George Strait has remained faithful to country music. I can't say the same for the Grand Ole Opry.

Exactly! Thank you! Finally, somebody who gets it and shares my view, which just happens to be the TRUTH! I'm a big fan of country, but I can't tell you any of the current top ten people, songs, etc. I tried to watch the Opry recently to share it with my young daughter. I was a little younger than she when I had the privilege of being backstage at the Opry, visiting Opry land Hotel, & getting to be in the audience for a show. I recall being aware of the history, despite my youth. My uncle sang back up with the likes of the late, great Dottie West and Martha Carson, the latter whom I thought was like a great aunt. I actually cried & had to turn off the TV because I'm not sure what those folks were singing, but it sure wasn't country music! Furthermore, I don't know who's in charge of the Opry now, but how DARE you put the circus acts in the circle where Aunt Martha, Patsy, Minnie, George, Roy, and Johnny all stood. The circle has been broken.

2 other GREAT legends were not members of the Opry. That would be Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. These 2 guys with a few others are credited with creating the " Bakersfield Sound" and their great careers stand on their own without being Opry members. Nashville also has a "Good Ol' Boy Network" and they were not happy that Buck and Merle cranked out Number 1 Hits while bypassing their System.

This is a loss for the Opry, not for George. George has remained true to his fans, and the roots of country music. More so than what can be said for the Grand Old Opry. I still listen to George Strait music weekly. I don't know the last time I thought about the Opry.

George Strait played on the Opry stage in March, 1991 on a Thursday night during the annual County Music Radio Seminar. I happened to be back stage at that concert and remember it well. Although it was not the Saturday night Grand Old Opry, he did play the Opry stage that night.

Just my opinion, which like everyone else's, doesn't really amount to much, but the Opry is a Nashville club, not necessarily a country music club. It revolves around those who live in that area, and are willing to make the commitment. And we have seen newer artists who have been made members who don't come close to fitting the bill.
George is a Texas guy, born and bred. He's not willing to commit to 26 dates/year, which I can understand. No one in country music today, or on the horizon, will come close to his accomplishments. He doesn't need the Opry, and that's fine.

Don’t get me wrong I love the Grand Ole Opry! And I love Tennessee… especially Nashville! I’ve been there a few times. And being from a musical family I was raised on all types of music. But I listen to country music the most. I was even able to go watch a show at the Opry that was held for high school bands from all over the country for a band competition in Nashville. I was a freshman that year back in 1983. It was AMAZING to be there!!! And the show was just as AMAZING as being in that hallowed hall! But I do have to say thank you to George for staying here at home in Texas. Texans do love to travel but we don’t like to be gone from home very long. I’m very glad that he got to play at the Opry!!! But thank you George for staying with us! We love having you here at home!

I’ve heard about the “commitment” clause where members were required to play a given number of shows a year, but is that mandatory for all members? The reason I ask is because looking over the list of current members, I see artists who seem to always be there (Bill Anderson, Lorrie Morgan, Ricky Skaggs, Jeannie Seely…just to name a few), but I can spot several big name acts that rarely appear (Barbara Mandrell , Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks….just to name a few). I know that they all have appeared on the show at one time or another, but not even on a semi regular basis.

The answer seems to be very straightforward......he doesn't need to for any reason. All I hear in the requirements is that they are in control of a large percentage of your time. George has always been very committed to home and family. He has never let his ranch go unattended or his clear view of what is important. Once he decided to be a traditional country artist over a rock and roll singer he never looked back and has stayed very true to that decision. Through it all he has proven his decisions have been good ones and never strayed from what works....I doubt there will ever be a George Strait show that isn't sold out

I am a huge George Strait fan. I wish the Opry would make amendments to their rules about making regular appearances. One reason I say that is because another favorite country singer of mine, Garth Brooks, is an opry member and yet Garth doesn’t play there regularly. Yet they let Garth remain an opry member. It’s just a weird rule in my opinion. They should look into changing that rule a little bit. And they should get on better terms with George Strait.

I'm with Alan! I don't even listen to the so-called "Country" music station on the radio anymore. Just because it's sung by people who happened to grow up in Southern states with a little bit of a drawl, doesn't make it Country. I know that musicians have to change gears sometimes to stay in the limelight, but the genre itself should be clear (in my opinion). In the 70's, we didn't lump Disco, Pop, & Rock into the same catagory!

Strange standards and requirements for membership, if I may say so...
Ideally, the only rational criteria ought to be the measure of the artist, his connection with the fans, and record sales.
But George Strait is THE KING OF COUNTRY MUSIC and needs no validation, even from a hallowed body like the Grand Ole Opry.
There are 195 countries in the world and I'm sure everyone loves George Strait.

