  • Solving the yellow oil warning light on start up and diagnosing a bad oil level sensor on BMW E46 with N42/N46 engine.
    I explain what red or yellow oil warning light mean, then I use INPA to check for codes. I get the following error:
    27C3 CDKTOENS - Signal Oelniveausensor (TOENS)
    with description:
    Signal abgefallen
    Testbedingungen erfuellt
    Fehler momentan vorhanden und bereits gespeichert
    Fehler wuerde kein Aufleuchten einer Warnlampe verursachen
    I also explain a little bit how the thermal oil level sensor works. I tried to clean the oil from the sensor connector but that did not work. I then replace the sensor with a new one and the problem is solved.

    I really appreciate your content! I also have an N42b20 and not a lot of videos and resources put out there.
    I hope to see more content from this engine soon!

    Great video man as always!
    I have the same problem with the Oil level sensor but even after changing it the error still resides.
    After some troubleshooting I found out that Oil was pushed through the harness into the ECU... the ECU seems fine no oil inside of it only in the plugs.
    Now I am struggling if I replace the whole harness or just the cables running to and from the oil level sensor 😅

      How did oil make it to the ECU?

    This is great, could you kindly do a video on how to know when the automatic gearbox for an N42 engine is ready for repair/service. I have been experiencing delayed shifting from my auto transmission and have been thinking of an oil change but others have been advising that I just get a new transmission. Would be great to hear from you...all the love from Kenya

    Thank you for your great work. I have an off topic question regarding the camshaft position sensor. What should be the voltage for the signal wire? It should be 5V ? Because I have 11.8 and I have an error. Could you please check and let me know? Thank you for your implication.

    Very nice video. Thank you. I changed mine 2 years ago and the yellow light went on about 3 months after the replacement of the sensor. I never taught it could be a bad/oily connector. I wanted to blame the manufacturer, but now I have to check the connector.
    Do you use some service manual to get all the specific details on how sensor indicators work?

      Yes, I have access to the manuals where there are some functional descriptions of the subsystems.

    why when you connected the new sensor and start the car the oil light didn't come on, the new sensor is hanging so should report "low level"?

    • @BimmerZen
      @BimmerZen  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its a complex thermal oil level sensor which means the oil has to reach certain temperature for it to read the oil level correctly. In my case it would eventually throw another error, but not right away.

      @@BimmerZen useful info, thank you. 👍
      When under normal conditions this sensor should show a "low level light" - when the oil reaches the minimum mark of the dipstick or should go lower than that?
      I also noticed on my e46 that i have no yellow light when starting the car - only the red one which immediately disappeared when the engine is started? ( cluster check from the "hidden menu" - all lights work including the yellow one )

    Hey. I know its not the best way to seek contact but im gonna try anyways. Got my n46b18 daily shitbox, running pretty decentish, recently did valve stem seals using your kit and fixed timing sińce even though it was recently replaced by some sorry ass mechanic, he failed balance shaft timing and engine had a lot of vibration.
    There is one issue i cant work out, other than that everything is super fine: very rough and noisy cold start and warm-up. After starting the engine it imediately starts to rattle badly and does so until temp needle leaves blue area. The moment warm-up ends, engine starts working fine. Tried unplugging valvetronic, Vanos solenoids and then doing the cold start, there seems to be no difference. Im running out of ideas. What could it be? Previous timing guides have disintegrated catastrophically, i found many pieces scattered around the engine. Cleaned everything up, but havent touched nonreturn valves between head and block (im trying to avoid removing the head). Any ideas by chance?

    • @BimmerZen
      @BimmerZen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I did not notice any significant difference. Could be more noticeable in cold weather... I could not find any exact info on what changes are made to the engine operation but I'll look in to that since I am curious.
