22-years old when he recorded "Eruption". There's a prodigy! Still, my favorite Eddie Van Halen story is "Beat It". It took him UNDER an hour to improvise a solo, record it, and rearrange Michael Jackson's entire song to make it less "Pop" more "Rock". All for free with ZERO credit. Just to help another musician, just to create good music. Who the hell is like that anymore???
He's playing the guitar at points like an arpreggiated synthesizer, others sounding like a violin, and others just brutal shredding. This has got to be one of the most impressive live solos in existence
One of the first concerts I’ve attended was Van Halen in Paris, June the 3rd in 1980. I was just 18. I already knew VH1 by heart but Eruption fried my brain for ever that day. Epic memory. But it was only the tip of the mountain of emotions we felt during the whole show, my younger brother and I. To this day, listening to Eruption brings me back to June, 3rd in 1980. Eddie you’re a Legend and will never be forgotten.
as a guitarist myself I remember watching this when i was about 15 non- stop for hours and hours..wondering how someone could smoke at the same time, get all the timing so right, play so naturally and utterly dominate the instrument like he did in this performance. one of the best live solos ever.
his bandmates always to the time to molest groupies while Ed did his wanky shite solos. "Dont stop now, Ed, the drugs got me flaccid, we need more time hahah"
I have seen this over and over and over. I love watching this. Have nothing to say but rest in. Peace Eddie, we miss you. We cry for you. You're the goat the best ever listen to Van Halen South Florida 105.9 FM big 106.. every time I see this I cry. I cry. I'm 58 years old. I don't care. I'm human like the rest of us. 3 years he's been gone. It doesn't get any easier. We miss you. Eddie! Your fans.. You will never ever be forgotten!
His playing is beyond insane. Regardless if he was reportedly drunk at this concert, had probable hearing loss/tinnitus, couldn't read his piano music lessons properly as a kid, you can't teach that kind of playing. Pure talent and genius period. May His Memory Always Be a Blessing...
"reportedly drunk at this concert" dude he was reportedly drunk at every concert. he was reportedly drunk for about 30 years, what do u even mean? matter of fact, almost every single rockstar back then was reportedly drunk, all the time!
I had the privilege of meeting this man at his home and he was the nicest person I've ever met. You would have never known you were in the presence of such a legendary musician. To say he was humble would be an understatement.
This isn't just Eruption. This is a combo of: 316, Spanish fly, Cathedral and Eruption. Along with some improvisation of Mean Street with a Dash of Intruder.⚡🎸
I find myself listening to this so often, but I specifically listen to the Cathedral portion on repeat like 7-8 times each time I bring this video up. Just absolutely love that portion of this solo. RIP Eddie. Legend.
We are so fortunate that filmographers had the presence of mind in the day to capture shows like this. Many of us who attended the shows took them for granted and had no idea what we were witnessing - one of the most revolutionary guitarists to hit the planet, but that he was indeed mortal.
Imagine being him. Every moment in history has lead up to this moment. You are the best in the world, absolutely blowing everyone away. They are there for you, your fans, and you will never be forgotten. Imagine that
I've been paralyzed through 23 surgeries on. My hip but I'm finally healing I'm going to listen to this every time I swim to get better and stronger thank you so much for your music
My father died of the same disease just over a month ago, you suffer too much from the treatment and progress of the disease, I believe that just like my father, our rock monster Van Halen rested in peace, he will make solos for God in the sky now.
I lost my grandmother 5 years ago to cancer, Van Halen was one of her favourite bands growing up and she's the one who introduced me to his music, such a sad loss! He will be remembered for centuries! Absolute legend! RIP Eddie!
When you’re smoking a cigarette stuck to the neck of the guitar while you throw picks to the crowd with your right hand and play the guitar with your left, you know you’re the best in the world.
I guess it was faster to throw his pick in the audience, when he switches to tapping, rather than stick it back onto his guitar where the sticky tape is holding all the other picks
Eddie *is* the God of guitar in every aspect: sound, appearance, skill, game-changing. RIP Eddie, you are missed so badly. thank God you live on in your music. Listening to you makes you come back to life for a short period of time.
never had a death of a celebrity impacted me as much as Eddie has. Never had I shed a tear for the passing for a celebrity like i have for Eddie. Being introduced to Van Halen at a young age truly changed my life along side bands like ACDC, Deep Purple. Eddie was much more than a musician, he was a visionary and his death has left a mark on everyone, even those outside of the rock community. RIP Eddie I will make sure to keep your music going for generations to come.
