Thanks Matt for the valuable advice. I have been using Starbond thin for a while which is really penetrating, the scales i produce will always have imperfections and that cures 99% of my problems when i grind down.
Hi Matt thanks for your time and effort. Water jet cutting I've got the same issue on 14C28N and 5160 cutting at a angle got no answer what's creating it. However Lazer cutting is perfect for both materials. Confused...
Maybe I need to look into having them laser cut then. In the past I haven’t ran into this issue much with the water jet thought that’s why I’m confused
Matt have you actually had breaking problems with magnacut? The evidence seems to be mounting that a) magnacut retains toughnessup through HRC 65 and B) edge retention is much better at 63+ than at 61. Hogue learned this. Do you prefer lower HRC because of workability or are you really seeing broken blades. Any edge will chip if dropped hard enough.
On your MagnaCut heatreatment do you put anything in the foil package to remove the O2? I have been using small pieces of wood to burn up the O2 but was think of not using anything. Also do you keep the patina on your knives from the treatment?
@@gentrycustomknives8008 I would agree you should get damn good results at 62.5, I wasn't trying to criticize, I am a newbie and learned a new bit of information and was sharing, Im sure as of right now you have forgotten more than I know, maybe in a few years and a shit ton more experience I can talk shop with you
Always enjoy your vids…..thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the video Matt, I like the laid back videos too it is good to see the planning process. I did not know star bond makes colored glue too.
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for watching!

Thanks for the video! What is heat treated magnacut like to grind?

I’m currently running it at 62 with incredible results. 10 min soak at 2150
Mat thanks great video as always! My question is what is your heat treat and temper on your 440c EDC knives? Thanks for sharing
30 min soak at 1900. Plate quench. 350 temper. Gets me between 59-60 rc. 👊👊

Always enjoy your videos, great work. Do you have a recommendation for laser/water jetting or is that something you do yourself?
Check out waterjet knives on Instagram or New Jersey steel baron for waterjet service!

I do not use anything in the packet and I surface grind after heat treat to remove the decarb
Thanks for the reply. I have been keeping the patina on some of the knives. Thanks again. @@gentrycustomknives8008
Once I used paper and I sealed the package so tightly that I ended up with a puffed up package and a heavily oxidize blade 😂
Too much maybe? 😂
I wanna make a blade out of magnacut but what would happen if you grind the bevels first and then heat treat
Should be fine, I do it after to avoid warping
Great video but Dr. Larrin Thomas the creator of magnacut recommends 63 hrc
I’m currently doing mine to 62.5 + or - so I’d say that’s good enough! Sure performs great!

@@gentrycustomknives8008he also says for fixed blades and outdoor knives 62 is fine lol
Is a cryo bath not needed with Magna cut?
It’s not needed but Is recommended . It will bump the hardness up about 1 point it looks like.
That magnacut knife looks decarburised. You should stress relief it in a vacuum furnace
Ok
😊😊
Thanks for watching!
@@gentrycustomknives8008I use dyed wood veener for my liners Lol...its beyond cool looking. I layer it on the scale, let glue dry over nite🙂
