We had the sweetest, most polite and handsome little chihuahua, named Stan, whom we got, from the pound. He was the best little dog and so quiet you could lose track of him. He would ask permission to come indoors, waiting patiently until invited in. He would ‘bark’ at deliverymen, going onto the porch to say, “woof, woof” at a conversational level, just announcing the mail. We miss him terribly.

As a former basenji owner I call shenanigan's on this one. While they may not give a full throat bark they are NOT that quiet and they are lively as heck. They were bred as a hunting dog and have tons of energy. My basenji could run rings around my Doberman.
My Bassenjis were not barkers but boy when they chortled, the neighbors thought someone was being murdered. I had one for 5 years (died of diabetes) and one for 12 years (died of old age). I can't say they were great dogs as they were escape artists, extremely energetic even in hot weather, and were very standoffish, even more than my cat. I will take my Staffy mix any day over either of them. She is not a barker, growler but a lover. She will lick you forever and lay on your feet, giving you sweet puppy dog eyes.

No, it's unfortunately not that simple. I had a cocker spaniel that got HOURS of exercise a day, and would immediately start howling and barking the minute I left. Basenjis may be known as a "barkless dog", however, they can be one of the noisiest dogs around! They can howl, yip, yap, and scream, etc. One of the noisiest dog shows I was ever involved in was one where there was a Basenji specialty. All the basenjis were crated together in one area of the coliseum and it was such a noisy area that we all had to try our best to avoid the area.
We've had two Basenjis that were very quiet. Our last boy howled only very occasionally when he seemed to be having a nightmare. After reassuring him, he'd quiet down. I miss them so much.

I had a delightful Papillon from the pound. He barked too much because the neighbor dogs barked. I built him a platform with steps so he could see outside, and he immediately quit barking and tearing at the curtains to see out when the neighbors barked. All this helped. My sister has a Bichon Frise, and it barks and whines if you leave the room, to the extent that it can never be left because it stresses itself out so much. My Pekingese doesn’t bark much. However, I had one that just loved to howl. I think it had to do with separation anxiety which started with her previous owners that left her home alone a lot.
I had a frenchie, only time she barked was if we were all at home and someone rings on the doorbell, then she'd literally just bark once (woof), and thats it. From my experience any small dog with terrier in them are nighmares when it comes to barking.. they have guard dog in them and doesn't matter how much excersise they get they'll bark anyway at any sound...
I have a Boston Terrier that can be outside in the garden for hours (she likes that), and I can't hear a thing from her; she only barks when the doorbell rings, very quiet dog.
I have a toy poodle that I got from the Humane Society. He's 16, and I've had him 4 years. I have heard him bark about 5 times over those 4 years, and ever so briefly when he did. I've had poodles since mid 70s (5 in all) and have never had a yapping dog. The other ones I raised since they were puppies, so I was able to imprint on them early. I would never allow any of my dogs to bark incessantly, although I do want them to bark if someone is at the door or making noise outside my house. It was so easy to teach them not to bark. But this last dog was 12 when I got him, so I didn't have the chance to teach him about barking. Turns out I didn't need to. So much for the unending stereotyping of small dogs. It really does get tiresome, but I guess people are going to believe what they want to believe.
Sometimes quiet depends upon the hooman. I had the quietest of all dogs I had, a chihuahua. She lived 15 yrs and a real sweetheart. Another quests all dog was a Pomeranian mix. I dunno what to say, mine are quiet.
Clearly you’ve never met many pugs. We’ve had 4 and they were the loudest dogs ever. Yips, screams (I call it a pug yodel), snorts, whines and barks, so many barks. They were even noisy sleepers - ours have all snored louder than any man I’ve ever met
They're making all kinds of weird noises because they can't breathe properly just like the Frenchie. It truly breaks my heart thinking about flat faced breathes like the British. bulldog. It's just plain cruel and something should be done to elongate their faces. Btw you can blame people who show dogs for this cruelty, if you look at a picture of a British Bulldog from the mid 19th century, they look absolutely nothing like today's type.
My sister has a mutt -- 1/5 min pin, 1/5 poodle, 1/5 beagle, 1/5 chihuahua, and lastly 1/5 stadforshire terrier -- you'd think he'd bark -- but no - very quiet little guy their labradoodle on the other hand ....
