version of uboat?
@@Njordin2010 It still needs a lot of work
@@Tonci87 and lots of mods :/ uboat expanded for example
good job, i will follow this journey!!!!
You're awesome keep up the good videos yes I would like to see more videos of these have an awesome day be safe out there
I downloaded the latest version of the mod, but I don't see the same gauges.
I´m sure that we´ll figure it out.
oh yeah. lets goooo!!! the onealex edition is awesome!
I was planning to start another OneAlex modpack campaign for a long while now, but I am deterred from actually starting one because of the fragility and the bugginess of save game process and subsequent loading of a save.
There are rules that you should follow for saving games. As long as you do that, you should be fine
I really like the merchant fleet mod, im recommending it if you want to do another series. especially since you are not using the recognition manual
I´m using it already :)
i used the map alot in this one, it made it easier
nice first episode. No idea where the brits found an armed freighter in the first week of the war, has to be a mod thing.

Starting this series and I noticed you dont have one for SH5. Do you prefer 3 over 5 +WoS, and how would you compare the two? I might pick it up. Love your vids!
Edit: I got to the end (;
When the dreams become to real 🤗🤗🤗 thank you
How did you get the extra sheets in map and radio room?
For example in 9:18 you have Prize, Sop, Convoy, Torpedo on the top.
I don't have them with 1.52.
Those are part of the Just follow orders mod (gives you historical orders in regards to those topics).
I have made a version that works with the OneAlex Edition and will release it soon.
This is most excellent!!
SH3 is the goat
Oh wow a Type 2 thats very very different!
really enjoying the series, thought i would come back here to ask do you use a voice command program?
No, I don´t
Love the video excited to binge watch the series. Quick question did you use any additional mods that come with the install I.E negative buoyancy, Atlantic water etc?
Yes, negative buoyancy, no u mark, Seafloor texture. On top of that Community units addon project and a personal edit of JFO
SHIII was always a superior game to SHV. Only the SHV graphics were better. So glad to see some branching out on the GWX mod
Guess I am in for a journey 😎
How´s it going? :D

What button do you press to close the interface/controls lile you do in your intro?

Your accent is ideal for story narration. I think you’ve found your niche.
@Tonci87: The playlist says there are 6 videos, but 3 are not available to me. Is this correct? :)
Thank you, I fixed it, those were the already deleted attempts to reupload Episode 1 when the TH-cam Server refused to process the video
@@Tonci87 Thx for clearing up and for the great series so far!
Can't wait until you get the U21
Excellent!
Great story telling.
Thank you
This is a great series and I'm using your videos as a resources to play out my campaigns, but the only problem is I'm not having NO success with screenshots using CTRL - F11.
Great video! Do you use all the realism options from the SH3commander also?
Of course :)
@@mahakleung6992 Yes on all points!
Well, people say I have a soothing voice. I bet you are not the first one to fall asleep :D
@@Tonci87 Thanks for confirming, also decided to give this great looking mod a try thanks to you. Have been really enjoying it so far!
Think a u-boat commander would take advantage of poor weather. Simular to how an infantry assualt group commander's would during bad weather.
Yes, but only to a degree. The Type II is a very small boat. If the waves are too high, it becomes impossible or at least unpractical to stay surfaced
What he said, and also, keep in mind WW2 subs in general weren't really "submarines" in the modern sense, they were surface ships with the capability to go under for short periods of time; so to operate during storms for great lengths is still difficult.
So amazing to see a narrated campaign, especially starting with a Type II! Are you planning to go on to the other types (eventually Type XXI)?
Absolutely, but this is a Dead is Dead campaign, so who knows how long we will survive
Gute Wahl SH 3 ist echt geil habe noch die Version auf CD von 2004 :) Empfehle die Living Silent Hunter Mod 2022. Hast du auch SH 5 getestet ? Gibts nen großen ModPack dazu (Wolves of Steel) dieser fugt viele Features dazu

Love the new series and OneAlex mod! The tool you have at about 27:10. How did you pull that up? I can't seem to find it.
Make sure that you select the Weapons Officer first, then the tool will be available
@@Tonci87 Thanks! That was it.
You should be able to save without issues as long as you follow the rules detailed in the manual....
@@mahakleung6992 Ah OK, I get what you mean, yeah hibernate can be very useful for such a situation
ah yeah sh3 in da house captain
I love how this is the first video to pop up when I searched for a SH3 series. I hit the jackpot! It appears I have a bit of catching up to do which is nice. I understand that this is a one life only challenge, but do you think you could survive the entire war without burning yourself out playing this? For the record I hope you make it to 1945, I love how you mix cinematic dialog with gameplay. Also, what country are you from? I hear a slight accent, but not entirely sure where.
Well, I´m a Croatian who grew up in Germany, so I have a slight German accent
@@Tonci87 as a german I actually thought you were german! but germanspeaking obviously
