On "My Car Story" we're in Rosemont IL on 3-12-15 at the World of Wheels.
We're looking at a 1969 Buick Riviera GS Gran Sport in Embassy Gold.
The car's Owner is Don Adams. This car is ALL original! Don shares how had a Buick and thought it was classy, and then after getting rid of the car how surprised he was when he found another one in a Buick magazine and his wife suggested in 2002 that he should look into purchasing the car. It looks like it all worked out ok. It’s a great looking classy ride!

    Gorgeous.
The summer of 69 saw some of my family members get new cars. My Aunt BeBe bought a midnight green '69 Chrysler New Yorker from Fred Oakley Chrysler-Plymouth. My Aunt Nancy bought a '69 Mercury Marquis Brougham from John Eagle Lincoln Mercury.
Just before my mother ordered a new '69 Grand Prix Model J from Van Winkle Pontiac in Dallas, we took a look at a Sapphire Blue 69 Riviera with white top and interior sitting in the lot at Don Snell Buick.
I have a love affair with hidden headlights. I remember watching a salesman raise the hood and turn on lights. My 5 y/o mind was impressed.
I read an article a while back about some of the reasons auto manufacturers stopped offering them. Among them were the higher repair rates after a front end crash. Leaks in the vacuum lines and motors freezing in very cold climates.
The '66-'69 Riviera came under fire from the NHTSA because the lights came on first before swinging down. It said drivers coming from the opposite direction, at night, were temporarily blinded by the lights as they swung down into position. I guess GM could have manufactured a two stage switch that swung the lights down before turning them on, but honestly I can't imagine anyone being so blinded in the seconds of operation that it would cause an accident.
Anyway, this is another great Lou.
    Thank you.
    Derric :-)

AM/FM Stereo radios were gaining in popularity by this time period. GM started offering this option on their full sized cars starting in 1965. This particular vehicle also appeared to have the Comfortron automatic climate control. This car probably was a little over $7000 when new because it was so well equipped.

I am primarily a Ford/Mercury guy, but I always had a soft spot for Buicks and Pontiacs. One day in the mid 90s, I was at work for a home service company, and since it was a Friday, I was running a route of 'special service' jobs out in the rural southeastern PA area. One was a newer client that I'd never visited, and I noticed he had a separate, 3 car garage off the side of his driveway. I looked into the garage door windows, to see 3 mid 60s Grand Sports inside! He wasn't home, so I didn't get a better look.
About an hour later, I pulled into the driveway of the next customer's home, about 5-6 miles away from that last home, and the first things I see in their open air carport, were TWO MORE Gran Sports!! That's 5 Gran Sports in 1 hour, at 2 back-to-back jobs! These 2 were both in beautiful condition. One was a dark greenish colored 1970 GS with the optional 455 Stage 1. The other was a 1972 GSX in silver with black stripes, and a 350. I hadn't seen either of those cars at that home before, and it turned out they had just been 'gifted' to the teenage kid who lived there, by his grandparents, who had originally bought them new, and cared for them for the previous 23-25 years! That's one LUCKY kid!! By now those 2 cars are worth a small fortune!

Narrator/host: you always want the guests to talk but you can't seem to stop interrupting them, talking over them, etc. It makes it really tough to watch. I always find myself thinking, if I was there I would just let that guy talk pretty much in his own direction until he wound down, prompt him with something else, and then use a simple video content editor to put it all together later. A great example is when the guy is talking about always loving buicks and still having his '75 and you literally talk right over him to say what a nice shape this particular Riviera has. We're all looking at it! We see the shape! It's just tough to listen to you do this over and over again with your guests. There's tons of good examples of how people can do these interviews correctly on youtube. A little research into that would go a long way.

Hi Nwilczn, You are correct. I need to not talk over Guests, I'll work on that. Also the Channel is many times at car shows and sometimes you have many distractions, so you do the best you can "at the moment" with what you have to work with. I understand Viewers can not see some of that, however I hope you'll continue to watch and feel free to let me know how I'm doing. Thank you for commenting, and I appreciate your feedback, Lou Let me show you a video from today. th-cam.com/video/wYNJNQVXu4w/w-d-xo.html

GM did that front-rear channels on some stereos into the 70s. It was terrible, especially on a convertible. The rear speaker would face toward the rear mounted in the seat back in the top well. The boot would enclose the speaker.

I've never been much into Buick... too much of a stodgy old (professional) man's brand. The suspension was always tuned too soft and the Dynaflows in the pre-1964 cars were very inefficient and responded sluggishly unless you manually shifted down into first gear. But the Riviera is such a beautiful car I make an exception for it.
Fortunately GM killed the Dynaflow in 1964 and made Buick use the Turbo-Hydramatic like the other premium GM brands. (They let Chevrolet keep using the Powerglide until 1973.)

  • @kipwilliam5593

The Buick brand was always quite superior to Cadillac & the styling, the ride, the reliability was perfection. I drive a 1996 Park Ave with a V6 engine, never ever a problem car, safe, solid, a car that would equal a Mercedes S-class. Unfortunately the newer Buick’s starting 1997 became cheap in overall quality, no difference from a Chev Impala or Malibu. Probably the main reason GM lost public respect & ended up going bankrupt. Years ago every GM division had the freedom to design & build cars that appealed to everyone.

Nope. The ‘68 Riv had separate backup lights in the bumper just under the tail light lens, the ‘69 had the backup lights incorporated in the lens. What a great car, I miss mine still!

    • @donadams8046
      @donadams8046 ปีที่แล้ว

The car is an early production 69, built Oct of 68. It has the 68 taillight bezels direct from the factory at time of build, as GM sometimes installed previous year parts on the new model until the supply was exhausted on the assembly line. This has been confirmed with the Tech Advisors in the ROA as correct. They are still trying to determine/document the actual date the 69 bezels started being installed on the assembly line. 68 had full red taillight lenses with the backup lamps installed separate in the lower section of the bumper where the bumper begins to curve inward. 69 the backup lamps were located in the taillight lens positioned closest to the gas tank lid