We walk our fur baby everyday, and we hear barking equally from large breed dogs as smaller dog breeds. That's what dogs were historically bred for: vigilance and security - big or small or medium.
We had basenji's for years. These are smart, marvelous, extremely loyal, loving dogs that due to their high entergy levels are wonderful for those living in the country and often terrible for those living in confinded spaces. They need to live with you and are TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE,TERRIBLE back-yard only or kennel dogs! They want to be on or under something, ours used to stay on top of their "peak-roofed" doghouse. These athletic, little beast jump like gazelles, ie. our female used to lay down under the bushes like she was asleep and then spring-up 6-8 feet and come down with a passing bird! They are cat-like/semi-domesticated, i.e. come when "they want to" and are almost impossible to obedience train, but will willingly follow and unless they "rolled in something," they are fastiously clean. They are fast as greased lightening, i.e. faster than any other dog you own in short distances! Basenji's are great sight hounds and excell at rabbit hunting - but need to wear bells so that you know where these barkless hounds are! Our female used to "step on the head of our shorthair" to wake him up to bark at intruders, i.e. the garbage men, while she stood next to the shorthair and "smiled"! I live in the city with a nice yard and won't own a single basenji, but if I lived out in the country, I'd have six!!!
I got nipped, my pug. Did you draw a little bit of blood? But not much. My regular visit at the dog park, well, my little girl was out playing, I would greet other dogs. I was busy in conversation with a fellow dog owner, this little pug was upset, because I have not had it or greeted him. Finally, he nipped my leg. He sat back and looked at me defiantly. I apologized. I gave him the petting he was looking for. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but all he was trying to do is get my attention. I wish she had barked, but he was totally silent. His daddy and mother was very upset. I reassured them that he was just trying to get my attention and wasn’t really a bite. There’s a big difference between a front tooth, nip, and a bite.
I have had labs and papions, not much barking ju size love them, miss them but I am 83 yr handy cap, nice for another but 50 % I get on floor and need help.
As an apt dweller, neighbours have all different kinds of dogs. Every breed either woofs, or bark or scrabble as i walk down the carpeted hall to the elevator. Ugh
English Toy Spaniel. Nothing phases them, they're extremely quiet, low energy, companion dogs. Passive almost to a fault they are great with kids, strangers, other dogs. Probably the world's worst watchdog though, and don't expect them to walk more than a few blocks... especially in weather above 70⁰.
The girl with the Shiba Inu is not a good match with that breed. She apparently is the kind that picks at dogs to upset them them curly smacks or angrily lead check them. They are very kind dogs to kind people. Won’t be back here.
I would have to disagree with the Pug not barking much My daughter had four at one time, they all barked incessantly, two were even aggressive toward my neighbor. Funny thing is that deer that came up to the fence ignored the Pugs even though the Pugs were barking. The deer not intimidated at all by the barking.
Yes. It's one of the few drawbacks of Paps. They will bark if threatened or territory invaded. But they are one of the most trainable small dogs and the barking can be curbed. I guess she was comparing them to POMS perhaps? They do bark less than Poms.
my boarder collie hardly barks at any thing, if someone is messing around at night she will sit next to me and make a huffing sound but no barking and thats when i look around
Love my pug but she barks All. The. Time. She also makes a lot of other sounds that very between screaming and howling and it’s quite entertaining, but mostly just barks and it does drive me nuts.
This person obviously has never owned a frenchie, they can be very vocal even if they don't "bark" much persay. Basenji's as well are vocal even if they don't "bark" as they are literally known as the barkless dog. They do however yodel and whine which can be just as annoying while extremely cute. Having spent a lot of time around both, Basenjis do tend to be quieter than other breeds, but with Frenchies it's a crap shoot. If you get a conversationalist they will hardly be quiet as frenchies can be quite opinionated and will share those opinions....ROFL
Basenji's SCREAM, yodel, and basically sound like a murder half the time. THey also climb and open locks. Same with Shibas. Shibas are escape artists and not suited for apartments.