Same here, Diver Down was one of the first three "metal" records I owned, that music was life itself. Had the other albums on 8 track even. Sometimes the mind just cannot comprehend a world with a particular artist, and he is right up there at the top. No other deserves the title as Greatest Guitarist Ever as much as Eddie. Still trying to wrap my mind around it.
I said the same thing when Kobe Bryant passed this year. We've lost three icons this year. One in basketball and two in music. This year has been the worst.
Das ist einfach das beste was je auf einer Gitarre vor so vielen Menschen gespielt wurde. Danke Eddie für alles was Du für die Gitarre und den rest der verdammten Welt getan hast.:-)
As a classical pianist you can hear beautiful melodies and arpeggios he's playing with insane accuracy, tempo, tone and feel. He even uses dynamics as much as you can with a distorted electric guitar. There's a reason he named his son Wolfgang. Rest in peace.
Here it is: the reason this man is remembered and talked about over 40 years after their debut was released. He reinvented music with his inventive style and technique and there will NEVER be another like him! Van Halen was my first concert experience and I wouldn’t trade those memories for all the money in the world. RIP Eddie!
5:07 To me this is the greatest guitar sound of all time. The brilliance of having the creative mind to conjure up such a masterful sound using a technique that he perfected and practically made his own is nothing short of sublime. This entire solo is a testament to the best of human imagination and passion for life. RIP Eddie Van Halen. And thank you ❤
What a time to be alive that would have been, wish I could go back to each decade and live from ages 15-25 to experience the greatness before everything became digital
Incredibly gifted and nice guy. Looks like he's truly enjoying himself up there entertaining us. Mind boggling talent. My heart is very heavy today. Thank you, Eddie Van Halen, for sharing your ethereal talent with the world.
Eddie was one of those rare guitar players where he became part of his guitar and his guitar became a part of him while playing, they meld together. Kind of like making love to a woman you really love and never want to let that feeling go. That smile on Eddies face, he is just loving every moment of it, Eddie and guitar as one. I have seen VH three times in concert, and Eddie was like that every time I saw them. He never had a bad performance. RIP Eddie!
I love how Eddie does the Eruption solo and the crowd goes nuts and all he does in response is just give a little thumbs up and then goes right back to playing. There really was no other guitarist like him and there never will be in my opinion
I can only watch a few minutes before boredom sets in. Lots of playing finger taps and pull offs but no song. In his era Randy Rhodes was simply superior in all categories.
JensJulius Tejlaard. I'm so thankful that I got to see both the og line up of Van Halen and the version with Sammy. Imo. both were awesome in their own way. R.I.P. Eddie thanks for all of the music.
Cancer is a bitch. Too many great musicians passed away from it - Bob Marley, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin, Ronnie James Dio, and now Eddie Van Halen.
Definitely one of, if not THE most influential guitar player ever, EVH inspired millions of people to pick up the guitar and pursue careers in music. EVH is up there jamming with many of the other greats much like himself. Rest in piece King Edward Van Halen 🎸
This is so not true, i challenge you to become as good as ehv or jason becker just by pracricing At this point its just genius and nothing else (Remember he basicly "created" tapping so you will also need to create a new guitar technique)
This piece is no different than a concert pianist or violinist or cellist masterfully playing a piece of classical music. This man and his instrument are one. He can feel the music and he allows the listener to feel it thru him. That's the mark of a genius. It's emotional.
2:28 Eddie tosses his actual pick then proceeded to pull out another pick.... This is the *POD* (the pick of destiny) notice how his playing multiplies by 10000x
This was one of the last things I listened to with my dad back in February before he died. Just before lockdown, I suppose. We'd trade songs. He'd play Van Halen, I'd play Dragonforce. He'd play Pink Floyd, I'd play Disturbed. He'd play Ian Dury, I'd play Tenacious D. We shared all kinds of songs with eachother, but Van Halen, this solo inparticular, he'd always want me to find for him. I could never appreciate as much as he did at the time, but after he passed, I'd always come back to it. I hate that I could never love it as much as he did while he was still around. He wanted to share what he loved with me, but I couldn't do it in time. For some, this is a throwback to the past, for some kind of normalcy. For others, this will remain a fixture in current events, always in their lives. All that matters is that Eddie Van Halen is one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, and always will be. I may not be well versed in all things Van Halen, but I know in my heart that they're above the rest and always will be. Thank you Eddie Van Halen for helping me forge memories with my dad, and may you Rest In Peace.
