    The only thing I think you got wrong was about Loki's 'breaking in' to the priests house. The situation would technically be justified, because he believed at the point of breaching that the priest's live was in danger.

  • @theohaegele9011
    @theohaegele9011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I definitely agree Loki is meant to show someone who has risen above trauma, and I don't even think it's just "speculation". it seems clear within the text of the film that Loki was molested by a member of the clergy during his time in the Catholic orphanage, he says to the priest that he'd love to hurt him, probably as revenge, and calls him a "chickenhawk", a term for an old man who sexually preys on young men, which seems to be pretty clearly projection. The fact that his trauma would come from the church itself seems extremely fitting, a reversal of "the war we wage on God" and an echo of Keller, who begins as a devout Christian and becomes a violent torturer, a source of the very same trauma to a man who is functionally a child.

  • @supercupcakewizard
    @supercupcakewizard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    I agree that there is certain moral ambiguity in the film, however it arises because both Dover and Loki reach the children. Although Dover doesn't succeed and is caught by Mrs. Jones he proved that Alex did know more than he let on. Dover was right in a sense, but wrong in another because Alex isn't the kidnapper but he knew who was. What makes this film so great is that everyone is both wrong and right, both morally upright but also questionable. This is how humans are: a moral grey. What makes this film amazing however is that it's a question hidden within the genre, something to think about and seriously challenge your own morals with. Great job overall.

      @@Zaz5y Did you not hear what he said to him in the parking lot? He DID know, and it's very likely that he was the one to deliver the kids to Mrs. Jones. Frankly, he deserved all the torture he received. Maybe he was a victim too and that's why he became so fucked, but that doesn't mean you aren't responsible for what you do. That is a dangerous way of thinking. Most scumbags on this planet were probably made that way from some trauma from their past, but it doesn't change the fact that they're scumbags.

      @@Zaz5y Suffering psychosis can result in a scumbag. That's my point. And no matter how somebody becomes a scumbag, they are still indeed a scumbag. And it's of my belief that seeking revenge against said scumbag isn't just understandable, but morally just.

    I think this is a very gripping movie while also being interesting on a psychological level. We are able to see how different people respond to tragedy and how their relationships between them affected them during the hunt for the two missing girls. The mother began blaming him for not taking care of the family which was also part of the reason why he felt even more compelled to take that extra step to find his daughter.

  • @ostryy831

    One of my favourite parts of the film is the scene when Dover is praying and it is the our Father and he just can't get the "And forgive those who trespass against us " out of him because it conflicts with the fact that he cannot bring himself to forgive Alex Jones. Keller knows he is going against his religous morals and it shows the conflict within him

It is his interrogation of Alex that leads him to go to the aunt int the first place, for Loki to go there in the end, and his recent visit which caused the aunt to be dealing with Anna when Loki gets there. Something bad did happen to Loki. He tells the priest he spent 6 years (I think) in a boys home and it would be a pleasure beating the priest.

    I think a good slant on this movie would be to discuss the relationship to food each character has. Lokis first intro is with fortune cookies and obviously the movie starts with the hunting of a dear which is later consumed when the girls go missing. I haven't seen it in a little over a year, but as I recall, it lacked subtext. It did a great job building atmosphere, and creating suspense, but it didn't seem to add up to anything. It had a narrative that was complex and needed some explaining, but once you cracked that surface level, it seemed hollow inside. I don't want to say anything negative about Villeneuve, but it seems like he was trying to make a Lynch or Bergman movie, but fell short. By no means do I hate the movie, numerically I would rate it a 6 or 7/10, but I feel like there isn't much to discuss. You can break down the surface level (which has been done already) but once you understand the focus of the movie, there isn't much more to it.