@@lgood4970 Never owned a Shiba but literally grew up with Basenji's as my mom raised them for show. The average basenji is quieter than most but get one with a little anxiety or ADHD and that changes quickly into very loud and annoying dogs...lol. Still love Basenji's but I wouldn't call them as a group a good apartment dog. As always it depends completely on the individual.
@@NerdyNanaSimulations I like my neighbor's basenji from many years go...but he screamed any time he was in the yard. Bloody murder. And he was super energetic. It wasn't a bark. But it wasn't exactly quiet. Perhaps his basenji was just more 'talky' that the average one. Nice dog--but so many weird sounds. Shibas are great, but are very, very smart. Can climb fences. I've met 2 that could unlock the gates or crates. If one tried to keep one in an apartment, they'd have to be kept mentally stimulated.
For the love of god please do your research. The only two breeds on the list that actually don’t bark much are the Italian Greyhound and Whippet. I have all of these breeds over the years, Papillons a breed I have owned since 1978 are far from silent dogs and will alert to every noise or perceived danger. Basenji, while barkless are extremely vocal and will yodel at the strangest times of the day. People please do your homework and go meet good breeders before getting a dog.
Whippets are gentle. But bred as a prey dog, sight hound class. Mine is gentle but I've seen her take & kill 2 groundhogs & a possum. They grab them by the neck and shake until the neck snaps. Then they sniff making sure it's dead & just walk away. It's what whippets were bred for. There's quite a few breeds that were bred to kill vermin
It always amazes me that humans are the noisiest creatures on the planet. Not only do people play loud music, humans talk constantly. They not only talk, they have loud motors of all sorts. And remember, dogs and other animals have a far more sensitive sense of hearing. Our noises distress digs too. Humans also have developed electronic devices that we do not hear but the sensitive ears of our dogs do. Best to not get a dog if you want it to be mute. How about a goldfish?
I dont know i think it depends i hqve a boston terrier and a french bulldog and both bark at the sound of the wind hitting the window.
I love your film. Xxxx
Thank you so much 💓
Anyone know what breed the large, handsome black dog next to papillon is? at 3:20
Looks like a flat coated retriever. They’re usually all black though so not sure
My Shiba Inu hardly ever barks…. But he sure as hell SCREAMS !
When wanting to get at the locals cows, horses, goats…
Clearly you’ve never met many pugs. We’ve had 4 and they were the loudest dogs ever. Yips, screams (I call it a pug yodel), snorts, whines and barks, so many barks. They were even noisy sleepers - ours have all snored louder than any man I’ve ever met
my first pug all most never barked and would just sit and watch fireworks not make a sound but the one I have now
is just like what you have said
Pug screams are the stuff of horror movies!
My Chihuahua only barks a few times if the door bell rings other than that he's totally quiet, he never barks at me, guess I just got lucky ❤
🦷👍👍🦷
My male gsd rarely barked or reacted to anything, but when there was a real threat, his reaction was blood curdling.❤
My sister has a mutt -- 1/5 min pin, 1/5 poodle, 1/5 beagle, 1/5 chihuahua, and lastly 1/5 stadforshire terrier -- you'd think he'd bark -- but no - very quiet little guy
their labradoodle on the other hand ....
He must feel very mixed up and confused at times.😂
My cavalier spaniel *never* barked but ive been around some who are very yappy (but their owners dont stop them, so I blame them.)
Frenchies are talkers to the max!!!! Noisy.
Pugs don't bark, they scream. lol But they make great companions.
I’d nip you for boring text and ghastly English
I have had labs and papions, not much barking ju size love them, miss them but I am 83 yr handy cap, nice for another but 50 % I get on floor and need help.
Seems like yout Frechies habe a bit bir nose than ours. Less breathing problems. I appreciate this
You left out Boston Terriers, they are quieter then Frenchies!
My Dauchshund was a very quiet, laid-back dog..
You sure it was a daucshund
We need a best small dogs for walking video.
What about the Bedlington Terrier?
I got a broken Frenchie… he barks at everything.
Our Boston Terrier could be added to the list :)
Absolutely disagree. Our neighbor has 3 of them and they are such a loud barkers all the time.
I can tell you Chinese crested barks at all noise! I have three and sometimes it gets to be too much.
