In the original Red Alert, Tesla Tanks were a fun gimmick unit; since they were good against everything except aircraft, and they backed that with decent mobility and average range.
In the original Red Alert 2, Tesla Tanks were basically less armored Rhino Tanks with 1 gimmick; they could shoot over walls. They lost the range that made them useful in the original Red Alert, making them really poorly optimized units. This shoot over walls mechanic BARELY mattered except in a few fringe cases in the campaign mode; outside of that, Rhinos were almost always a better choice (more cost effective, better armor, generally more universal) but in addition; playing as Russia to get Tesla Tanks, meant you were opting to forfeit Demo Trucks or Desolators as much better options.
When looking at the new balance change; it seems all they did was restore the range of the Tesla Tank, back to it's RA1 counterpart. Which is roughly twice the length of the original shot... certainly makes them more useful, however there is a drawback. Remember how I said "they are good against everything except aircraft?" that still applies in RA2, meaning the only effective counter to them in the balance, is Rocketeers, Siege Copters, Kirovs and Floating Discs. Yuri might be able to do some sneaky Magnetron shit; but they outrange Yuri Clones and a Mastermind; and while a group of Battle Fortresses might be able to compete... it's hard to say exactly. From what I read in the patch notes; the Tesla Tank has a 50% damage penalty against Heavy Armor; which does hinder it's ability to deal with Battle Fortresses and Apocalypse Tanks... but at the end of the day; it just feels like they tried to make it the Soviet version of the Prism Tank.
Still, this is a game that has Prism tanks, which are far more ridiculous. I think they just give players a reason to use the faction, as opposed to defaulting to Desolators if you wanna play a Soviet faction.

@@nijamkaj They were added in the Aftermath and Counter Strike Expansions.
In Counter Strike, they were just modified Radar Jammers that could shoot Tesla Bolts and only appeared in the extra mission "Legacy of Tesla" (though there was a glitch to make Skirmish mode Radar Jammers function as Tesla Tanks), but in Aftermath, they became fully functional unique units with a new sprite and everything. And they were honestly pretty damn solid units. When combined with a few Mammoth Tanks, and Heavy Tanks; it could be tough to break the line, because while Tesla Tanks in RA1 had less defense then the Heavy Tank, they did way more damage to everything, only really losing to Aircraft which they couldn't target. They were also decently fast units, though they were expensive costing 1500$ credits.
In addition, Red Alert also had the original version of the Tesla Trooper; though back then they were called "Shock Troopers" instead.
What kind of a mod is this, though? It's not mentioned in the description.
@@Asidders They are playing Red Alert 2 via CNC Net, which allows for easier online play of Yuri's revenge, and has an abundance of QoL changes to the system (even if you don't play online, I recommend it just for the better everything else in Skirmish), one of which is an option called "Rebalanced YR" which adjusts unit prices, damages, and a boatload of other things to try to make the game a bit more on terms with things. Not everything is tweaked, but it certainly makes things better then the vanilla experience. The Tesla Tank buff was an attempt in the recent rebalance to make them viable.
Getting CNC Net setup isn't that difficult, but if you search around, I'm sure you'll be able to get it working.
I prefer Libya over Iraq. The desolators never really did much for me but the demolition trucks have always been a lot of fun.
Video makes Iron Curtain spam look more OP than the tanks, TBH.

honestly looked the same as always, just team mates where desperetly trying to save key structures with force sheild, which if you use then your at lower power for about 1 min. so slower production and no radar

I used to love Tesla Shock troops because my opponent would run over my troops with tanks. Tesla Tanks were pretty weak at that time not much good against other tanks. I am happy to see they have been been upgraded.

They've been overbuffed a little bit too much especially in team games when allies can cover you early game

@@hijiriyukari They also can attack on the move and have increased range. The only thing holding them back is that they have 50% reduced damage to vehicles with heavy armor (grizzly, rhino, apoc, bfort, etc), however splash damage somewhat mitigates this.

