    The excessive blinking Loki does is also heavily associated with OCD and trauma, especially people who suffered trauma in childhood. It’s a kind of tick, a way to relieve anxiety and stress in a situation where such an expression of emotion would be inappropriate and/or a tick that manifest if the person struggles overall with experiencing and expressing negative emotions.

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      My friend Dante Rivera blinks like that. If you ever saw The Ultimate Fighter he was on that in season 7. He lost to Matt Riddle on the Finale show. He runs a jujitsu academy now, but when I was younger he taught me how to hit a speed bag and stuff. I always thought he just had eye problems, but you’re saying that’s usually a tick?

    • @andrewburgemeister6684
      @andrewburgemeister6684 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only picked up on my third viewing.
      Basically the “crackhouse” as the Birch’s eldest daughter calls it was a site of tragic significance for Keller long before he used it as a site to ruthlessly torture and hurt Alex, a place of violence and pain for Keller. The look of abandonment and walls broken and rubbish scattered everywhere adds to the dark and sad nature of that place.
      Also sort of sad and ironic in keeping with the title of “Prisoners” in that his Dad was a guard at the prison which Keller most certainly ended up in for what he did to Alex (presuming he was found before he bled out at the end).

  • @cianfarrell8483
    @cianfarrell8483 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    You said Alex doesn’t give Keller anything but the reason he goes to Alex’s aunt in the first place is because Alex whispers to him there in the maze. So Keller’s torture of Alex although cruel and not right was actually the reason his daughter was found. Aswell when he is found he will only serve a max of 10 years for his crimes. So in my opinion this is worth it.

    • @davidlean1060
      @davidlean1060 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There is certainly a theme of 'god works in mysterious ways' in the film. Keller has the dream about his daughter showing him the whistle. That could be seen as some sort of divine intervention. Another example is Loki catching a glimpse of the emergency ward just as he is about to pass out at the wheel. Yet another example is Loki receiving a phone call about a lead just as he is about to have Keller show him around Keller's Dad's old house (possibly finding Alex in doing so). I think it's the Rastafarians who say, 'Jah will provide'. The universe, god...whatever way you like to think of it, will provide the things you need just when you need them. That idea is certainly present in the film.

    @blondeonion9020 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great analysis. Thank you.
    I thought one of the most significant clues to Loki's delinquent (criminal?) past was in his appearance. It struck me as quite a deliberate costume choice to make his character appear is if he were in a prison yard; the movie stereotype prisoner with buttoned-up blue shirt, slicked-back hair, tattoos, woolly hat and even the matchstick between his teeth in a lot of the scenes. Loki is the only character that is prisoner throughout the entire film. A prisoner either of his own conscience for carrying around the meaningless (to him) praise of having always solved the case - which of course, does not necessarily mean that he has ever saved a child's life, only that he has brought the perpetrators to justice - or of the system he has to work within. Only in the final brilliant scene do we see that he may finally be able to reconcile (in every meaning of the word), which is the other main theme of the film.

  • @davidlean1060
    @davidlean1060 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The simplest way to interpret Loki's masonic ring is to think of it as symbolising his attachment to reasoned thinking. It sets up the differences between himself and Keller (his most obvious symbol being the cross). Funnily though, I don't see Loki as a member of any club! He is a classic movie misfit in many ways, I think that is why we relate to him so much.

    The ending... they purposely show us that Keller is a very resourceful survivor. He has a flashlight and is scavenging immediately after shut in the pit. We see sneakers sitting beside the whistle of his daughter's he finds. Loki is told flat out that the whistle is still missing and was found and lost again during their kidnapping. The sneakers mean Keller will quickly make a tourny for his leg wound. Loki was back on the scene the very next night and I find it odd that nobody would find his TRUCK still on Holly's property but Loki clearly hears the whistle at the end. EARLIER in the film when Loki first goes to see Holly, he is snooping around the pit/Trans Am when she comes out to stop him. (The girls ARE down there at this time, Holly even tells us this). Loki will hear the whistling and remember that pit and how Holly tried to stop him. He will also rescue Keller because he thinks Keller IS a "good man" at least in his own mind and never would've killed Alex.

    Rewatching this again after all these years after rewatching the film. There’s so much in this film that it’s a bit difficult to really articulate in a comment, but this film is fantastic as is this analysis. The performances are fantastic, especially by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal who gave Academy Award worthy performances, story is executed so well and it makes you think what would you do if your kids were missing. This is a film that I watch every so often and I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out and truly enjoying it. I can’t decide if I like this or Sicario better. Darren, very well done. Just saw this movie for the first time a few days ago. Villeneuve has a golden touch. I've loved everything he's done so far. Can't wait for Blade Runner. One thing I noticed that I thought you would point out was when Keller is praying but he couldn't finish the prayer. The part of the prayer that he couldn't finish was the part that talks about asking God to forgive us as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. He's conflicted with saying that part cause he doesn't feel a shred of forgiveness toward his daughter's kidnapper and, in turn, fears that God will not forgive him for what he is doing. Great analysis video. I'm going to subscribe.