I’ve been to the Opry several times. I enjoyed Minnie, Roy, Porter, and many other artists over the years. I’ve always thought the frequency of performance rules was BS. Because most of the performers present were at the end of their careers, and had given up on touring for family and economics. It was always good to see those performers, but they can’t advertise all the performers as some would cause such uproar. Most of time most performers only do 1-2 songs in each segment of the show. The show starts with Bluegrass, moves to more traditional country, the outlaw, and finally rockabilly. Then they do a second show the same way

The Opry today is a far cry from what it used to be and has allowed the 'New Country' inside it's circle. That is not the way to preserve the true Country Music sound we have grown to love.

The Grand Ole Opry needs George Strait more than George Strait needs the Grand Ole Opry. The Grand Ole Opry has laid a few eggs over the years, asking Elvis Presley to leave and never come back was one of those times.

The Opry making that statement, “The Opry considers those who seek THEM out”… get off your ego driven high horse and find it in your heart to consider the Legends who shaped and carved the path in Country Music. Waylon was banned, Willie gave up membership, and King George does his own thing, making 50+ #1 Hit Songs. I’d say they did pretty good without the Opry. LOL! Let’s go, honor these greats.

  • @JohnGadzaJr.

Basically, George Strait does not need the Grand Ole Opry membership in order to make him feel special in the country music business. As a Texas resident himself who has remained living outside of San Antonio throughout his illustrious country music career, it just wasn't feasible for George Strait to become a full time Grand Ole Opry member. Even the King of Country Music himself had turned down a membership as well as an induction offer to the Grand Ole Opry. He has no beef with the organization but he felt that he could not make a realistic number of appearances as required to become a new member over there. Sadly, it is Grand Ole Opry's loss and not for George Strait. Even another Texas resident Willie Nelson is not a Grand Ole Opry member either even though he was a full time member for a while when he was living in Nashville in the 1960s decade. Willie Nelson eventually gave up his Grand Ole Opry membership when he moved back to Texas in 1972. Unfortunately, the Grand Ole Opry itself is not so grand anymore these days like it used to be. The honest truth is that George Strait is way too good for the Grand Ole Opry stage anyways. There are also some other country music artists as well as singers and songwriters who are not the Grand Ole Opry members either. George Strait has always been pure country no matter what and he does not need any enhancements whatsoever as he is the real deal. George Strait did not need the Grand Ole Opry stage to make him a country music superstar as he was already a self made legend in the industry when he became famous all by himself without all of that Grand Ole Opry membership. Between him and Alan Jackson, they will always be the Kings of Country Music to me. Otherwise, enough said and that's all I need to say.

The Opry is not about great Country singers anymore,it is about how beautiful and built you look these days,it has very little to do with how great the voice is and it is no longer even real Country Singing anymore, they really did get away with murder on music row.😢💔

There is no need to bash the Opry in this. I went there. They discussed the reason George did not join the Opry. And yes...it was HIS choice. It was because he didn't feel he could give them the time and effort to play as the requirements are. It's as simple as that. They discussed it, he didn't feel he could give them the time that was required, so he decided not to do it.

The 26 show [not week] commitment is only for new artists that have joined the opry membership in the late 2000s when they changed that rule. All earlier artists are grandfathered into the old commitment which was far less and will be grandfathered until death.
This is why people like Garth Brooks, who lives in the Nashville area, doesn't perform there 26x a year.

I have always been a supporter of independence and the choice not to conform to the expectations of the masses. With all the division nowadays and constant bombardment from all sides of society to belong to this group or that group, Left or Right, pro-this or anti-that, I'm glad Mr. Strait has remained true to his style of country music and not allowed an establishment like the Opry to dictate his success. He has stayed original to himself and the States of Texas and has shown his true class of character by embracing both sides of our southern border and culture.

George doesn’t need the Opry, it’s the other way around. But with the direction that the current country music genre is taking, I don’t know why any real country music entertainer would want to go down that rabbit hole. Nashville has changed way too much for most true country music fans.

I appreciate George Strait and all his decades of true, authentic country music. He chose not to join the Grand Ole Opry for one reason, it was told you had to appear a certain amount if times live there every year. George stated that he lived in Texas and could not meet that requirement with his home being in Texas, as well as his massively busy touring schedule at the time. I respect t him for that decision. I have seen George over 10 times in concert, and he never disappoints me. I miss seeing him in concert as he doesnt tour as extensively as before, but I do respect his decision to do so for his own health. He is a true country gentleman, and he is keeping it real. God bless you, George, and keep on being you. That is perfect for your true fans. It is the Grand Ole Opry's loss, in my opinion.