Nevermind, that splash is some Prism Tank sh*t with a way-too-durable armor. Splashes 50% Damage, yes... but to 5 targets? That's still 250% increased damage in a Zerg Rush game like RA2, damn.
-I think it's better this way. Tesla had a massive problem with range on Vanilla an it's too costly to counter Rhino/Grizzly/Lasher. It's more tactical now and doesnt totally broke the game also gets countered by the usual way.-
@@defaulted9485 the range on top of splash makes it a little overboard. Reverting the range to something more sensible would be ideal.
I remember playing this game for two straight weeks (10-16h daily) with my friend when we were in high school. I grabbed my PC, went to his house and lived there basically :D.

Tiberian Sun's atmosphere is unbeatable. It may not have the best gameplay, or the best overall soundtrack, or the best graphics, or the best story, or the best ... well anyway, Tiberian Sun's atmosphere is just soooooo good. So so so very good. :)

@@alexkubrat3868 well, forewarning: while they definitely did amp up the campiness a lot in RA2's cutscenes, base Tiberian Sun still is pretty cheeseball at times. :)
Firestorm is a lot more serious, though.
Honestly nothing beats Tiberian dawn, landing on that beach with your gdi troops.
And the intro scenes on both sides.

Splash AND range buff together is a bit OP.
They should keep the range buff but remove the splash ability since thats the entire point of promoting a Tesla Tank. Right now its like Prism but has better armor.
It isn't like prism because prism does shitloads more damage to buildings and have shitloads more range. Tesla tanks are only this good because superweapons are a thing.
Prism has much higher range, much higher dam vs building. Iirc 3 normal prism tank can clear the base within 10 sec.. Tesla cant
i think its fine because by being Russia to get Tesla Tanks you are sacrificing going a different Soviet country for other country-specific units, you know, like, Desolators

Its less because its a bad unit in the OG game and more because its kind of a redundant and expensive version of the Rhino, its main advantage over the Rhino is its damage but thats just on regular units not Buildings.

Tesla tank is so good with cncnet rebalance, it makes Russia a very competitive faction now. Though, I think they need a little nerf like -1 range or -1 bounce target or -50% damage against medium armor or 15 bounce damage instead of 30. OR JUST ALL OF THAT XD

Well i noticed that if the other side had a yuri it can be countered with flying discs.
-1 range hurts their viability against Yuri and Allies, they are already too expensive and you forego getting the superior Desolators. They are not as "overbuffed" as you think. They still have a lot of weaknesses and Desolators are still the superior Soviet country special unit. Read my comment above.

Veteran tesla tanks were scary before... with fire-while-moving capability... yeah they definitely scarier.

I think you meant to say Elite Tesla Tanks (Highest Level). Tesla Tanks had 5 major problems with their vanilla (original) counterpart:
1) they have the same range as Conscripts (range of 4)
2) they did not auto shoot
3) costs $1200
4) country specific unit (Russia)
5) outclassed by immediately available Rhino Tanks, which every Soviet country could produce. Rhinos were cheaper at $900 and could auto shoot with longer range at 5.75.
Yes Elite Tesla Tanks were incredibly good before the patch, they had a range of 6 and the lightning bolt could arc to 3 additional targets however, that was only IF you could get them there. Otherwise they were straight up useless, hence no actual competitive player would ever pick Russia. This is why Tesla Tanks needed to be buffed in the first place.
But how to lv up tesla tank before.. Because it has low armor( abit better than prism) short range, not to much strong vs anything( except troopl

Your Yuri opponent used maglevs with gatlin tanks trying to destroy your testa tanks? Supposed to use master minds or Yuri clones to take them over. My copy of the game only worked on XP so haven't played on newer windows/didn't know it was possible. Looking forward to seeing more battles.

I'm a total noob at strategy games with an apm of about 30 so take this with a grain of salt. Tesla troopers were and are my favourite unit in this game by a considerable margin
Vanilla troopers sadly are pretty terrible and only because they have such piss for range.
Feels weird to see these games with this insane speed setting, back in my day it was alot slower, plus the handicap of non broadband internet, appriciate the content but it feels..wrong =D
