These review videos have been invaluable in helping me get into Commander just because of how you take the time in these reviews to still drop tidbits of what efficient and worthwhile commander deck construction should look like.
Really good point of looking into the older decks first. There's so much out there. If you're looking for a pre-con take your time.

Im going to be honest, i think the zombie deck might actually be the best out of the box precon they have ever done. I'd give that bad boy an A+, as i believe that deck sets a precedent going forwards. Wilhelt to me is a perfect precon power level
Edit: also, holy crap, planar portal is at $28 now? That deck is immaculate, and so easy to upgrade. Everyone should own that deck, it just works out of the box, and it gets even better with some upgrades, of which kaldheim has alot of them

@@seisner6655 Literally 0 surprises. And the cool thing is, it has so many pieces for infinite combos. So you could just make some basic tweaks to have the pieces for those combos and have a deck that is a comfortable 6 on the power scale for like $60 total. Hell if you just add Acererak your deck has a 2 card infinite combo in it.

The Wilhelt deck is something like 2/3 of the way to the deck I was already workshopping when I saw him previewed. Having it all in a single box really helps.

Honestly I like that there are less foils in these precons. Mtg foil quality is simply horrible and I avoid them at all costs.

I recently got back into Magic after almost 2 decades. These decks have been an amazing way to get my foot back in the door.
In the summer of 2019 I was getting back into Magic after leaving in 2005, and friends invited me to an EDH night. Imagine the look on the store owner's face when I asked if they still had a 2018 precon... in July 2019, lol. Today, a new player will find a great selection of Commanders and color combinations at any store. I really love it. Well, two years ago I went into my binder and built a Rubinia Soulsinger Bant deck, which is still my #1 deck today, as a mid-power Bant Pod/Populate deck.
I really hope they knock it out of the park with Kamigawa precons, I was surprised with how much I liked the D&D set
That zombie deck is outstanding, looking at the list it definitely feels like a new players deck, it has actual mana fixing and some very solid cards that all fit, absolutely picking one up

I can attest to it, it's great. Though I bought it mainly for the various cards to go into my already existing zombie deck, it's a steal if you're a fan of zombies. Or just getting into commander, at least that's my opinion. I hope you have fun with it if you pick it up, looks great!

Great note about checking out the old ones! I’m very into some of the stuff from the zombie deck for my Scarab God deck, but I got a few set boosters and pulled Wilhelt, and grabbed the 6 or so other cards I wanted for cheap. A lot of the good reprints in there are cards I already own, but they’re a great starting point for someone looking to build a deck like that! I am thinking of a counters deck at some point, so I’ll check in on the price of the Coven Counters deck when I do.
Me and my wife like to just play Preconstructed-Decks. We got 14 precon commander decks now and we just roll a dice which one we are playing. The most of them are really balanced and it's more a matter of luck then the power of the deck. The only one I needed to modify/balance was mystic intellect (2019)
I just bought a Innistrad: Midnight Hunt precon deck today after a gameshop caught my eye. I haven't played in years but I decided to pick this one up, and went home to go through my old magic cards and strengthen the build as much as I possibly could. As luck would have it, I mostly have forest and plains cards which matches the precon deck I bought, and strengthened the build quite a lot I think. I'm gonna try it out and see how well it works soon.
If you like it and think it’s fun, and have friends that play, totally worth it even if the financial value isn’t there. I would get it, but it’s not like I have any friends, so I’m gonna watch this and go back to crying under my covers.👍

I just started playing again and this video taught me I need to go pick up some arcane signets for my commander decks since they're not $15 apiece anymore lmao
Sadly the only LGS we have out here in the desert marks up instead of down because "where else are you going to get them locally". So Card Kingdom has been my main source for purchases while stationed out here in the Oasis
Ultimately, your store is only hurting their own cash flow if nobody is buying their product, so the joke is on them.
You could always buy a sprinter and work for half the rate usps/ups and your lgs will be able to sell without as much markup. Or move to one of the many cities across the continent. I'm sure the homeless in commiefornia will welcome a whiney brat like you.

And you act like I have the choice to be stationed where I want. The plus side to that is I interact with LGS's across the nation so it's very easy to weed out corrupt ones.

I’m kinda pissed that they spoiled the cool curse-tribal RUB Commander, just to end up having a GW and a BU deck. Lynde and all of the Midnight Hunt Commander red cards are set/collector booster exclusives

Thank you for making these vids! Thanks to your help, I've graduated from the gateway drug of Ranar and Brago flickering in the kaldheim precon, to durdling for 10+ minutes on EACH of my turns after I upgraded it to Roon of the Hidden Realm. I've even triggered a table flip after gaining 118 life in one turn and then casting cosmic intervention the third time my opponents tried to board wipe me!
It's sad that there are only 2 for this Innistrad, then again we'll be getting crimson vow pretty soon

Sound advice. I just picked up the Coven Counters pre-con for $16 basically just for the mana base and the new printed legendaries for a Kaltida, Dawnheart Prime human tribal I'm building. Can't beat that!