    To add more, I'd say it's a good thing and very intentional that most things about loki are mysterious. We mainly know he's great at his job. Most characters show moral ambiguity. Joys parents do when they involve themselves in what kellers doing then let him continue it. While he obviously won't go as far as Keller, he isn't above threatening criminal's or suspects to get what he wants. Or hurting/roughing them up. The priest does as while he's a registered sex offender, he'll kill a child killer

    Got to disagree with you on Keller kidnapping Alex was for nothing or pointless, if he hadn’t then Loki wouldn’t have gone over to Holly Jones home and discover she and the stiff in the priests cellar are the perps and wouldn’t have saved Anna. So basically Keller makes the ultimate sacrifice for Anna in kidnapping Alex, it got her rescued. Also Loki, among being a fascinating character, always seems to show up right after Keller prays to God, this I don’t think is to imply he’s an actual god, but rather being used by God to answer Keller Dover’s prayers.

    I don't get why critics have to make the silly comparison between Loki and Keller other than the fact that they are two main players of the movie, looking for the daughter.
    You can't expect Keller to act "broadminded" when it is his daughter who is taken, and praise Loki for being "broadminded" when he is not as emotionally involved. Keller's obsession with Alex is logical, all things said and done, considering what Alex said in the parking lot. It was almost like a taunt. And if you delve deeper into Alex' psychology, you can see he was trained not to say much of his "aunt's" doings. He knew she had taken the girls, and yet he didn't say anything, choosing to give Keller breadcrumbs instead of the whole truth. Why not tell the whole truth and save yourself the beating? Say "My aunt Holly took your daughter."
    And "He will spend the rest of his life behind bars" ... LOL ... what are you smoking?
    Aggravated assault and kidnapping, considering all the other circumstances, isn't going to give Keller life imprisonment. I think 5-12 years is a reasonable sentence.
    What makes you so sure anyway?

    He says that he was at a catholic boy’s home for six years which is the biggest insight we have into his past.
    Also it’s really subtle, but Keller says to Loki before Alex is released, “whatever little rule you have to break has to be worth the lives of two little girls right?” Or something to that effect.

    Incredible analysis!

  • @RW-ij1ci
    @RW-ij1ci 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would the father really have gotten life in prison? Would be kidnaping, false imprisonment and torture... but he knew he had something to do with it.... and thinking about the film, had he not taken the specific steps he took, his daughter would have never been found, because Loki would have never known to look at the property, thus he would have never visited the house to find the girl. So the father was 100% responsible for finding his daughter, although slightly indirectly, even though he figured it out at the end.

    • @cHeStEr5434

      I doubt he'd get life. I think if he faced jailtime, he'd receive a reduced sentence giving the circumstances.

    There's no need to call your speculation that Loki had a troubled childhood a theory. When he is interrogating the Priest after discovering the body in his basement, Loki says, "I spent six years in the Huntington Boys’ Home, father, now you know the Huntington Boys' Home, huh? Hurting a fuck like you would be a real treat for me..."
    Combining that threat with the fact that Loki was visiting the Priest because he was on a sex offender list strongly suggests that Loki was abused as a child for a long period of time at this Boys' home.

    Loki had a bad past. It’s not a theory. He said at the priests house he knew first hand what he did to boys at the orphanage i.e. he grew up without a family and was sexually assaulted as a child. It’s not a theory he had a troubled past he 1,000% did

    I kinda disagree , the father is fighter , a self made man , a guy who doesn't expect the the problems to be solved by themselves , he feels an unimaginable pain for his daughter , he blames himself , and his wife and another son blames him too .
    And the challenged guy is giving him evidences that he knows , that he toke his daughter so he knows where the child is , and he sees how everybody isn't doing anything about it and as a father, as a man he feels the need to do something , to save his daughter, the challenged guy is the only clue that he has and he will do anything for his daughter.
    The cop can't push the guy anymore because the law , and because he can't find him anymore, so he goes to check the pederasts and he is lucky , one has the knowledge of wath to do , where to look and the power of the law behind him , but without it he will just do what the father do .
    I admire both of them and I admire the father because he has balls to do what he is doing knowing that he will pay for that but he is willing to sacrifice himself for his daughter, his only mistake was at the end , wen he goes to the house and doesn't grab that bitch by the pussy as soon as he seen her.

      I think due to constant pressure that he puts on himself because of the nature of his job and his personality. I believe he did solve every case that he was put on because when bob kills himself and he was sitting in his officer's room and gazing at that maze drawing then his officer said 'Alright boy u didn't get this one' meaning he successfully solved every previous case.
