@ FolkSeattle: Many thanks for your upload. The American-Canadian documentary on ZZ TOP ('That little ol' band from Texas') brought me here. There, on one occasion, Billy Gibbons talks about their performance at the end of a blues festival (as a still relatively unknown band )and that one Furry Lewis encouraged them to carry on playing although it was way after midnight. This is yet another proof, that there are still so many good blues artists to be discovered. Mr. Furry Lewis is one of them. So, thanks again.
Just came across furry a couple weeks ago. Me being a bb king fan that's all I knew as far as blues goes. But furry he's that kind of blues player that has a voice that puts you in the foot stompNr mood. His guitar skills are so simple put can make any man cry.what a talent
Joe Johnson thanks 4 letting me know about Mississippi John & Lonnie. That's the kind of blues and pickN style I love it really brings a stur to my soul.thanks a bunch
What a great and wonderful bluesman. Never got to meet him. But damm could he play and sing. I rather listen to this then the junk they play nowadays, people forgot were the true music came from. Shame on them.
I knew him in Memphis too. I’m from about 65 miles south of there. He used to play at Peanuts and other midtown bars. He was a lovable gentleman. You can bet he had a half pint of Early Times in his coat pocket. 😹
@ Kenny Young: Yep! I believe you are on the money. It looks like it is an Epiphone Texan. I have an Epiphone AJ 220 in sunburst. Looks similar to the one Furrys' playin here. I love them ol' Jumbos! You get such a good vibe out of em'. This video here is awesome cuz you can pick up some good guitar phrasings, and get a feel for drone harmonization. The tuning sounds like it's in D, G, B, G, B, D. Furry's Blues is a fun number to play. I really dig this guy's style.

Furry was living in Memphis in 1910, when he was 11 years old. He wasn't living in Memphis yet in 1900-1901. Does the banjo comment refer to a stepfather? Furry said he never met his father, and the 1900 census said his mother was a widow.

One man with a guitar . . . it doesn´t have to be any more complicated than that to be magnificent.
It was so dark I went to strike a match and had to strike another one to see if the first one was burnin. ha!
just made me laugh too
still smiling

Yes, a daft comment.
I've never heard of Furry Lewis until I heard the song *"Furry Sings the Blues",* by Joni Mitchell, and even then, I didn't know who the man was.
Brilhante trabalho, o que faz com maestria no estilo de que lhe é próprio. gostei demais. maneco - Porto Alegre-RS -Brasil.
so much of this was playing in my home growing up. the reason i play guitar today.
This is great stuff. "I'm Going to Brownsville". It makes you want to pick up a guitar and learn.
Never heard of him either, Dan. I listen to a lot of blues.
Thank you for this post, delicious pickin, real blues.
Probably ONE of the original rock and rollers.......
¡¿ QUE afinacion usa?¡ a los guitarreros!? Gracias saludos
Puts me back in Memphis at Peanuts Pub on Cleveland where he performed so many times...
The first first song has me thinking of Sufi poetry.
The good side of TH-cam 👍

I think this is a pre-gibson Epiphone Texaan. Furry is great on a broken Sears and Robuck
Aunt Caroline Dye sent me here.
zajebiście ze w ogole cos takiego jest na youtubie mozna obczaic starych zajebistych bluesmenów
gotta new way of spellin Memphis, Tennessee...
I saw him on burt and Jerry Reed movie,he's awesome
This man has a very similar voice to blind boy fuller
Blues God.
I don't prefer to compare the great bluesman. But I do disagree still.
What is that in the the top of the guitar?

Why would u make videos private..... what a low down dirty shame. You know i really enjoyed these videos, i watched em' everyday for fuck sakes...
Is it me, or is his guitar out of tune?
Jim1971a I think you're missing the point.
Jim1971a yes, it's out of tune. it's an open g tuning.
+Jim1971a < Any other way wouldn't sound right.
doesn't matter who the blues artist was. they don't sound right unless it's slightly out-of-tune
Lol ur outta tune
what's the second song?
going to Brownsville!
The melody is similar to Rollin' And Tumblin'.