My miniature schnauzer only barks if someone comes to the door
Ive known an iggy and a pug who were quite barky...
I have an Aussie and he rarely barks
I have a Maltese and when she barks it’s such a shocker. Had her 3 years and she probably barked 5 times.
You forgot the Boston Terrier.
The girl with the Shiba Inu is not a good match with that breed. She apparently is the kind that picks at dogs to upset them them curly smacks or angrily lead check them. They are very kind dogs to kind people. Won’t be back here.
My APBT never barks. He's about 45 pounds of follow you EVERYWHERE. 😂❤
I would have to disagree with the Pug not barking much
My daughter had four at one time, they all barked incessantly, two were even aggressive toward my neighbor.
Funny thing is that deer that came up to the fence ignored the Pugs even though the Pugs were barking.
The deer not intimidated at all by the barking.
We have a terrier mix and he is the yappiest dog ever. I'll never get that breed again!
So do we. I hate it!
Want a quiet dog?
1. Get a larger breed without "small-dog-syndrome".
2. Train it right.
ROFLMAO, anyone who thinks papillons aren’t barkers has never lived with more than one at a time. In a pack they bark endlessly as they play together.
Yes. It's one of the few drawbacks of Paps. They will bark if threatened or territory invaded. But they are one of the most trainable small dogs and the barking can be curbed. I guess she was comparing them to POMS perhaps? They do bark less than Poms.
What is average cost of the small breeds?
my boarder collie hardly barks at any thing, if someone is messing around at night she will sit next to me and make a huffing sound but no barking and thats when i look around
My maltese shitzu doesnt bark at all. My lapso apso was also very quiet.
My Italian Greyhound barks A LOT and very loudly.
Love my pug but she barks All. The. Time. She also makes a lot of other sounds that very between screaming and howling and it’s quite entertaining, but mostly just barks and it does drive me nuts.
You have frenchies but not boston terriers?
Our Lhasa Apso hardly ever barks
I was chuckling, thinking, on what planet are frenchies quiet? I want to go.
@@GrannysWanderingSpirit My frenchie mix keeps up quite well with my husky.
Weird narration goes on about Whippet being gentle as video shows one chewing a bird's head off lol. 😅
Our poodles were not barkers. Just for the doorbell and stopped when door opened.
Xoloitzcuintle dog rarely bark, they are considered as mute dogs.
Whippet great dog if you dont have birds apparently if you look at the video that dog is eating someone's bird.
I love my Yorkie. I encourage him to bark and hopefully it bothers my annoying neighbors
Your comment proves you are the annoying neighbor.
😮Bassenji are more like cats than dogs. They rarely form strong bonds with people. They are climbers and jumpers and very stubborn creatures.
I TOO AM.CALLING SHENANIGAN , FRENCHIES quiet what planet are you on they YODEL for a start 😂😂😂😂😂
My x gf had a wiener dog. It was super annoying (never in a dangerous way). But it rarely barked or whimpered
My present frenchie doesn't bark unless startled. He's a very shilled out boy.
Jaden Alley
Kiarra Station
It always amazes me that humans are the noisiest creatures on the planet. Not only do people play loud music, humans talk constantly. They not only talk, they have loud motors of all sorts. And remember, dogs and other animals have a far more sensitive sense of hearing. Our noises distress digs too. Humans also have developed electronic devices that we do not hear but the sensitive ears of our dogs do. Best to not get a dog if you want it to be mute. How about a goldfish?
I have family who only ever have calavaliers. They always bark
I disagree about Cavies. Yes they are lovely dogs but goodness can they be noisy! Except one, I had one who barked about 5 times her whole life.
Most Shi Tsus are quite too I guess.
A Chorkie.
Boston Terriers are really low bark dogs
Cavaliers rarely bark.
My neighbors French bulldogs bark alot
French bulldogs? They may not bark, but good Lord, the Drama!
I dont know i think it depends i hqve a boston terrier and a french bulldog and both bark at the sound of the wind hitting the window. While my boston is a full snorkler sounds just like a pig in the mud and my frenchie is just a plain barker killer watch dog that runs for the hills when confronted. My sisters chiuhahua on the other hand will not bark but will bite. Go figure!