Please do a review, as of now, of the value of the previous and still easily available commander decks from previous years (value in terms of fun, finance and etc) ! I'm waiting on this to grab one!
If the trend of every set having a pair of precons and there still being a big yearly release of 4-5 decks at once continues, a great way to differentiate the big release would in fact be to put stuff like shocklands in 'em, and retaining the current price.
It's a fool's dream but it's a dream all the same.

The new precons have been pretty solid. I bought Prosper's and it's really good out of the box. Good reprints too.
easily my favorite precon deck in a while, I always end up being targeted because there is just so much value and synergy. Makes for fun games!
These videos have been invaluable to me thru the years, but I would like to see a bit more about gameplay and less about financial value. It is really helpful to know what the value cards are, but as someone with a handful of decks already, do these pieces fit into my existing decks? etc. There's more here about how much cheaper previous commander decks are than the strategies of each of these decks. I'm grateful for all your work. :)
I remember finding your channel way back when I started actually picking MTG back up again. You made getting back into MTG (even for someone who prefers digital over paper) much less intimidating. So thanks for that, and for making everything confusing about MTG more accessible so I could just buy what I actually wanted.
Hi Professor! I bought the Undead Unleashed precon and it was the first Zombie EDH deck I have ever built. I give this precon 5 gold stars. I had lots of odd Zombie cards in my bulk like Noxious Ghoul and Vengeful Dead, so upgrading was easier than normal. I agree with you that $40 is a lot but I am biased as I love tribal. What I appreciate about you and your channel is that you are a defender of the everyday Magic player, like no one else. I am a lifelong fan, good sir. Thank you for what you do for the MtG community.
I had a lot of fun playing the Coven Counters deck, and think Leinore is going to be a sleeper hit over the next year. She's far more impactful than she looks at first glance; the center piece of a well oiled human tribal deck. Wizards prints humans in virtually every set so Leinore can only get better.

I learned my lesson all the way back in 2017: NEVER wait on a precon. You never know when there's going to be a chase card that inflates the decks to ludicrous degrees. I'm going to have to shell out over $200 just to get ONE of the 2017 decks, let alone all four that I need for my collection.
The rate that wotc was releasing commander decks in 2017 is completely different than the rate theyre printing them at now
I actually really like Coven Counters, a few edits and it’s even better. Shalai and Sigarda make good editions
The mana fixing actually looks great, some of those cards are hard to get as singles (atleast in my country) for a reasonable price

I got both for 50$ at my local gamestore. LGS is the way to go!
$50 together or per deck? My LGS is charging $45 per deck which is more expensive than at a Wal Mart or online. I prefer to support the LGS but if I can get it cheaper elsewhere I'd rather spend less.
Honestly I have been avoiding the precons and instead building my own decks from scratch. I’ve been having a blast during quarantine building Jank decks with fun themes that are budget because I got bored with the competitiveness at the table and I find that a fun, jank, cooky decks that no one has thought of are more fun to play specially if I can save some money. Hey I recently made a fun $20 one
I like the precons because they give me a theme to build around. Using them in their base is fun for when you play new players but i enjoy building around a set theme. plus it gives me a good variety of decks.

@@Shad0wgun this pretty much. I buy the precons because it already has many cards I would wanna put in a deck like that anyway, and I don't have to order so many individual cards. My routine is more or less like this: buy the precon, take out like 15-20 cards, take around 10 or so cards I have in my binder and only buy the missing few. It's a lot less of an effort to get a playable deck like that imo. Although I also enjoy building decks completely from scratch, but this has its own charme tbh
edit: also, some precons play with themes/commanders that I would have otherwise never considered due to not knowing the commander or certain synergies
the thing with the older precons is that the good ones still cost a fortune. personally, I didn't buy my Edgar Markov deck as a precon, because Teferi's protection made it cost too much, I bought it as singles and have upgraded it over time and yes, now that Teferi's protection is reprinted, it is in there now.
I echo the outcry of the rest of the comment secon when I say I wish the commanders came in non-foil because the foiling is terrible. not as bad as Commander legends foil pringles mind you, but still bad. I've been lucky with my commanders, they have been double sleeved as soon as I got them or opened the box.
For real, the prices on some of them are insane!

