mark guiliana drum solo with his band HEERNT, 12.01.06, in NYC. the solo leads into the song 'locked in a basement' from the band's debut album 'locked in a basement'.
Guiliana and HEERNT was at the little storefront of Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village (NCGV) on Bleecker Street, near NYU, which amazingly supports emerging artists.. I was honored to have been hired as the venue's visual arts curator for a good stretch.. Same Guiliana that was asked to be drummer for David Bowie's last album 'Blackstar'. Great stuff.
According to my Dec. 06' issue of Modern Drummer, his full cymbal setup is... 13" Sabian Duo hats 16" Sabian HHX Evolution crash 21" Sabian Fierce ride 20" Zildjian Crash of Doom 10" Sabian HH China Kang (broken), stacked on a 10" Paiste 502 splash
@Kraeezeu the 1 changes in the beginning constantly because he is soloing without a time signature he's just playing so its near impossible to find the 1 cause there is no definitive 1
the best at this stumbling drum style has got to be Jim Black, who I wouldn't be surprised if Mark G has spent some time with in the lesson room. great stuff though fer sure, and the Avishi Cohen stuff is awesome!
Fair enough. I'm glad not everyone in this world loves the same stuff because it would be one hell of a boring planet. However I used to be more into that kind of drumming until I saw what Mark Guiliana was capable of at a concert and it makes stuff like Sean Reinert's drumming look very rudimentary: Which is fine.. It suits the style of music as Mark's compliments his own compositions. Just saying this because believe it or not, you're missing out.
@abeltab no this kind of free form solo has no definitive 1. You just play ideas and portray feelings and emotions through different rhythms and sounds. No time signature or time really involved
Philistine :P He's the best all round drummer in my personal opinion, but even if you hated his playing, you'd be a fool to not recognise he's got a great talent and ample creativity.
In playing and listening to drums for 40 years I have to say that Giuliana seems unparalleled. Stylistically for sure. Spastic but awesome. Chops-wise, he almost unreal at times.... does a player like this develop in isolation...or by studying, listening to all kinds of whacked-out shit and not taking his meds??
Mark, i know i won't expect an answer for this question because is like ask a wizard to reveal his secrets...BUT, what is that at 1:32? is that a pedal? a midi controller from a sampler? i' m too curious... anyway...excellent solo as always! You're the future man! Greetings from italy and sorry for my english! :)
Doesn't sound like MG it sounds rather like someone trying to emulate his moves , like when you buy a guitar and a blond wig ,tear your jeans standing in front of the mirror trying to be curt Cobain than you call up few friends to join your plot and show up on MTV thinking nobody will notice you are Helmut Schmit
haha..... thats was the shit part for me... awesome creativity and ideas but he didn't learn to "groove"... not a son of groove; but anyway he pissed me off!
this will f drummers up for 20 years
it is... it is
Yes it is
3 years to go, still is
This video changed my life. Thanks for 16 years of inspiration Mark!
12 years ago..... still studying your stile....I love your drumming and your music!
I still come back to this.
God this is too fucking good, that fucking footwork
this guy is scary good. i love how he can just erupt into these super dense rhythms from some ethereal texture. he's unreal
Zach Hill, Mark Guilana, Chris Dave, and Dave King locked in a room with 4 drum kits.
Fund it.

Still waiting huh?
Amazing chops
the best.
4 piece drum set baby !
Once again PROOF that when you are creative you seldom need more than 4 drums and 4 cymbals.
Good Stuff Mark G
Incredible BEAT
i think this is still my favorite clip of mark
Incredible
Unconscious knowing level.
Nice sound great 👍
According to my Dec. 06' issue of Modern Drummer, his full cymbal setup is...
13" Sabian Duo hats
16" Sabian HHX Evolution crash
21" Sabian Fierce ride
20" Zildjian Crash of Doom
10" Sabian HH China Kang (broken), stacked on a 10" Paiste 502 splash

@Kraeezeu the 1 changes in the beginning constantly because he is soloing without a time signature he's just playing so its near impossible to find the 1 cause there is no definitive 1
This exists! Yeah
One month!
@BillionYearSP Wrong....If Zappa were still alive,he would be perfect singer and guitar player for Mark Guiliana... ; -)
this man diggs it
god where is this guy, where are his albums?? I need more of this!!
I love it. What's his main ride here, anyone?
anybody know of any bands similar to this? Thanks
wow. anyone know what cymbals he's using? Especially that ride!
2:00 this moment though 😂
the best at this stumbling drum style has got to be Jim Black, who I wouldn't be surprised if Mark G has spent some time with in the lesson room.
great stuff though fer sure, and the Avishi Cohen stuff is awesome!
1:27 is pretty funky
Hey Mark, what's the club's name???? anyone knows
yea I totally feel that, but that's not due to a new drummer. The band evolved as a whole :)
2:53 is 'the beat' !!!
nice solo
@PearlDrumsAllDay94 theres def a 1. hes just playing over it
@sumstufflol I support your cause.

isolation... studying, listening to everything, practicing relentlessly, and THROWING OUT THE MEDS.
Yes.
That would be the recipe.
He is so out of, but in beat, it's amazing.
He was locked in the basement
@sumstufflol and greg saunier...
avishai cohen trio. u might like it ., mark again.

riccardo lombardo is even more extreme

Where is this at? A coffee shop?
That's kind of untipical see him playing in traditonal grip, i love he's match griped style.. looks so natural..
Guiliana is fantastic but Thomas Pridgen fits MV a lot more. I went to school with him he's ridiculous.
aka mitch mitchell
1:26 "Auh!" The hit was too much for that guy... ow!
try playing that dude lol then try playing just the drums like he dose in heernts song "locked in a basement" it takes a while a good while