@@DeezyDoezIt i wasn't comparing the two. It just so happened that the last concert I went to was Dragonforce, so naturally I was playing a lot of it. I was just saying that it was a way for me to share moments with my dad in his final time. If you interpreted it that way, then fair enough
Nah, Andrew’s just being a music snob man, anyone with solid parents understands the value of moments like those. I’m sorry about your loss, hope those memories stick with you. Keep rocking 🤘
I guess that's me. I saw this tour/show in 1985. It was my second concert ever. Kiss Asylum tour was my first. Who really appreciates something like this until it's gone. It's kind of like me speaking with someone who saw Led Zeppelin live.
Seen any play so many times live. He is so mesmerizing. You cannot take your eyes off him. You cry. It's just you cry because you're so happy watching him play. He is unbelievable. Just like Hendrix you know vy it's so weird. He's been gone for 3 years, almost four. It's tough we all grew up with Van Halen. I mean they started in 1972 as Mammoth. Then they changed their name in 1978 February when their first album came out. Per David Lee Roth too. Eddie Van Halen too Van Halen the rest is history. I've seen them live so many times. I'm happy I had that chance. I live in South Florida. Wbgg big 105.9 my station
To anyone who wonders why he is know as the Mozart of guitar, this is a prime example. This is a guy who could play around on guitar for a minute and improv the most beautiful guitar part you’ve heard all year. This is a guy who could tune his guitar IN THE MIDDLE OF A SOLO and just seamlessly incorporate it INTO THE SOLO. That guitar is like clay in his hands, and his solos are just statuesque masterpieces. RIP Eddie Van Halen, one of the greatest guitarists of all time and space.
You were fearfully and wonderfully created by the Living God in His image to live forever. Do not dare to compare yourself with any lifeless thing that appears and disappears. Every human being is twice belongs to God the Father, as He not only created us but also carried us our sins and died in our place when we disobeyed and dishonoured Him, so that we may live with Him forever. Let everything that has breath praise Jesus Christ- The Lord of lords & King of kings !
Devastating, absolutely devastating. A ridiculously gargantuan loss to the rock/music world, the world as a whole, really. Eddie was the single greatest rock guitarist in history. He influenced generations of people to pick up a guitar, to practice more, to "feel" the music more. He will be terribly missed. My condolences to his family. My older brother learned to play because of Eddie's influence, always turning up the volume when Van Halen came on the radio. My brother passed away over 15 years ago at a ridiculously young age. Today, he is meeting his hero.
Eddie was *born* to play the guitar. I remember listening to an interview he did with Howard Stern back in the day and Stern could barely get a word out of him. He just sat there on the couch playing his guitar for most of the interview. Every once in a while you encounter someone who was simply meant for a certain thing in life…there’s no question that Eddie was meant to be an electric guitar genius. It was in his DNA, front to back.
This video is only 13 minutes long but he could have easily gone on for a full 30. God speed Eddie Van Halen, you truly were an absolute master of your craft. Rest in Peace

He wasn’t from this universe. He was one of the most talented people God ever gave us. I wish I could have gotten to a Van Halen concert. My dad and I have listened to Van Halen ever since I was a baby. We would stay up late listening to Van Halen as loud as the speakers would go. I’m crying so hard... The world will miss you Eddie
My sister and I went many years ago with excellent seats. Great concert but the funniest part were the two drunk guys who passed out and missed the whole thing!
Only now that Eddie has passed is everyone realizing what many of us have been saying for decades. That this is the greatest guitar player who ever touched the instrument. An absolute apex predictor who played so outside the box that even to this day many people still don't see the genius of his playing. So many musicians over the years have cited the brilliance of Eddie Van Halen from other guitar masters like Slash. To country/pop stars like Shania Twain and Taylor Swift and obviously many many more. Eddie passing is sad, but the true tragedy is that unless you heard him live, you have never heard him. Their is no Audio recordings that even comes close to hearing the intensity and tone when it came right out of his cabinets on stage. This was the man who peeled the paint off the walls in every arena he ever played in, this was the man who was so good thst most of the time he was throttled back so as to allow his other band mates to hold on, and this is also the guy who apart from being part of the most insane band ever still managed to raise a fantastic and talented son, beat Alcohol, and gave all of us something to Remember. Rip Eddie Van Halen.
*To the OP: Yours is one of the absolute BEST comments I've read in the past several days since Eddie's passing. Not only did you so eloquently describe what made Eddie Van Halen so fantastical, so almost supernatural, (and to put it simply, just a pure legend), but you literally moved me to tears. It's nice to know that there are people like you out there who truly appreciate kick ass, iconic music, absolutely insanely artistic musical ability and, a general overall respect for a musician and his craft. We are so fortunate that filmographers had the presence of mind in the day to capture shows like this. Many of us who attended the shows took them for granted and had no idea what we were witnessing - one of the most revolutionary guitarists to hit the planet, but that he was indeed mortal.