I’ve already preordered the Undead Unleashed one. I’ve been wanting to get into commander for a long time but don’t have a group to play with so had only ever made a list of cards I wanted for a zombie tribal deck. This precon is perfect for me as many of the reprints inside are what I wanted anyway and some of the new ones I really like too. I have some cards already so I can upgrade it and plan to get some more singles to finish it. Excited to finally be able to play commander!
As someone who just recently got back into Magic after a 20 year hiatus (I was in elementary school and once Yu-Gi-Oh came out, suddenly none of my friends played Magic anymore, lol), I appreciate this channel so much. A perfect blend of tutorials about the game and different formats/play styles, as well as product reviews that look at value and market trends for the game as a whole and not just “this is great, buy now!” Thanks for everything, Professor 🙏🏻
I'm positive my LGS won't be marking down Commander decks. They almost never mark down anything.

When you said about the Kaldheim decks, I was confused, as I couldn't remember what they were.
Then Reap the Tides was shown, I was like "oh, those ones", which is bad, because I actually bought both of them. Yet, after buying Strixhaven decks, D&D decks, along with singles from various other sets, I find that I forget which cards I do own.
I get you, it's funny cause Reap the Tides is a Commander Legends precon
super glad to finally see a good Zombie precon, my favorite tribe deck to play in many formats. excited to get this and use some of the cards for my Zombie commander deck!
I gotta say, I never would've considered buying the old decks without you. I ended up buying the Symbiotic Swarm Commander Deck, trusting your word that the older ones are still playable and not just.... bad, and I'm having insane fun with it. Upgraded it for another 30 ish bucks and now I have a deck that frequently and consistently puts up a beefy 9/9 commander with way too many broken keywords like Indestructible. It's so much fun.
This is the best set they've released in the past 4 years, takes me back to the original Innistrad reminds me of playing pre-release back in college.
I'm really liking the manabases in these, they're only a step down of what i would use if i didn't want to splurge on shocks or multiplayer lands and stuff
The first time in a while that I bought a PreCon. But the Zombie Deck played so well out of the box and Zombies being one of the best supportet tribes in the game, it's easy to upgrade it without going bankrupt.

I feel these commander decks have a huge aesthetic with horror, gothic, werewolves, vampires. I am pretty sure there are a lot of people like me and my who have been waiting for easy access to gothic horror themed cards. Granted i was hoping for one of the decks to be wolf themed but witches/warlocks/humans and zombies/evil experiments/undead are awesome.

It's an odd feeling, seeing so many commander decks and sets getting made. While I was shopping for groceries last night I saw all of the new set packs, decks etc, went to look at it and ultimately decided not to get anything. I still have precons from earlier this year that are either still in box or have been played once or twice.
While I'm certainly not complaining that we're getting so much product (queue the pic of the decks prof was showing off for cheap), it's feeling harder than ever to try to keep up with things. Thanks for the great overview, and for keeping up with everything prof!

I just read through the decklists, and the zombie deck looks like an awesome base. There's a single or two from it I'd like to add into my Grimgrin zombie EDH deck, but as a whole it looks like a phenomenal way to start zombie tribal. Plus the improved manabases are legitimately nice.

I wish the G/W humans deck had one of the Drown in Dream style cards where you can get both modes if you control your commander. The zombie deck was already better but cards like that just widened the gap between the two.
That zombie commander and all his buddies are going to slip in real nicely with my already existing zombie deck. Beautiful line up, was a perfect upgrade for my deck. Love it.

Surprised that the Madness themed commander deck is still around that price range. Picked it up for around $35 March 2020.

Speaking of commander. I made a commander deck for Nymris to gain advantage of using instants and the flash effect. It’s pretty fun to just go full gas with a full hand instances.

Wilhelt deck is very much worth it for me! I love it and i’ve only played one game with it and i lost that one but it was so much fun to play

I was in the middle of making a Golgari Zombie deck, and then saw Undead Unleashed, luckily I hadn't gotten many of the cards in it yet, and it had a lot I needed. Now I've got a Parallel lives which I'll be slotting into the Quantum Quandrix precon.
I play very well with my innistrad midnight hunt deck but some people may think other wise
It really looks like they've perfected this product line at this point.

Bought the green white one for 25 as well as the blue white spirits one in anticipation for bloomburrow the blue foil in spirits basically makes offspring that fly and are spirits whenever you play non legendary creatures might be fun budget strategy of spending not sure if the green white will hold up the test of time but spirits from the other innistrad is sweet to me at least solid list with Geist of st. Traft too 🐠😇 with some good pulls in bloomburrow 🌠🐠hopefully even more interesting and fun
