    After Ben said to save 10% each time, I immediately went to put 10% away in my savings! Thanks for good advice :) I've also been loving these Q&As and I never want them to end

    These episodes are so insightful! Money is one of the issues that couples divorce on. It's so important to be on the same page and goals have to be aligned by both parties.

    This is great advice for people in relationships AND not in relationships and looking for financial advice. I think you guys hit the nail on the head when you mentioned how people view a "luxury item" and the "worth" of something very differently. Super informative and loved it!

    Great advice guys! The way my husband and I really budgeted our money, was for me to sit down and really take a look at what we make. Once I came up with a plan, we looked at it together and discussed if it would work. This helped us realize what we could afford and what we couldn’t afford. We also discovered what we felt comfortable with in paying for our mortgage. Believe it or not, a 15 year mortgage may hurt in the beginning, but the amount of interest being paid will be much cheaper in the end. Sometimes a job advancement is needed in order to pay off debts. That can be hard because it may require moving to another area. My husband and I did this, and man was it hard. It has definitely paid off, and our budget is working, but it’s always going to be a work in progress. My personal advice is to look at what you make, and like Ben said, look at your necessities and wants. That I agree, it will really help in figuring out what is within budget and what’s not. I’m not an expert by any means, just trying to give advice from personal experience. If you are married or dating, communication is key!! I don’t like to talk budget, but when I do, I’m more aware of where my money is going rather than guessing, which makes me feel better about our budget. They aren’t one size fits all by any means, but do what works best and what’s logical. It’s tough, but worth it.

    This was my favorite episode. My goals and my boyfriend's goals are on opposite sides of the spectrum. I'm trying to save for a forever home and he is spending every penny he has on new technologies, useless subscription boxes, sound systems, and anything that's more of a want and not a need. when i ask why he needs all of this stuff he says its just "nice" to have. and he doesn't Each time I want to talk about finances and balancing and our future goals he avoids the subject 100%. I'm at a point where this finance part of our relationship will make or break us.

    Thanks so much for being so open about finances in your relationship!!
    For anyone looking for a tool to help with budgeting, I got married about a year ago and my husband and I use the Goodbudget app to track our spending. We sat down together and broke down the necessities, wants and savings buckets in the more specific categories like eating out, groceries, entertainment, generosity, etc. It helps so much to be able to organize our expenses into these categories as we make purchases so we know how much we have left to spend in each category throughout the month. At the end of the month, we review our reports to see how we're doing against what we initially budgeted. It makes it easier to get on the same page and talk about our finances when we both have visibility into our budget.

    As far as the prenups go, they make no sense in situations where neither party has any significant assets to protect.
    In the case of my husband and I (fellow Korean and “white” couple👋🏼) he is 14 years older than me and has quite a few valuable assets that he’s accumulated through his career. Not to mention he’s been divorced and I don’t blame him for wanting to take precaution with things he’s worked so long for when he’s lost a lot in the past.
    Prenups can bring up a whole host of emotions but if you look at it as a form of insurance (we buy car and home insurance without the intent of ever having an accident) then it makes more logical sense.

    Loved this video. The only thing that I wholly disagree on is getting a store credit card, ESPECIALLY in the beginning. My first credit card was with Discover with a limit $500 and a low rate. It was PERFECT!! And then....I got a couple of store credit cards...And with their enticing "rewards" and uber high APR, it was a horrible decision...

    • @frmheadtotoe
      @frmheadtotoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This definitely comes with some huge IFs! If you are financially responsible and already regularly shopping at that location, plus able to pay off your monthly bills in full it is an available option for those who have no credit and nobody to co-sign. I don’t recommend it as a “forever” card and they have high penalties for missing bills so it can definitely backfire! Once some positive credit is established it will be easier to open a regular credit union-type credit card which is our best recommendation. :)

    • @lttlekrn
      @lttlekrn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually agreed with Jen on the store credit cards. If you pay it off right away, you not only build credit but earn awesome store perks.

    • @runwaychick7
      @runwaychick7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still disagree. I think that those who have already had credit cards and have a history of handling them well can get store cards...But handing a store card to an 18-year old who's never had a credit card before is a horrible idea. Really anyone who has never had the responsibility of a credit card. Because maybe they *think* they can be responsible with it, but it's not the same thing as having a *history* of being responsible with one. Especially when it's a card that has flashy rewards (but incredibly high APR and basically interest on top of interest). I have a barclay card and a synchrony card. They have catchy rewards but awwffulllyyy high interest rates and extra charges. It's better to opt for cards from different industries outside of retail.
