A couple of alternative : Instead of using foam around the plastic cup you could use electric tape. It's a trick used to avoid sound wave reflection on metal basket on speakers units . Instead of using cotton alternatively you can use one or more layers of make up remover cotton disk cut to the size to get an even or precise ajustable all around dampening.
Can I just solder female jack to the cable that you just cut ( outside the housing)? That would be easier. And what replacement cable you planning to use?
Yes you can add female jacks to the cables. I first did that and it works great. I just finished a single cable mod which I like very much. You can see a few photos at: www.head-fi.org/threads/takstar-hf-580-planar-headphones.904483/page-51 This way I use just a plain 1 meter 3.5mm male to 90 degree male which is much lighter than the original