    Great analysis, you inspire me, thanks.
    I wonder what's your take on this-
    The scene when Loki arrives at the aunt's house. Editing makes it appear to me that she was aware that Loki was coming. Loki knocks on the door and she would have been able to hear it. (She's always prepared for these moments, like when Keller came and she was ready with her gun). Also Loki was able to hear her opening the girl's room.
    Do you think that she realized her run has taken its course at that point, or that she decided tace it head on by killing the girl and potentially killing Loki too?

    • @_MUSTSEEFILMS_
      @_MUSTSEEFILMS_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah thats what it seemed like to me, that she felt like it was over, and didn't want the police to win, so she'd kill the girl in order to have the final victory. But then Loki works his magic!

    Darren, wicked stuff man.
    How long does this film analysis process take? Watching the film, trying to notice symbolism in it, etc? Also, any tips for someone who wants to start studying these things?

    • @_MUSTSEEFILMS_
      @_MUSTSEEFILMS_  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Sudiyono some of my videos are shorter and can take a few days but the film analysis video take my a month or more, usually it involves watching the film a few times and taking notes on what i notice and my initial feeling towards the film, figuring out the message at the core of the films and what i believe its about and then digging into whatever else i can find on the film from external sources like interviews, blogs etc. Then ill draft a script and work out exactly how to structure and present the information, then ill record my audio from the script. Once i have the audio ill edit all the visuals to it. The editing and music etc is the film sprint finish and may take like a week for a video of this length but the research and prep part is 90% of the real work.
      As for how to start studying, i started with alot of film theory books, i have an old video here which goes through a bunch of books i used in the beginning, hope this is useful!

    My favorite part of the movie is when Keller is saying the Lord’s Prayer next to Alex and he can’t say the next line “as we forgive those who trespassed against us” this is when he realizes what he has done is wrong but he’s in too deep so he just keeps going for his daughter.

    I don’t care what anyone says I don’t think Alex is totally innocent Ik in his head he wasn’t intending to abduct them but he was strong to overpower an old woman it shows he’s capable when he try’s to escape his captivity so I know for a fact he could have done something’s since he was a victim himself I know Keller isn’t innocent necessarily but I do believe he husky totally in the wrong for beating the shit out of Alex

    • @_MUSTSEEFILMS_
      @_MUSTSEEFILMS_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the lines of right and wrong get totally blurred in this film, but for Keller Im sympathetic and understanding because the drivelling force to save his daughter is so raw and strong, I can imagine other people doing the same.

    The theme of the Bible is love. Love is found in peace. Peace is found with being still, living in and living the present- no matter what situation it presents. In being present, in being at peace in the present one is absent of hate, resentment and judgement. “Forgive those who trespass against us”
    Forgiveness is apologizing for resenting.‘psychologically judgment and resentment is literally living by your perception and expectations. When someone trespasses against you- it’s nothing new; it is not the world aiming directly at you. It’s something that is happening. You did not create yourself nor the world so the act of judgement is literally pretending to be- or playing as- God. If he were still and patient the result would have been the s same and he wouldn’t have tortured someone. Everything Keller did was for not and he became imprisoned. You become who you hate when you live in your ego. Learn pain and let the ego die by accepting powerlessness. But he took things in his own hand, replaced his daughter in her prison and never saw her rescued. Keller- not the bad guy- could be seen as the antagonist.

    Whaaa🤨 🚨
    How does Keller know where to go after he talks to the little girl in the hospital? It makes no sense... is it just a long shot? He seems so confident when he confronts the aunt tho... I see this as a major plot hole unfortunately.
    Great movie otherwise...

    • @_MUSTSEEFILMS_
      @_MUSTSEEFILMS_  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It never bothered me really, it seemed like Keller was targeting the boy a lot and was close to that house more than anywhere else and has suspicions about the place and knowing that the two girls were together he put it together that his daughter was still left but in that same place where he'd been. Seemed to click at the time.

    • @ule2300
      @ule2300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s just too far fetched mate. The location could have been anywhere. Fair enough if he would go and investigate further, but he straight up threatens the aunt when he walks in... or he could at least talk to the police, so him charging out the hospital wouldn’t lead the investigation to the tortured Alex... Also the way the girl is crying while she says he was there... it kinda makes it seem like Keller took part in the abduction... and when was he there? what is the girl referring too?’ When he was there talking about ‘dreaming a maze’ ?
