1st excavator I ever operated. Ah the old Cat 215. Really reliable. The company I worked for then switched to the Korean Hyundai. It was a fine machine but I always longed for the old Cat.
I don't remember 200 series as being slow. ESPECIALLY 215s! They would swing fast enough to give you a nosebleed. You have to remember they made these up until the mid 90s or so, they competed against Komatsu, Kobelco, JD, Hitachi machines and the production you got out of them was pretty much equal. I like the travel pedals better in a 200 series than a new one.
YA' your right I got 215B fast machine , and good on fuel. The one in this video seems to have been abused for long time. Bucyrus Erie had a * Note in the service repair manuals that read ( for prolonged equipment life incompetent lazy personnel should not be left to work on or with heavy earth moving or hoisting equipment )
The clattering and banging is likely the fixed thumb. That was an old International wheeler. That was how I loaded my Volvo wheeler every time......... Fill It! Nice video.

I bought an 'ol wore out 215B today. It is my first Excavator!! +letsdig18 inspired me. My boy and I watch your videos. We are using it our on our farm! =)
this one in video is worn out and beat but the 215 series is extremely fast we have a 215blc bought new in 88 change the oil grease em clean em keep hydro oil clean its still as fast as when it was new good on fuel also if you take good care of the 200 series cats the will make you money for a long time be smart we have seven 200 series 215b,219d,231d,235d,245b, wheel type 212,and a214bft we also have some 300 series and i like the real cat 200 series much better if you keep them up they are better

@theoman69 23,6 something on the meter but the paper work says it was replaced @ 4,8something so 28,000 or so?

i would have used a front loader (like a 950G)...that thing is just too slow...but got to do whats you got to do

the older excavators arent A strong as the new ones
Its not to fast or powerful.It really not that big of a excavator.About 85hp
as sorry lol
