I live in a tropical climate & usually wear mine with a half lined 3 piece linen suit in solid neutral colour with notch lapel & less shoulder padding, solid knit tie, white linen dress shirt with barrel cuff, a simple white linen pocket square folded in a playful way & a pair of brown & cream spectator. To me this is the most casual way to pull off the straw boater hat. The texture from linen & knit tie, the formality level of notch lapel, less shoulder padding jacket & barrel cuff shirt is casual enough in my opinion. If u still want to be a bit more modern, a navy blazer, an odd trouser & a simple dress watch can be an option!
Now that is quite the outfit you describe. I agree hats like these need to be with a suit, but thank you for complimenting my attempts at dressing it down slightly. Seeing a young gentleman from TH-cam trying to pull off the straw boater is impressive to me. Huntington Library is nice. Drove up for a visit when I lived in San Diego. Relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. Wearing hats with a wide-brim in the Southeast -- especially straw -- is perfectly acceptable. A boater will be a little harder to pull off...but will try with a seersucker jacket or white polo. What a great compliment. Yeah seersucker always plays well with straw hats in general. Boaters hanker back to such different time. You would be one of few but that is what is so cool. I think with just a white polo would also look great; especially with some nice linen trousers.

If you wear one or its cousin the Amish hat, it takes confidence today to pull it off. In the 1910s and 1920s a man wouldn’t have looked out of place in the spring and summer in a straw hat. Everyone wore them and on more refined occasions, guys would don a Panama hat. Wearing a lid today makes you stand out.
One thing I know is diamond shaped faces are considered highly attractive. Also I think you want to lessen the angles. I have been told a pinched brimmed hat will balance your chin.
Very nice! While I've become comfortable in a trilby, straw fedora and flat cap, the step up to a boater is a big one. You pull it off very well. Some people I've seen overdo the outfit and look like a walking anachronism or an actor who wandered off set. Others I've seen dress like a slob in sandals or torn jeans and throw a classic hat on as if that somehow transforms them to instant cool. It doesn't say, "I've got attitude", it says, "I look like a hot mess and I like it". Your outfit is casual but neat and doesn't detract from your boater, but rather, provides a good foundation for it. I get a sense you wear it in style, not to send a message. Nice. After watching, I'm inclined to give it a try as well. I've seen a few modern day dandies and hipster relics wearing huge boaters with bright, flamboyant bands. I wonder what the most understated versions look like. A smaller, softer look with a muted band. Now that's something I could see wearing.

If you don’t want a hat to look like a costume, two things apply. 1 - don’t cheap out on the hat, buy a real one, 2 - match your shoes. That boater you have chosen, because of the thinness of the brim looks like it was purchased at Disneyland.
