  • Join gemmologist and geologist Charles Lawson as he investigates the fascinating story of how a sapphire is mined in Rubyvale, Queensland, how it is cut and polished and finally set into a finished piece of jewellery.
    Special thanks go out to the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, the University of Queensland, the University of Delaware Rubyvale Gem Gallery and Lawson Gems for supporting the making of this film.

    Lovely land great location more trees then this California desert we are living within. My geology came in handy watching this video. Great shared video a total and clear understanding
    Nice layering. great tunnels, We seek gold nuggets in this exact same way only that gold is always nearest the bottom of the wash plant system. Wow a cutter is a high skill job, nice added bonus here as he shares his skills and vast knowledge. Heat treat for color enhancing nice to learn this. Great business model lesson here as well, they are beautiful varieties of stone they cut and polish.
    Thank you, Lance & Patrick.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glad you liked it 😁. Haha yeah, there probably are a few more trees up in Rubyvale than the California desert, though droughts can still hit pretty hard there which can make using a sapphire wash plant like the one in the film a bit tricky at times. But it is definitely a beautiful part of Australia to visit 🙂

    I lived at Sapphire during the 80,s , a major problem we had back then was cutters, who didn’t give you back the same stone !? Excuses like they put it thru heat treatment, and it changed colours?? So we could only sell our stone uncut, wich meant lower prices! Wich made it not worth the efert! We called it drinking money! Just wondering if it’s worth going back to my old stomping grounds?? Where I know good stone, was pulled out in my time !??? I was a professional test hole driller for great northern mining on the Subura! Property, wich was owned by my mates Dad! I’ve done many test holes throughout the gem fields, I’m thinking of going back, now prices have gone up !,

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is actually close to the center of Rubyvale in the small scale mining lease area, the Capricorn mine is a bit further out where the yields are lower so more industry scale (or at least full mechanized mining) is allowed.

    I live in America and go to the Smoky Mountains quite a bit and have found Ruby and sapphire, sometimes as a mixture but have never found some the the beautiful crystalline structure sapphire you show in this video. They appear opaque but do however fluoresce under u.v. light a bright pink or blue and have obvious " steps " present. Do they have a matrix covering them? Are they gem quality? I also have emerald in varying shades of green. Some crystalline and others almost blackish green in color attached to the more crystalline emerald. I have only cleaned them and keep them in a pretty bowl to admire. No one near me to validate them with the exception of a few lapidaries who say they are. All were found in the cold, clean, beautiful mountain streams and rivers. I just dig up as much gravel on top of bedrock and sift them into varying sizes. I have also found what I believe to be diamond in these rivers and streams because of the " glow " and refraction of light they make but some are stepped in flat sheets and others appear as clear river rock but that glow! I have used a diamond tester ( properly by weight and following the testers instructions) some ring up quite quickly while others only seem to have small quantity of diamond and ring up much more slowly, but this is diamond rough and I'm not sure a diamond tester is meant to test diamond rough. I do the " ice " test. Diamond is one of the best conductors of heat, if not the best, so I put a block of ice in a bowl, gently hold the rough onto the ice, not pushing at all and it appears the diamond rough transfers the heat from my fingers down from my fingers onto the ice and quickly melts the ice. In fact, as I hold the diamond to be tested, it is cold at first, then turns to my body temperature and it's as if I 'm holding nothing at all. As it quickly moves through the ice it begins to become cold once again as it touches bottom. I 've tested other silicates such as Quartz, amethyst and other gems that are not carbon based and they will eventually melt some ice but not completely nor as fast. I also found a fairly large block of dark green but translucent ( especially with a light behind it ) but not quite sure what this is. It also has gold flecks all over the back side. Could be Micha but dents when I press it with a fingernail. Micha usually flakes off. I wonder if the is a type of Jade? Also big, round garnets that I think is Rope Garnet. Sorry to drag on about other subjects other than sapphire but you know how women can droll on. Thanks for your time and have sure enjoyed this video. G'day mates and thanks again. 😉☺️😊
